Which is worse: boiling hot houses or freezing cold houses?

Inspired by the 'horrible experiences of being a guest' thread!

Obviously we all want houses we visit to be kept at our personal Goldilocks tempetature, but given the choice between staying in a house that felt way too hot or one that felt way too cold I'd go for hot every time.

If it's hot you can open windows in your room, sleep practically naked, or invent a task like emptying the bin to temporarily cool yourself down a bit. But a far too cold house just gets into your bones and it's impossible to warm yourself up once you're freezing, especially as when you're a guest you aren't moving about much.

YANBU : Too hot houses are the lesser of two evils
YABU: Too cold houses are the better of the two horrible options

I spend those hot days sipping cold drinks, trying to move as little as possible and generally feeling sick and dizzy.

Skyshale · 07/12/2020 01:28

A boiling hot house would definitely be worse IMO.

At least if your house is cold you can wrap up warm. There is nothing more insufferable than a stifling hot house - our house is a new build; it's basically a sauna in the summer months. Give me a cold house any day!

FloraButterCookie · 07/12/2020 02:34

Cold is better! Easier to warm up than cool down. On holidays I always put the a/c on til it’s quite chilly

Bobbi73 · 07/12/2020 02:51

My MIL's house is always boiling hot and I feel like I can't breathe when I'm there. In contrast, my mum's house is really cold everywhere except the living room where there's a fire. My mum genuinely doesn't feel the cold.
Out of the two, I'll take the cold house every time as it's easier to get warm by adding layers than it is to cool down.
I like my house warm but I think it's fine to wear a jumper in the winter.

Bloodybridget · 07/12/2020 06:34

I hate being cold indoors, and in someone else's house it's more likely you'll be sitting around, whereas at home you can warm up with some energetic housework. I need it to be quite warm if I'm stationary, doesn't matter how many layers I'm wearing (and wrapping yourself up in rugs looks a bit rude if you're a guest!).
Being too hot is unpleasant but doesn't make me miserable.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 07/12/2020 06:37

Much prefer cold if visiting someone, id rather wrap up in layers than be sitting sweating, i feel ill when i overheat so would be trying to be sociable whilst wanting to be sick.

At home i prefer the house to be about 20 degrees and warm enough not to need cardigans/jumpers

MrsKoala · 07/12/2020 11:25

You can’t really compare artificial central heating heat to summer weather heat. They feel completely different to me. I love the hot weather here and travelling in countries where it’s really hot, but the feeling of an overheated house is much more uncomfortable and makes me feel sick - same as car heat.

Also I dress for the weather, so warm clothes in the winter. The I go to someone’s house and they are sitting in shorts and t-shirts in January and I’m roasting in thermals and a polo neck.

formerbabe · 07/12/2020 11:28

My sil house is so hot..heating blaring, radiators so hot you can barely touch them...it's unbearable. I feel nauseous from it. Just awful...I'd rather be chilly

nokidshere · 07/12/2020 12:37

I prefer cold because I'm always hot. Unfortunately the rest of my family prefer hot. So we spend the winter turning the heating up and down depending on who is in the house. I turn it off when I'm alone and on when they are home. But if it's on then I have a window open slightly and a fan on.

user1471538283 · 07/12/2020 15:49

I'm a "cold body" and I hate being cold because its miserable. I would much rather be too hot

YukoandHiro · 07/12/2020 15:51

Cannot stand being cold as a guest in someone's house. Once it gets into your bones there's nothing you can do to warm yourself up. I've one friend in particular whose house I always leave with numb toes in winter. How her children cope I've no idea!

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 07/12/2020 16:07

Wow almost exactly a 50:50 split!

TheRogueApostrophe · 07/12/2020 16:14

We have a really cold and impossible to hear house. I wish it were warmer. However I'd always prefer to be in a too cold house over s too hot house. I can't sleep when it's hot. At least when it's cold I can get snuggled in bed.

Ponoka7 · 07/12/2020 16:20

I used to think that being cold was worse and used to get frustrated by my DH needing to stand outside, sit by windows etc. Now I'm post menopause, I can't stand being too hot. I've stopped staying in Premier Inns because you can't turn the heating off, not even in the hubs.

Makeup doesn't stay on, pre mask days. I'd rather be a bit too cold, but not painfully cold, though.

WandererLost · 07/12/2020 16:20

I used to live in a cold house with poor isolation, the boiler was incredibly tempermental and often didn't work. It was utterly miserable in winter. I remember once coming in from a walk in the snow and no matter how many layers I put on I just couldn't stop shivering. I also get severe headaches in the cold.

I live in a warm house now and love it. I love being cosy and not wincing at the cold sheets when I get into bed.

I don't have visitors to stay so I don't care what they might prefer Grin

AldiAisleofCrap · 07/12/2020 16:23

Don’t think it’s possible to have a house that is too hot.

altiara · 07/12/2020 16:29

My heating isn’t working. I’m wearing 3 layers, but my hands are so cold that I can barely type which impacts working.
In the evening I don’t clean up the kitchen as too cold, just can’t do anything apart from sit under a blanket.
True cold is not just adding an extra layer.
I would take a boiling hot house with pleasure!

Sloth66 · 07/12/2020 16:30

Cold all the way. But then I prefer autumn and winter to summer anyway.

I remember visiting a friend with DH and it was so cold we kept our coats on the entire time. I just sat and thought about how cold I felt rather than enjoying catching up.

I don’t want to sit under 15 blankets when I can just turn the heating on. Even if I am ‘snuggled’ under duvets the air is still cold. And what’s this obsession with hot chocolate and ‘snuggling’.

I like to be warm, I like to wander around my house and be warm.

Tumbleweed101 · 07/12/2020 16:38

Probably prefer hot to cold as at least you can sit in just a teeshirt or pop out for a quick walk, nip to car etc. But takes ages to warm up if get too cold. My MIL house used to be freezing and I really struggled staying there as you couldn't get warm after being outside.

cologne4711 · 07/12/2020 16:42

For me, it's somewhere that is too hot. If it's too cold you can put more clothes on, but if it's too hot there's not much you can do once you've opened the windows and stripped down to your underwear Grin

happymummy12345 · 07/12/2020 16:42

I'm one of those people who is nearly always cold, but I'd have to say I'd prefer a cold house to one that's too hot (if we were talking about it being very hot because of weather?) if it's cold I put the heating on and our house warms up quite quick, so it's not too bad. Whereas if it's too hot I hate it, even if all the windows and back door are open. It gives me bad headaches or migraines. It's easier to warm up I think

FourTeaFallOut · 07/12/2020 16:49

Freezing cold homes are worse, I can't abide being cold. Worse is when you visit a cold home with no prior warning and all you can do is cling to a cup of tea for comfort.

SecretWitch · 07/12/2020 16:54

I love a frozen house. Too hot and it leads to headaches, nausea and aggro.

I once ended up sleeping in my car when visiting a friend as her heating was so hot I couldn’t stand it. Her windows did not open either so I couldn’t get any relief there.
