Bought a lovely Victorian flat with my partner however the previous occupant left this truly awful painting. Am I being unreasonable to just throw it away? Partner seems to think we could sell it! I just want it gone as it’s giving me nightmares just looking at it.

Not quite my cup of tea despite my Gothic credentials....

Have you tried reverse searching the image on Google to see if you can find its provenance? You never know it might be a valuable avant garde masterpiece.....

MissingTheMoonlight · 02/03/2021 01:05

@SprogletsMum Grin That made me chuckle!

AndIquote · 02/03/2021 01:19

Yesus it's like Hellraiser.

Genderwitched · 02/03/2021 01:28

You are right OP it's got a bad vibe. I'm sitting downstairs on my own and I'm a bit creeped out. I'm scared to move.

thosetalesofunexpected · 02/03/2021 01:36

@Rosebean92

You can either wait for charity shops to open up again, or to advertise on Gumtree website or free cycle to obviously give away for free

Or
To give it away free or sell it on Facebook or find it is there any other websites you can sell/give away stuff such as this.

Would students from a local college or elsewhere be interested into this kind of thing,on a college noticeboard advert.

Also local community newspaper is there any for sale adverts space in the back of this.
They could even do a story about this too.

rockinaftermidnite · 02/03/2021 01:40

Splash it with holy water. Then sell it on FB. If not sold after a few days, burn it!

Guiltypleasures001 · 02/03/2021 01:41

Can you take a pic if it and google image search
Like they do in Cat Fish Grin

shutterteal · 02/03/2021 01:48

Looks like a Francis Bacon, possibly someone's own interpretation. If it is a FB then you're rich!

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 02/03/2021 01:53

Someone will love that on their wall - not sure why - but id sell it

GreenSlide · 02/03/2021 02:03

That's the worst thing ever Shock

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/03/2021 02:39

Does it have a title? Rather than something sinister, I’m thinking Man Gives Birth

Reinventinganna · 02/03/2021 02:42

I like it. Do you have a guest room?

QwertyGurty · 02/03/2021 03:11

Jesus that's terrifying! Seeing that picture just sent shivers down my spine!

SheeshazAZ09 · 02/03/2021 04:15

Put it on freecycle with a photo. I have got rid of the most bizarre stuff on freecycle including a pile of stones I dug out of a garden bed. Chap said he wanted them to make a path.

Justanotherfaceinthecrowd · 02/03/2021 04:20

@NameChangedForThisFeb21

Actually can I buy it?

There’s someone who really deserves it as a present...

Grin second refusal to me!
HeronLanyon · 02/03/2021 04:56

I can imagine it selling.
I would get it appraised first just in case.
Given lockdown opening up of auction houses etc may be too long to wait if you can’t do it online.
Too long because I would want that out of my house pdq.
Insomnia here and that image has not helped !

strangestranger · 02/03/2021 05:07

Give it to the folks on Bargain Hunt. They buy any old shit

NeedCoffeeToSurvive · 02/03/2021 05:31

Soon as I looked at it a bag fell off my bedside table Confused now my partner is off to work and I'm tempted to wake up my toddler just so I'm not by myself downstairs.

I wouldn't burn it, you'll probably release whatever demon lives inside, it gives me Dorian Gray vibes, just put it outside with a note saying free to take.

rawlikesushi · 02/03/2021 06:06

Do you know for certain that the previous owners are alive and well somewhere?

Eviebeans · 02/03/2021 06:11

It looks like the type of art created in therapy in psychiatric hospital

Tinkerbell456 · 02/03/2021 06:20

It’s pretty surrealist a la Picasso, and therefore creepy and disturbing. The things days would be numbered if it was in my home.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 02/03/2021 06:40

Stick it on ebay, people love that kind of thing. Bloody awful though it would give me nightmares.

CathedralsInCornwall · 02/03/2021 06:47

get it valued!!!!!!!

It may be 'something'.

nancywhitehead · 02/03/2021 06:47

It's possibly an A Level/ art student's piece as it looks inspired by some weird mix of Francis Bacon and Gilbert & George. Objectively speaking, it's not a bad painting. The art is decent. You could get rid of it by selling or giving it away. It will go a lot quicker if you advertise it as free to a good home.

But if it's freaking you out and you don't want it in your house, just throw it away. It won't be incredibly valuable.

burritofan · 02/03/2021 06:50

Burning it will only anger it. It belongs to you now, OP.

Or rather, you belong to it.
