Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

Cold house, every time.

Being cold is just annoying.

Being hot makes me feel physically ill.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 06/12/2020 15:57

Would rather be too warm as a guest. I hate visiting one friends house as they won’t have the heating on as there’s nothing pleasant about sitting there freezing cold. Luckily not had to face it this year as not allowed to visit.

Passthecake30 · 06/12/2020 15:58

I can’t stand hot houses. The in-laws keep their house so hot, with a roaring fire and no window open. I just want to sleep. Kids take their summer clothes and strip off but I feel like I can’t quite do the same. There’s a huge duvet on the bed (15tog?) that gets thrown on the floor.

Sweettea1 · 06/12/2020 15:59

My house is always cold not by choice heating is on full most days it just doesn't get warm plan on getting the insulation checked once I can anyway I'd rather a hot house.

sanityisamyth · 06/12/2020 16:02

Cold is miserable. I can't afford to run the heating for long and I don't like having to layer up like the Michelin man inside to save money.

sanityisamyth · 06/12/2020 16:05

I also fall asleep when I get cold which isn't conducive to getting lots of work done!

Every morning there is also considerable condensation on the inside of the double glazing and mould growing on the seals.

Cold is not good.

SmileyClare · 06/12/2020 16:15

cold is not good I agree and anyone that's lived in a truly cold, unheated or poorly heated house would agree!

I'm wondering if some people on here who prefer "cold" homes mean the thermostat is set at 18 degrees or something rather than that awful cold damp feeling of an unheated draughty house.

evilharpy · 06/12/2020 16:41

I can't cope with being cold at all. My inlaws keep their house at about 17deg and even with multiple layers my hands are always like blocks of ice and I feel like it's got into my bones. I'd much rather have too hot.

roarfeckingroarr · 06/12/2020 16:43

YABU

I spend time at my father's house wearing a t shirt and shorts when I visit. Being too hot makes me grumpy, tired, sometimes nauseous... I tend to go to my rooms there and open all the windows just to feel I can breathe.

livingthegoodlife · 06/12/2020 16:48

I prefer hot house. In law's house is always freezing. You can see your breath indoors. The baby wears a pram suit / snow suit indoors. I wear a million layers and am always cold. I never warm up. There is no bath. The shower is like a drip and not worth stripping off for. I do a lot of washing up to try and warm my hands.

Generally I just try and avoid staying over night. Day visits only. Sad really but I just can't bear it.

jumperweather · 06/12/2020 17:34

HOT! I hate HATE HATE being cold. Even if I layer up it takes me forever (hours) to warm up. And I just can't sleep if I'm cold either.

Luckily for me my DH loves being warm too so our house is always warm.

😃

SmileyClare · 06/12/2020 17:38

livingthegoodlife Are your in laws struggling to afford their bills? Surely no one chooses to live like that Sad I feel quite sorry for them!

I can't help thinking the posters that feel sick and ill when the heating's up to 20 are the same ones who are on all the I Hate Summer threads that pop up at the first glance of warm sun. Grin

Give me a hot house or a heatwave any day.

zukiecat · 06/12/2020 20:35

Having lived in an absolutely freezing cold house for years because I couldn't afford to put the heating on, I now love my new cosy house. Never want to go back to that cold again, layers and layers of clothes, gloves indoors, spending most days in bed because at least it was warmer. Hands and faces blue and frozen all the time, the house being colder than it was outside. No hot water either, had an electric shower, but getting dried in such freezing temperatures was no fun at all.

Now DD and me have been rehoused by the council, and have had lots of help from them, and mental health support workers. Our new home is smaller, in much better condition and we love it.

Finally got disability benefits sorted out too, so it's been a fresh start all round.

windysocks · 06/12/2020 20:44

hot! Those who complain about "too hot" have never lived without heat. I grew up in a house with no heating in the 80's. Sleeping in coats, hats and scarves, hot water bottles, ice on the inside of the window- awful. I live in a lovely warm home now- DH likes to moan about heating bills but i want to feel warm ! I still take a hot water bottle to bed though!

Roo1000 · 06/12/2020 20:48

Cold. Definitely cold.

MangoBiscuit · 06/12/2020 20:51

Mu current house has no central heating. It's the 3rd house I've moved into without. One of those I was stuck in, and unable to fix. Sleeping in 2 layers of clothes, a sleeping bag, AND a duvet over the top. I will still take a too cold house over a too hot any day. I can layer up, or ask for layer / a hot drink if it's too cold. My Ex ILs used to live in sub tropical temperatures in their UK house. I got daggers for standing in the garden in a t-shirt to cool down!

Cold I can add stuff aqnd make it work. Heat, there's a limit I can cope with.

SmileyClare · 06/12/2020 20:55

I'm with windysocks I still remember the feeling as a child of having to get undressed and into a not very warm bath in an unheated house. It was like actual pain that cold to the bone feeling and your body was always tensed up because you were shivering.
I'd much rather feel a bit too hot.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/12/2020 20:56

I won't visit cold houses. Just won't do it. Can't bear being cold.

LindaEllen · 06/12/2020 20:57

I absolutely can't stand being cold, so I'd pick the hot house over anything else.

Lemononachair · 06/12/2020 21:12

I absolutely despise being cold, PP are right it's physically painful and gets right into your bones! It's all very well good to say you can drink lots of hot drinks (I can't or I'll be peeing every 5 minutes), wear lots of layers (unless I cover up every inch of exposed skin the exposed bits are still cold!) and move more (am I supposed to do star jumps while I'm trying to relax and watch tv in the evening?!) but there's a limit to what is possible or comfortable.

I currently live in a house with no central heating and I'm having to use 2 little fan heaters to warm the place up. Last night my electric tripped so I was without any heating at all until late into the night. I was in bed with my 15tog duvet, fluffy covers, fluffy pjs, dressing gown, 2 pairs of socks and a coat. I was still so cold I couldn't sleep until the electric came back on and I could put the heater back on. Even then it took about 3hrs to warm up enough to be able to sleep. It fucking sucks.

I feel gross at the moment because it's so cold I can't bear to get wet in the shower and then get out into a freezing cold room. The fact that I have potentially 4 more months of this is slightly soul destroying tbh.

In the summer my place is the opposite and is boiling hot, as in dripping with sweat hot. It's a million % better than being cold!!

Hot house every single time 😍

Hopeisnotastrategy · 06/12/2020 21:14

Neither is pleasant, but cold is easier to manage,

SmileyClare · 06/12/2020 21:17

Been there Lemon you have my sympathies. I've been in a similar predicament and resorted to wearing a hot water bottle stuffed up my multiple jumpers at all times.

I mean how hot are we talking for these hot houses? 22, 23 degrees maybe? Not tropical jungle conditions Grin

sofiaaaaaa · 06/12/2020 21:23

You’re having a laugh. Unless your home has air conditioning (seldom seen in England!), there’s no escape from a boiling hot house! I mean have we forgotten summer already? Over 30 degrees during the day which can be headache inducing if you can’t get cool, then spending the night sweating whilst trying to sleep even if you’re naked/no covers/had a cold shower etc. Opening the window doesn’t help, you just end up with a bunch of flies.

At least if it’s freezing you have more options to do something about it, you have more control and can get your temperature to a comfortable level.

HikerBiker · 06/12/2020 21:27

My parents’ house gets so cold it’s really uncomfortable to get out of bed, change clothes, or go to the loo, or shower. It’s hard to avoid your feet going numb and staying numb, even with thick socks and shoes. You have to be really careful to conserve heat especially at night, don’t open up a crack in the duvet or it’s game over. Horrible!

megletthesecond · 06/12/2020 21:29

Sofia for cold blooded people like me the summer wasn't a problem. 🐍
I always think I'm like Garfield. I'd sit on one of those hot air vents if I had one.
