AIBU to think that women should be able to request same-sex provision?

The tweet below is astonishing for two reasons. First of all, as the poster points out, this is the NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL saying that one's sex is 'assigned' at birth. They said this out loud! As part of their evidence to the GRA enquiry!

But aside from that nonsense, what stood out for me was the number of nurses, midwives and nursing associates whose 'gender identity' does not match their sex. 4,484! That seems like a high number, does it not? I wonder how many of that number are fully intact males?

You might remember when Clare Dimyon requested a same-sex nurse to attend her during her mammogram, the NHS responded in the most extraordinary way--they took her name off the letter and published it in official literature as an example of a 'bigoted' request.

One thing for which we should be grateful to Eddie Izzard: Now we are under no doubt that in many cases 'trans' means, simply, 'crossdresser'. Are these 'trans' nurses, midwives and nursing assistants crossdressers? Are women within their rights to request that crossdressing men not be present during intimate exams and so on? If a woman makes this request, will she be committing a hate crime?

Here's the Clare Dimyon story

YANBU at all. I’m very pregnant and will be requesting female only care.

HermioneWeasley · 03/02/2021 20:01

It’s horrifying that HCPs in female specialisms aren’t advocating for women.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 03/02/2021 20:02

YADNBU. If midwives think gender is assigned at birth we're in an appalling mess. I've got loads to do atm so haven't time to say anything detailed but I'm horrified.

AStudyinPink · 03/02/2021 20:03

I wouldn’t mind a male midwife, so it wouldn’t bother me, but women ABSOLUTELY have the right to request a same-sex care provider during birth.

Lemmeout · 03/02/2021 20:06

I thought trauma informed practice placed importance on intimate medical attention being carried out by females to avoid re trauma.

Langrycleg · 03/02/2021 20:08

In extremis we trust that male medics etc are working for the patient, but we have been proved wrong at times. We are not there for validation purposes, so women born women should absolutely have the right to ask for intimate procedures especially to be done by another female born woman. Why some people can’t accept this is astonishing

Langrycleg · 03/02/2021 20:10

Please would the poster who thinks this is unreasonable state their reasons.

GaraMedouar · 03/02/2021 20:11

Could it be where 4,484 nurses have said their gender does not match their sex is because they are not prepared to tick a ridiculous box. ie if I had to tick a box I’d either tick ‘yes’ as I’m female, or I might tick no because to be honest I don’t think I have a female gender, I’m just female, a woman - adult human female , I don’t believe in gender stuff - so maybe it’s nurses thinking it’s all rubbish and that’s how they’re expressing it possibly? (Hopefully)?

And that’s why it should be based on same sex provision. The XX type of sex. I’d always request a female , and walk out if they thought it could be a penis owner.

SingingLoud · 03/02/2021 20:13

the number of nurses, midwives and nursing associates whose 'gender identity' does not match their sex. 4,484!

I wonder if 'non-binary' was an option and that accounts for the high number? I wonder if women are now choosing 'none' for gender where it's not possible to cross the word 'gender' out and replace it with sex.

peak2021 · 03/02/2021 20:13

YANBU indeed same sex provision for any intimate medical care. I'd argue that a man should be able to ask for a man for a prostate exam as well.

SingingLoud · 03/02/2021 20:14

x post with GaraMedouar.

Well yes of course. A man should absolutely be able to request a man carry out whatever procedure they need.

Yes this. Or not ticking the box as they feel it is irrelevant or don't want to disclose
2020iscancelled · 03/02/2021 20:15

Shocking isn’t it.

I love Eddie Izard for his recent comments. He has been a voice in trans and cross dressing space for longer than some of the woke brigade have been alive. (I am “woke” myself in some ways so I use this tongue in cheek).

But it’s very true.

I don’t necessarily have an issue with men in midwifery, there are many male consultants after all - my first was delivered by a woman consultant, assisted by a man. I wasn’t concerned.

But we have every right to demand safe space for ourselves at the most vulnerable parts of our lives.

Bluetonic41 · 03/02/2021 20:15

@Sexnotgender what happens if you need medical intervention and thee is only male medics avaliable?

radicalnotion · 03/02/2021 20:16

Terrifying.
@Sexnotgender what happens if you need medical intervention and thee is only male medics avaliable?
If there’s an emergency and it’s critical I’ll of course accept whatever help is necessary but for standard care my requirements are for female only care.

Thewithesarehere · 03/02/2021 20:17

This is quite ridiculous and makes one wonder what has happened to the science of life that is called biology Hmm

Norwester · 03/02/2021 20:20

A male obstetrician saved my life and dc1's. I am glad he was there! A male nurse was on hand as well - also very happy to have him on the team.

Langrycleg · 03/02/2021 20:21

@2020iscancelled what did Eddie Izzard say that was good?

That's not the point though. No one is saying male nurses aren't up to the job. It's about choice for a women in a vulnerable situation.

That isn't what the OP stated. She stated that "this is the NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL saying that one's sex is 'assigned' at birth." Sex, not gender.
