Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

As a guest I'll take a cold house every time. There's only so much you can strip off and it's horrendous siting trying to make conversation while sweating and worrying about the damp patches slowly spreading out from your armpits!
In a cold house you can layer up, move more and drink lots of tea.

AlwaysLatte · 06/12/2020 09:52

We used to visit my husbands uncle, a good 4 hour drive away, with a small baby and he had it unbearably hot. What with the lack of sleep, because baby, we were always nodding off while we were sitting there! Much prefer it cold. I throw open all our windows every day to air the house for 30 mins in the morning while I'm showering etc even if it's snowing too (although my husband complains!)

Macncheeseballs · 06/12/2020 09:53

Hot is better, because at least you can cool off at your convenience and you're not a guest of a tight arse

PerdidathePostwoman · 06/12/2020 09:54

Cold houses are the worst

userxx · 06/12/2020 09:54

I'd say hot houses are worst.

DappledThings · 06/12/2020 09:56

Cold is better. You can always put on more layers. Much harder to cool down than to warm up.

But it all depends on your general resting temp. People who always feel the cold will always prefer to feel warmer and find it easier to cool down and vice versa

whattodo2019 · 06/12/2020 09:58

Hot house with open windows for fresh air Wink

SquirrelFan · 06/12/2020 09:58

I feel the cold, but I much prefer (if I have no control) a cold house to a hot one. Ime, hot houses are usually stuffy as well, and I can't bear that!

NoPainNoTartine · 06/12/2020 09:59

I hate being cold, my central heating is on 24/7 to keep a constant and pleasant temperature.

However, being somewhere too hot gives me horrible headaches.

As long as I am not expected to take off of my shoes and freeze, I vote for "too cold". I find it easier to manage.

TheLightGetsIn · 06/12/2020 10:03

If we're talking serious extremes, then a house that's too cold every time. But I would want to be forewarned so that I can bring all my woollen layers, thick bedsocks, a hot water bottle and possibly a thermos!

If you're in a ridiculously hot house than there's less you can do about it, and it makes me feel ill after a while.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/12/2020 10:06

Cold is better. You can add a layer of clothes. But hot? There is only so much you can take off before it becomes unacceptable 😁

That said, I like cold.

randomsabreuse · 06/12/2020 10:13

Hot is easier because you can always layer up with thermals under clothes but decency dictates minimum acceptable clothing levels...

knittingaddict · 06/12/2020 10:17

Boiling hot is far worse. At least if it's cold you can put on a warm layer. Modern builds, particularly apartments, are far too highly insulated and it's becoming a big issue in our hotter summers. My daughter's was like a sauna in lockdown, so she moved to Victorian terrace and it's so much better.

june2007 · 06/12/2020 10:20

If cold you can put on an exra layer, snuggle ina blanket, wear wolly socks. Too hot is uncomfortable and wasteful.

wonkylegs · 06/12/2020 10:27

My dads is always cold but with hindsight it's probably similar to the temperature of our house growing up, houses have definitely got warmer.
I'm a cold person, I also have raynauds however I much prefer it to my mums stuffy hot new build in both summer and winter.
We have one of those smart heating systems so we can set the temperature of each room separately so some rooms are warmer and others are cooler.

Scolha · 06/12/2020 11:33

Hot houses are so much worse.
Perfect breeding ground for all the microbes/bugs you do not want, I can’t breathe when it’s too stuffy and hot, you need some airflow!

RumJerrySailorRum · 06/12/2020 11:40

I feel the cold, I'm always bloody freezing, but I'd much prefer a cold house over a too hot house.

RedskyAtnight · 06/12/2020 11:44

Hot houses are worst. You might be able to cool down your own room if staying overnight, but it's generally impossible to cool down communal rooms (lounge, kitchen) where you spend most of your time without causing offence (if the host has the house hot, chances are they don't want all the windows open to cool it down). Plus I have eczema and overhot houses wreak havoc with my skin.

Much easier to warm yourself up if cold - extra layers or walking about, or having a hot drink.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/12/2020 11:44

Hot is worse and if I opened the windows to regulate the heat I would feel like an ecocriminal.

WinterStrawbsAreLikeTurnip · 06/12/2020 11:49

By Mumsnet standards my house is a fridge so always a colder house. I keep it around 17 during the day. It's not cold it dressed reasonably.

Grenlei · 06/12/2020 11:52

I love being warm and can basically never be too warm. My house is always cold even if I turn the heating up to max, so I am used to walking round in layers, scarves etc. I love going to people's houses that are warm. I don't think I've ever been to one that was too warm for me!

Grenlei · 06/12/2020 11:55

My heating is currently on 20. I have 3 layers on, plus thick socks, I don't feel particularly warn and my hands are still freezing. I have considered wearing gloves but it feels a bit Dickensian!

DreamingofaShiteChristmas · 06/12/2020 11:55

@Macncheeseballs

Hot is better, because at least you can cool off at your convenience and you're not a guest of a tight arse
Or a guest of somebody who gives a shit about the environment?
HavelockVetinari · 06/12/2020 12:00

I'd take a cold house every time, I'm always overheating. PIL keep their house at 23°C all day and all night, it's awful and makes me feel slightly sick Sad

WhatAreWordsWorth · 06/12/2020 12:00

I like a cold house over a hot one, our house is on the cooler side anyway. Being too hot makes me feel ill.

Having said that, my ex’s dad was the tightest man on the planet and his house was the coldest house I’ve ever been in. Boxing Day at his house one year was grim, I’ve never forgotten it.
