Who would even know 400 people willing to break LD law?

Just saw it on the news.
Any of you could muster 400 people to break the law?
I could maybe get 20 out of everyone I've ever known, how do you even ask?
It was a school to boot! No teaching but come to school for a secret bash!

So...
YANBU no I couldn't gather a big group of rule breakers.
YABU I could easily get that many, everyone is at it.

Total madness. No-one I know would break lock down rules.

Lots of folk are putting weddings off to the future.

400 people. Good Lord. Hope they get big fines. There were students in Derby (house party) who got fine 10 thousand. Not that you can fine enough for people having spread Covid. They have other people's lives on their conscience.

Do they not understand you can get/pass on Covid whether you are a believer or not?!

Thesearmsofmine · 22/01/2021 12:38

Absolutely selfish actions by them and I do think these kinds of restriction breaking should have more serious consequences than a fine.

Doomsdayiscoming · 22/01/2021 12:40

I thought this govt had done nothing right this whole pandemic, then someone says that this school carpark is also a covid test site?

Finally logic has prevailed.

“If you suffer symptoms after the wedding please return to the wedding site for your free complimentary covid test. If you test positive you will be entitled to £500.”

lalafafa · 22/01/2021 12:42

Bloody idiots. The Jewish community in Stamford Hill have been hit disproportionately by Covid too, no wonder.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/01/2021 12:42

I used to live nearby. Judging by the size of the families I would see in around, in the parks and playgrounds etc, it would only take a couple of extended families to reach 400.

Whereas mine and DH's extended families don't even number 20.

BurtonHouse · 22/01/2021 12:44

My visceral, emotional reaction would be to take their names and make sure they were denied hospital treatment if they got ill.
But that would be immoral and totally unacceptable: a bit like their actions on other words.

Brighterthansunflowers · 22/01/2021 12:45

I haven’t seen either of my parents in over a year but they can get 400 of them in a school hall?! Fuck that, every single person who went and who supplied services to it should face significant fines. Nobody is above the law, religious or otherwise. Absolute selfish bastards the lot of them.

To answer your question, I don’t know 400 people, would never want 400 people at my (nonexistent) wedding, would never break lockdown and couldn’t find 400 people to join me if I did.

Ah phew. I hadn’t thought of that. Glad to see they are following the rules they choose to follow.[/quote]
The famous 11 th commandment, the one that says you can do what you want babes, it’s your life innit, followed to the letter.Grin

thebabessavedme · 22/01/2021 12:47

Very badly judged given the rise in anti-semitism we are seeing at the moment - I think the Rabbi needs to be seen to apologise, we have seen Imans trying very hard to work with government to persuade people to accecpt vaccination and follow the rules within religious practices so its not impossible for orthodox jews to do the same.

unmarkedbythat · 22/01/2021 12:49

No way Unmarked I'm not buying it, surely even Amish are fully appraised of the virus.
A big rule of most religion is obey the law of the land you live in.

The Amish are probably even less cut off from mainstream than many members of the Charedi communities. Totally not unusual for members to speak only Yiddish/ Hebrew, never have read a secular newspaper or watched a secular TV programme or listened to a secular radio show.

Charedim are interesting! They are so far from caring about "obey the law of the land you live in"- the Israeli government experiences ongoing difficulties re this.

barofsoap · 22/01/2021 12:50

It's Stamford Hill - I lived there for four years, yes they could easily get 400 people to a wedding. Large families, everyone turns up. They are all probably in the same bubble

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 22/01/2021 12:51

I could muster 400 for some law-breaking but not for a wedding

unmarkedbythat · 22/01/2021 12:51

I dont understand why you would have such a big party when you wont be married in the eyes of the law

This depends on whether you regard secular law or god's law as mattering more.

Ch3rish · 22/01/2021 12:52

@lalafafa

Bloody idiots. The Jewish community in Stamford Hill have been hit disproportionately by Covid too, no wonder.
If that's true I hope they are ashamed of the strain they are putting on the NHS through their selfishness.
Xenia · 22/01/2021 12:53

I am against the mandatory covid 19 rules although I do follow them. It is a matter of religious freedom to allow weddings. My child has a wedding on 13 March which will go ahead come what may we hope for religious reasons with 13 guests and no party but currently and since 19 December in London probably the longest time since the 1500s just about all weddings have been banned except in cases such as you are dying even if you have a religious reason to marry.

I hope the orthodox jews can combine with Catholics and others to lobby to allow tiny weddings again.

MsHedgehog · 22/01/2021 12:55

The Hasidic community do have their own rules and customs, and, as others have said, even their own ambulance service, and so forth. I don't know how they view marriage (i.e. is Jewish law enough, or does it need to be legal as well), but it is worth noting that Jewish weddings in the UK are legally binding.

CoronaIsWatching · 22/01/2021 12:56

I best not say what I'm really thinking because I will probably get banned...

murbblurb · 22/01/2021 12:57

they know the rules - the 'rank and file' may be barred from newspapers/internet etc but the community leaders will know, hence the covered windows.

The Charedis are an extreme Jewish sect - certainly no contraception so the women just birth and birth, hence the large families. (I know someone who married into this lot, she had 11 kids). Like other extremist religious groups, they ignore all science and sense. It is an abusive cult and extremely difficult to escape.

sadly this will only fuel more antisemitism, not that it needs fuelling.

as for religious freedom - complain to your god who is presumably in charge of all this, and so must want you to risk death or serious illness for your ceremony.

MsHedgehog · 22/01/2021 13:00

@Xenia

Weddings were banned for a lot longer during the first lockdown

ancientgran · 22/01/2021 13:01

@Xenia what are the religious reasons for marrying at a certain time? I'm Catholic and don't know any for us, we'd just wait.

PicaK · 22/01/2021 13:08

Just pondering that if you don't have Internet, TV, newspapers etc and are completely cut off then the wedding being cut short by the police must be quite threatening. I feel for the misled esp the bride
The report noted the school has rented for sdimilar use and being disingenuous in their response.
What a stupid tragedy if people get ill from it

RedToothBrush · 22/01/2021 13:09

From what I've seen suggested they are a very Ultra Orthodox Jewish Group who may not have much exposure to the media. They are akin to being a british jewish version of amish christians.

Adam Wagner (@adamwagner1) has been saying they may also have been targeted by actively deliberate disinformation suggesting that certain life events were legally permissable.

Apparently there were leaflets being distributed in the local area to that effect and he had been trying to tackle the issue to no avail

His thread here.

So I think this case is a bit more complex than simply being selfish or pure ignorance and in some respects perhaps more sinister.

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 22/01/2021 13:09

According to the BBC the headmaster of this school died last April from COVID. Talk about a kick in the guts for him family.

I’ll call up my Jedi pals and see if we can join forces with you. We tend to have small weddings normally, as a lot of us have light sabre training on Saturdays.

Individual families may be cut off from the media, but they will be very aware of rules and restrictions as local authorities, etc. would have worked with the community leaders. The Rabbi would have certainly have known and should have refused to carry out the wedding.

The leaflet you refer to was prepared by a Rabbi, so not sure what you mean by it being sinister?
