Who would even know 400 people willing to break LD law?

Just saw it on the news.
Any of you could muster 400 people to break the law?
I could maybe get 20 out of everyone I've ever known, how do you even ask?
It was a school to boot! No teaching but come to school for a secret bash!

So...
YANBU no I couldn't gather a big group of rule breakers.
YABU I could easily get that many, everyone is at it.

I've just read it OP. How do they know there were 400? Most of them got away. Absolutely disgraceful though isn't it!

Me neither. I'd imagine it's cultural to have such large weddings. I've attended the odd Indian wedding, and the number of people who turn up! We are talking 1k plus.

A lot of them will be underage and brought by their parents.

If it's a religious school, the community might be quite tight? All families know each other from school and synagogue and value the ceremony in the same way?

(it goes without saying that they're twats, obviously)

That's about the number of people I'd have liked to invite to my wedding, if there'd been a big enough venue nearby! But there's no way I know that many who'd break lockdown (and I wouldn't either).

But if there'd been a lockdown when I'd been at school or university, I reckon I could have found that many people willing to come.

I'm not sure I even know 400 people … but out of my network I can't think of anyone who'd be prepared to do this.

I hope that every single person who attended is tracked down, fined, named & shamed. Absolutely disgusting behaviour.

I can picture asking my friends/ acquaintance and the answer would just be No, lockdown. not springing Granny from the nursing home.

400 guests at a wedding.
As a starting point... Family size. If you invite all your cousins, second cousins etc, It could quickly add up.
Religious community... Again, if you are religious, your religious 'family' could be massive.
In some circles it's normal to invite business partners etc of the parents. As well as their friends
Then you get onto the friends of the bride and groom. Who may have children themselves.

So I can easily see how 400 people can attend a wedding.
As for lockdown... Well some people think the law doesn't apply to them. Or it's a special case. Or they won't get caught.

Well no, but I'm not a member of a community with a very strong focus on community life and prioritising religious obligations over all else, I imagine if I was then this would not seem so strange to me.

One thing I don't get is how people in communities that celebrate this way find the time.

A work colleague had a 500 person wedding yet she could only invite ten friends, the majority of the guest list being all of her parents generation and above. She said that it would cause massive offence not to invite them. But surely since those people all have families of their own they must just constantly be attending weddings?

I think it was a Jewish orthodox wedding? If so numbers like that wouldn't be unusual, they would have the whole community.

Yes @thecatsthecats when do you get to say no?! How do you decide what wedding to go to if you have a clash and you’re the business friend/colleague of the family but not b/g?! It’s bizarre to me

Of course. But if you are part of a community which regards the obligations placed on you by god as superseding all earthly authority, a community which is fairly closed and many members of which live almost entirely apart from the mainstream, accessing no secular news or media, spending time only with other members of the community, living a life centred around religion...

Not unusual in normal times but I do find it surprising that so many would feel it OK to ignore the most basic of social distancing rules

I just heard it mentioned on the news which didn't say anything about what type of wedding it was I sincerely hope that all the adults will be given fines. There is literally no valid reason to attend. The B and G should both get the maximum fine imo and the venue, someone must have let them in.

Well it appears they knew enough to cover up the windows or is that a usual practice at Jewish weddings?
