To think i'll be judged with a private numberplate?

I bought a used car recently, & the seller had a private plate on it which he didn't want to keep so it stayed on the car.
I don't really care about it & it doesn't appear to mean anything - it's just a standard 6 digit age-hiding plate.

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby? Do you judge?

YABU = yes

It will cost me about £80 or so to remove it & revert to the standard one I think.

Not seen as snobby, but really naff. Having said that, in your position I wouldn’t bother changing it.

Bagelsandbrie · 02/03/2021 17:53

Not snobby but tacky Grin but if it doesn’t actually spell out anything I probably wouldn’t really notice.

FluffyHippo · 02/03/2021 18:03

'Do you judge?' Absolutely. And the verdict is 'twat'.

TransplantedScouser · 02/03/2021 18:19

We have three

My car - abxx mno
His car - cbxx mno
His bike abby mno

My name doesn’t shorten to three letters but his does / same mno in all

My car and his car have the same numbers but different two letters is hike share the letters with his car hit different numbers

Don’t give a shiny shit what people think - suits us and the go gives a duck really?

LynetteScavo · 02/03/2021 18:26

They at a bit naff. I have one which DH night for me when he bought me a new car. I've since changed cars twice and it's been on retention for years. I've told DH he can sell it if he wants to, but it does spell my name very well.
I didn't realise the neighbour over the road had personalised plates on his cars, so I guess sometimes they're wasted on people like me.

DH also has one on retention, he doesn't use it at the moment.for several reasons.

Used to live near a woman with a flashy sports car proudly displaying a "WIFE C" number plate. Always made me think she was weird for being proud of her husband's previous relationship failures and it made me wonder if she started out as the other woman.

So although it's completely irrational I do judge people for having daft stuff spelled out on number plates because I always associate it with her. She was a vile bitch who would scratch my visitors cars for being parked within 3 car lengths of her property. Mad as a box of frogs that one.

CyberdyneSystems · 02/03/2021 18:27

I had one about 15-18 years ago. I let it go after about five years when I sold the car

I now think they look tacky, the worst are the ones where they've been mis spaced and letters messed with

I'd keep it OP, £80 is a lot of money

WineInTheWillows · 02/03/2021 18:33

@FluffyHippo

'Do you judge?' Absolutely. And the verdict is 'twat'.
Why? Why do you care whether someone has chosen their own plate rather than simply sticking with the manufacturer-assigned one?
bettertimesarecomingnow · 02/03/2021 18:34

We have private plates on all our cars and vans and I quite like them.

Some private regs cost ££££ tho and I really don't see the point in spending tens of thousands on a plate. It's only to disguise the age of the car or spell out your name etc. It's novelty more than anything I think.

cyclingmad · 02/03/2021 18:35

No judgement here, I know someone whose number plate was cloned and had to basically get a new one and advise is a private number plate is better.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2021 18:35

Do you think I will get judged for having a car with a private plate? Seen as snobby?

Only by twats.

GraduallyWatermelon · 02/03/2021 18:38

Always see one in the car park that reads P33 POT. Gives me a bit of a giggle so I've warmed up to them now

DicklessWonder · 02/03/2021 18:41

@SquatBetty

I wouldn't notice unless it spelt out a word - those word ones are the height of naffness
I drive a rare car whose value is on the up. My plate spells out something related to the car and adds an increasing amount to the car’s value. I’ve received several £10k+ offers just for the plate.
Okbussitout · 02/03/2021 18:41

I don't know how number plates work to show age so I wouldn't notice if it didn't spell out a word. I think people judge them as it just seems like a really pointless thing to spend money on. But I wouldn't be spending &
£80 to change it!

ApolloandDaphne · 02/03/2021 18:44

I have had a private plate on my car for 25 years. No one has ever mentioned it to me. They haven't even asked what the initials are for.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/03/2021 18:46

I don't like them as think they are a pointless waste of money but I wouldn't pay to change it. I would if I could sell it for a much higher sum though. I'd only judge someone if they said they'd paid £1500 for one then couldnt afford to feed their children for example

TechnoDino · 02/03/2021 18:46

Round here people have private plates to disguise the age of their SUVs. Anything over 2 or 3 years old is looked down on by many (not me, I couldn’t give a toss, and am probably pitied at the school gates). Worst ones are the plates spelling nicknames.

FinallyHere · 02/03/2021 18:47

Do you really care about being judged by random people for random reasons?

If so, why?

whoworksforfree · 02/03/2021 18:50

I had no idea people looked down on private plates so much

I have one, it was a surprise for my 30th birthday. Not something I’d ever have justifies buying myself (can’t see the value myself) but it’s nice to have something easy to remember especially when I change cars

Mine is just my dogs initial, year it was given to me, and my initials, along the lines of J15KCP

Well you obviously do care or else why bother.

The "don't care" option is just to have the number that comes with the car.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2021 18:54

Well you obviously do care or else why bother.

She doesn't care what the small minded idiots think. She likes her private plates so obviously cares about them.

DynamoKev · 02/03/2021 18:55

Arranging a plate as WIFE C is illegal. Not that anyone seems to care. So that person, in common with many others actually paid someone to make an illegal plate for her car.
DynamoKev · 02/03/2021 18:55

@SoupDragon

So she does care.
SoupDragon · 02/03/2021 18:58

So she does care.

She specifically said that she doesn't care what the small minded idiots think about the plates. So no, she doesn't care what people think.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2021 18:59

Not caring what other people think isn't the same as not wanting to have private plates.
