Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

I’m peri-menopausal and generally too warm a lot of the time (and that’s not even the hot flushes) so I’d go for the cold house. Think I would just expire in a hot house, not to mention how sleepy really hot houses make you. 😴🥱

Hot is worse. You can add layers etc to warm up. I hate it when hotel rooms are roasting hot too, particularly bad if they are ground floor and not safe to have the window open.

My daughter was sat near a drafty window and now she's feeling cold should I be worried

As a short term guest (meal, night in or cuppa) I would prefer to be cold do I don't fall asleep but longer term give me too hot. That's as someone who actually likes cold.weather and being cool. A cold house long term is miserable, bath, waking up and bedtimes are miserable and it stops you wanting to do things other than keep warm.

A cold house is awful, really miserable.

I lived in my previous house for 16 years, and for at least 10 of those years I had no heating or hot water at all. It was a dreadful, miserable, difficult time. When the temperature in winter is warmer outside than your house.

With a lot of help and support from the council and mental Heath charities DD2 and me moved to a smaller house, and we're managing things so much better now. I never want to be as frozen and cold again.

I'm going to be one of those people and say both! I just can't take extreme temperatures and I've been in both. It's a no from me to both.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 13/04/2021 17:14

Hot is definitely the worst. I get a really bad headache in over-heated houses. At least if it's cold you can wrap up in a blanket, use a hot water bottle or wear layers.

Whereas if it's hot, there are only so many layers you can take off before you're stuck.

Hate hot houses. So it would have to be cold houses if I had to choose

FindingMeno · 13/04/2021 17:18

Hot fuggy houses gives the females in our household migraines. I can't stand overheated houses!

Lanique · 13/04/2021 17:18

Zombie thread.

But FWIW, hot houses are worse. I've stayed in places where it's too hot to sleep and it's unbearable. I quite like it a bit cold because I live snuggling up under duvet and blankets. Also I think my body goes into semi-hibernation mode in the cold, so I sleep better!
