Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

@Macncheeseballs

Hot is better, because at least you can cool off at your convenience and you're not a guest of a tight arse
How do you cool off when you are sat in the living room of a too hot house for several hours? only so many clothes you can take off. Presumably the host likes it that temperature so opening the windows would not be appreciated.
CakeRequired · 06/12/2020 12:21

Cold houses are the worst. I hate being cold though.

StuntCroissant · 06/12/2020 12:26

Cold is the worst. It's so un-welcoming and inconsiderate as you can hardly sit there in your coat.

I once stayed at a friends house unexpectedly (tyre blew and it was late at night) and I still remember having to jog on the spot to warm up before I got in bed (wearing 3 layers).

DrFoxtrot · 06/12/2020 12:27

Cold houses are the worst. Once I've got too cold, I feel really flu like and achey until I can get properly warmed up in a hot bath or something.

I once went on a date and the person's house was 13 degrees Shock. I'm not sure how it was even possible for a house to be that cold.

It's no fun wearing a coat indoors as a guest if you've no other layers to put on, surely that must make the host feel uncomfortable?!

BecomeStronger · 06/12/2020 12:31

Cold, everytime. Cold office too please. Way too many people moan about been cold and have the heating far too high when wearing really insubstantial clothing.

I do always take sheepskin slippers when I go to my parents' but that's much more acceptable easy to manage than wanting to walk around in my underwear!

SmileyClare · 06/12/2020 12:31

It depends what posters are classing "cold" as. Growing up we could rarely afford to heat our house. It was awful in the winter, some days just impossible to feel warm, waking up with ice inside the bedroom windows, painful feet and hands. It's miserable to have to put on loads of clothes and use blankets to keep warm.

I love hot homes. The hotter the better Smile

I consider 20 too hot and will only put it to this if it’s really cold outside otherwise between 16 - 18 which I find just right, daughter doesn’t agree.

AgeLikeWine · 06/12/2020 12:39

If I’m a guest, cold is better. I can put on extra layers if I’m too cold, but I can’t strip down to my underwear if I’m too hot.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 06/12/2020 12:41

I've said hot is the worst, but mainly because I hate the associated stuffiness. That's what I really dislike.

cakewench · 06/12/2020 12:49

I'd rather it be too hot. If it's really too hot, I can pop outside for a minute to cool off, but if I'm too cold it takes absolutely ages to warm up.

FWIW our house is kept at about 18 so anything above 20 is warm to me! But we do put it warmer when people are visiting.

rhowton · 06/12/2020 12:50

I would always choose to be too hot than too cold.

Redcrayons · 06/12/2020 12:50

I’ve said cold, but depends on what type of cold. No central heating at all in January then no way. The heating on for an hour before bed, wouldn’t mind that.

I don’t mind too hot if I can open the windows.

Northeastmum93 · 06/12/2020 12:54

Before I had children and still lived at home my best friend had her own house, she didn’t earn a great wage and her boyfriend was shit with money. They never had the heating on it was always freezing, she’d once put clothes on the radiator and when the heat kicked in there was steam coming off them. I always wore a jumper and a huddy when I went round, I don’t know how she coped with it. Sometimes it was warmer to go outside for a cig.

LostAcre · 06/12/2020 12:59

It depends how cold we’re talking - we went away for a bit once in January, forgot to leave the heating on, and when we got home it was 10 C inside. That really was too cold.

But generally, I prefer houses to be on the cooler side. I like the thermostat set at around 16 - 17 C.

Unfortunately DH is the opposite and will adjust the thermostat to anywhere between 20 C - 25 C. Way too hot for my liking.

Ilovesugar · 06/12/2020 13:03

Depends....too hot in the winter as it’s easy to cool down / open bedroom window and the temp is then at a good intermediate.

Too cold is better in the autumn and spring as you will normally have packed extra layers

TheGoogleMum · 06/12/2020 13:11

It depends on the time of year. Cold is better in summer, hot is better in winter :)

Plonque · 06/12/2020 13:14

I would much rather be cold than hot, like PPs said - it's much easier to warm up than to cool down.

GreekOddess · 06/12/2020 13:16

Cold houses are the worst you can't get cosy in a cold house and I can't wait to leave.

Hot offices are the worst. When I'm at work I like to work in temperatures that other people consider freezing.

Rosebel · 06/12/2020 13:30

I hate being cold and our house is freezing. So cold you can see your breath. It's an old house with virtually no insulation.
I love going to my parents house because it's hot but my husband hates it and always opens all the bedroom windows (!!!)
At least in a hot house you can go outside and wear less layers

GlowingOrb · 06/12/2020 13:36

Hot is the worst. You can’t exactly strip naked in the middle of dinner. You really can’t just start opening a Hosts windows. Heat can mean sweating and it’s awful to have your clothing damp with sweat during a visit to someone’s home.

If people are cold, layering up is an option.

megletthesecond · 06/12/2020 13:40

Cold is worse.

I can't get warm in layers if I'm sitting still. I need hot air around me.

MustardMitt · 06/12/2020 13:43

It depends on why it’s that hot or cold.

If it’s hot because of the weather so opening a window won’t help, then I’d rather be cold. Put layers on, do some exercise, use a hot water bottle. Being too hot makes me sick and I get migraines. If it’s hot because of heating (visiting elderly relatives!) then it’s ok I can open a window or step outside for some air.

YakkityYakYakYak · 06/12/2020 13:56

PILs keep their house insanely hot. We lived with them for a bit and I had a permanent headache. They keep the heating at 28 constantly and don’t even turn it off at night. It’s unbearable.
My parents are the opposite and rarely put their heating on. When they came to visit us at PILs house they couldn’t deal with it and had to go and stand in the garden 😂

bumblingbovine49 · 06/12/2020 13:57

Definitely prefer too hot as long as I can open the window in my room

rooarsome · 06/12/2020 13:58

I'm a district nurse- give me a cold house any day. Too many times I've been crouched over bilateral leaking legs in front of a blazing hot fire in the middle of summer.
