Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

I hate a cold house. I grew up in one and spent my childhood being cold.

DottyWott · 06/12/2020 14:05

I hate over hot centrally heated houses (my parents for example!) and they always turn the heat up at mine when they visit. However, I’m not one of those who hates summer because it’s too hot, I love a heatwave! It’s something about the close, stuffiness of central heating.

ContadoraExplorer · 06/12/2020 14:13

I prefer houses on the cooler side. Hot ones become stifling and dry out your nose. Cold ones, not ideal either but at least you can breathe and you can warm up with layers and hot drinks. When we're allowed to stay at the PIL's, the first thing we do is turn the radiator off in the bedroom and open the window or we struggle to sleep well at night.

grassisjeweled · 06/12/2020 14:16

Boiling hot is worst.

SIL keeps her house at 25 degrees overnight : I feel horrendous when I've woken up, like I've been drinking, even though I haven't. Fucking awful

itsovernowthen · 06/12/2020 14:32

I really dislike cold houses, no matter how many layers I put on, I can never get warm.

Hot houses make me feel warm and toasty, give me that any day of the week. If it starts getting unbearably hit, I'd go outside for a few minutes or open a window briefly for some fresh air.

Grenlei · 06/12/2020 14:42

My childhood home only had central heating downstairs (although when I was a teenager we did get a radiator put in the upstairs bathroom). It was always warm downstairs, and as it was a small house and open plan, some of the heat travelled. It did stay relatively cold upstairs though, but did mean you never woke up with headaches from being too warm overnight.

My DP kindly turns the heating at his house up to mid 20s for me (he'd happily keep it at 18/19) and occasionally if we forget to turn it down before bed we wake up feeling awful. Don't need to worry about that in my house as even with the heating on max it never gets warm enough Grin

Ghostlyglow · 06/12/2020 14:42

I live in a cold house. It's miserable sometimes since I've been WFH. As someone else said, it seeps into your bones.

itssquidstella · 06/12/2020 14:46

YANBU. I really feel the cold and it takes me ages to warm up once I get cold. I'd far rather be too warm and will happily sit around in my underwear enjoying the heat! DH is the opposite is we play an ongoing game of thermostat wars (I win) 😆

ToffeePennie · 06/12/2020 14:50

Cold houses are horrible. There’s nothing worse than sitting shivering because the only layer you have left is your coat and it’s rude to put it on

PickAChew · 06/12/2020 14:52

I don't hate being cold nearly as much as I hate being hot.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 06/12/2020 14:54

HOT

In a cold house I can wear thermals & a jumper. Have a hot drink etc.

Too hot makes me feel sick.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/12/2020 14:56

Hot is better. Nothing worse than the cold feeling in your bones.

I don't visit one friends house anymore as I got sick of dressing up like the Michelin man to pop in for a cuppa.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/12/2020 14:58

I also fall asleep if I'm too cold. That doesn't go down well 😂

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/12/2020 15:03

I can't bear cold houses, I work in the community and spend a lot of time going in and out of peoples homes.

I always associate cold houses with tight people!!

My heating is on around 22 most of the time and if I had guests I'd be mortified if they felt cold.

Janegrey333 · 06/12/2020 15:04

Overheated houses are so uncomfortable. There is no escape. Ugh

CountFosco · 06/12/2020 15:05

If we're talking about visiting in the winter and the warmth being due to the central heating then I'd probably choose hot. Happily wander round DM's house in a tshirt and shorts whereas if a house is properly too cold then that's dreadful. I'm not talking about 'put on a jumper and slippers and watch TV under a blanket' cool (which is probably what our own house is), more like 'can't warm up in flannelette pyjamas and bedsocks under the duvet' too cold.

squeekums · 06/12/2020 15:42

hot house or as id call it, comfortable

the cold is my kryptonite, i buckle when im cold, cant handle it, whine like a baby

Rosebel · 06/12/2020 15:46

Also I hate my house being cold as can't dry my washing off. I didn't have central heating growing up (got it when I was 12), we had night storage heaters and the evenings were so cold. Perhaps it's affected me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/12/2020 15:46

Hmmmmm

I have worked in both. Very hot houses and very cold

I really not sure

Hate being cold and can layer

But in a very hot house it’s unbearable and sweat and feel faint

InTheLongGrass · 06/12/2020 15:50

Possibly the extreme of too hot, but walking back into our house after a holiday, the AC had broken, and the house was at the ambient temperature of 46C. It was awful.
Watching football at 4 C today was much more pleasant than last year at 44C. So id say too cold is better.

treet1me · 06/12/2020 15:51

My mil keeps their house absolutely boiling. Makes me feel sweaty and like I need a shower all the time.

Especially awful since we now have a toddler to wrangle in the oppressive, dry heat.

Hell on Earth.

PattyPan · 06/12/2020 15:51

Too hot is definitely worse. If you’re cold you can always put a jumper on or have a cup of tea but there’s a limit to how much you can take off if you’re too hot and the heat gives me a headache. Plus people being in a room naturally warms it up.

Nc135 · 06/12/2020 15:52

I hate cold houses. I just cannot do anything.

Suzi888 · 06/12/2020 15:52

I’d rather too hot.

PattyPan · 06/12/2020 15:54

I generally keep my house at 17 but turn it up to 20 when we have guests. I’d rather people think I was tight than not care about the environment!
