Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

I like cold houses. I feel like I’m suffocating if it is warmer than 18’. My DH feels the cold so we do have to compromise, but living in a very old house means I win 9 times out of 10 just because the house is naturally cold.

Even now, I sleep with just a sheet over me. I kick the duvet (summer weight) off, so DH has double layers over him.

Bumblebee1980a · 06/12/2020 21:32

A hot house definitely. Years ago I went to my parents holiday home in North Yorkshire and couldn't work the heater. I couldn't even get undressed and get ready for bed as it was just far too cold 🥶.

I don't like a hot house nowadays either but I've found that more so now as I've gotten older.

Have we forgotten the summer? 30 degrees , headache inducing

No I think back to it fondly. I loved the summer and I love heat waves Grin

Ditto. I'd have permanent summer if I had my way. Autumn and winter makes me miserable and depressed.

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 06/12/2020 21:56

I'm basically a massive PITA because I have a medical condition that makes me completely overheat all year round when moving all year round (shopping, cleaning, walking, cooking etc - in deepest darkest snowing January I was followed around a shop by a security guard who thought I was a shop lifter as I was bright red, wearing only a hoody rather than a coat and sweating profusely.) I have to stand in the garden on occasions after cooking food before I can eat it during the winter and I have steam flying off my entire body I'm literally that hot.

Conversely, when I am sat down and haven't moved around my circulation is so poor (thanks to another health condition - thanks heart!(!!) ) that I am frozen to the touch even when others are warm in the room. My fingers/toes are white and even my boobs are ice cold and aching - tmi, sorry!) Even in June if I've been sat for a while I can be cold to touch.

The overheating is always the worst - I can't escape from it. There's only so much you can take off and keep decent when people are around, fans blow hot air, you can't sleep, sticky and grumpy.

Too cold and I can put layers on, use a heated blanket, get into bed, put slippers on, use handwarmers, wrap up, snuggle up to the dog, put the heating on, get moving around, make hot drinks etc etc.

You can always solve too cold. Too hot you can't escape from.

turkeyboots · 06/12/2020 22:01

I can solve too hot easier than too cold in someone else's house. DH will always remember staying in a relatives house and getting up in the night to put on our clothes over pyjamas, and sneaking to the hall to get our coats to put on top of the quilt.
Must easier to turn off a radiator and open a window at MiLs boiling house.

vintageyoda · 06/12/2020 22:07

Hot is way worse than cold.

jerometheturnipking · 06/12/2020 22:10

Cold. I like the cold. It’s easier to put on more layers, get a hot water bottle or hot drink than it is to take off clothes.

Crystal87 · 06/12/2020 22:10

Boiling hot especially when smoky.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/12/2020 22:12

Despite being a relatively "cold" person I prefer a colder house. I can't stand feeling hot & sweaty, and in a cooler house I can just dress more warmly, have a hot drink etc.

Honeyroar · 06/12/2020 22:14

I’d take a cold house any day. Yes you can open a window, but then you get nouse, and it doesn’t always cool it down enough. Our house is freezing but is always put a hot water bottle in for guests and a thick throw, so they’d stay warm. Sometimes I even put two duvets on the beds.

Oooohbehave · 06/12/2020 22:15

Hot is so much better. I hate the cold and I don’t want to sit there in several layers indoors.

Im hanging for the first real heatwave of aussie summer 45 deg for days on end, balmy warm nights HEAVEN
PrincessNutNuts · 06/12/2020 22:30

Overheated houses are the worst.

I'd take no heating and a blanket over my knees over stuffy and hot and nobody ever opens all the windows. Add a plug on air freshener and I might actually puke.

ILikeStrongTea · 06/12/2020 22:35

As a child I got chilblains, the radiators in our bedrooms weren’t allowed above a certain temperature. Showers were a warm dribble of water. I used to wash my hands to warm them up.

Being cold is miserable and it’s impossible to warm up. I refuse to visit my parents house in winter (they don’t live near so this isn’t difficult) because it’s just so cold. Even DH knows it’s cold and he doesn’t feel the cold like I do.

My house is warm, I refuse to be cold or let my children be cold.

VetOnCall · 06/12/2020 22:38

Too cold is definitely worse, I can't bear being cold in the house. Having to sit huddled under blankets, wearing gloves and hats indoors, layered up like the Michelin Man, it's miserable.

mountainofdreams · 06/12/2020 22:40

I would prefer a cold house. Hot houses make me feel unwell quite quickly.

400rabbits · 06/12/2020 22:41

God for me too hot is always best. But I grew up in the 80s in a house with no central heating and single glazed windows which would have ice on the inside in the morning in winter. I hate feeling cold at home!

MrsKoala · 06/12/2020 22:41

Pils house was always freezing. In the north and unheated apart from the living room. My glass of water used to freeze next to my bed. We never showered when visiting because they never had any hot water. It was very quick half clothed washes in the sink and dry shampoo for 5 days.

But I still prefer that to the roasting we get at my parents. There is only one room I can sleep in as it’s the coolest and I have all the windows open and still wake multiple times as my throat is sore and I’m gasping for water. It doesn’t help that they have the radio blaring constantly so everyone has to shout to be heard. It’s all open plan downstairs so the tv will be on at one end, radio at the other, the dog will be barking and jumping up, everyone is shouting over each other, red faced. Arguments and bickering are constant because everyone is so irritable. They moan my house is too cold. Grin we are going there this Christmas and are already planning strategies to take it in turns to stand in the garden.

Katjolo · 06/12/2020 22:44

A cold house is hell

brunoc12 · 06/12/2020 22:47

I'd prefer a cold house. I suffer bad headaches so a house too hot would give be an awful one.

Lowhangingfruit · 06/12/2020 22:54

Never had central heating growing up. Anyone else scraped the ice and frost if their windows? I've still got all the windows open in my room, no heating on so far. Saves on bills as well. I might relent if it snows. But too cold is miserable. Warm about 17* is nice. Think I've got splinters Grin

AndcalloffChristmas · 06/12/2020 22:59

In general I run quite cold, but I prefer a cold house to a ridiculously hot one. You can always put jumpers on etc. I know what you mean about it getting into your bones, but a hot house can be suffocating too.

In bed in a cold house you can have a lovely warm duvet and a hot water bottle, and maybe a hot bath beforehand.

The cold I really can’t stand is air con! That’s what I find really gets into my bones.

Lemononachair · 07/12/2020 00:19

Ahh @squeekums, @sanityisamyth and @SmileyClare, I remember those beautiful hot summer days - I'd have a cold shower and feel lovely & refreshed, put my hair up and throw open all the windows & doors to let the breeze in. Then I'd turn on the fan, have an iced drink and stroll around in a pretty little sun dress or just my pants if I was really hot. Heavenly 😍

Much better than what I'm doing right now, shivering under a thick duvet in as many layers as I can comfortably sleep in, constantly wiping my streaming nose with hands that are ice cold. And that's WITH the heater on! Winter is bullshit 😡
