Thanks for the new thread. How long might we have to wait for a concrete outcome? It's days, right?

Copperas · 05/11/2020 10:59

Thank you!

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/11/2020 11:00

Thank you!

Roussette · 05/11/2020 11:01

Thanks freddo... as I said on previous thread, is there any chance you could get MNHQ to add thread #109 to the thread title as old posters recognise?
Here's a link to the old one...

I've asked, sorry I forgot to add it - it must be lack of sleep for two nights for some reason.

It looks like AZ was called (by some news channels) too soon. Fox, I'm looking at you.

Joining new thread. Disgraceful behaviour from Trump supporters.

IamTomHanks · 05/11/2020 11:05

Disgraceful behaviour from Trump supporters.

You expected anything else?

PeterPanNeverLands · 05/11/2020 11:06

Place marking

PMK
I'm late to this particular party, hope you don't mind me gate crashing, it's an excellent thread.

Feedingthebirds1 · 05/11/2020 11:09

News outlets aren't helping.

According to the BBC the electoral college votes are Biden 243, Trump 214.

On Sky it's 253/214, and the Guardian has 264/214.

???

Roussette · 05/11/2020 11:11

Freddo I know about that lack of sleep feeling, I need a solid 8 hours to recover, but as I haven't slept a sold 8 hours for decades it's wishful thinking!

What in the name of all that is holy, is going on in Nevada? It's not a massive state, I think they took a day off yesterday?! The memes on Twitter about it are hilarious

freddosfrogs · 05/11/2020 11:12

I expect The Guardian are getting carried away with their excitement.

I watched a bit of Aliens last night, to relax from the election. Grin

Too tense. And I fear a last minute reversal of trends.

In any case, I hope Biden doesn't let go like Al Gore kind of did.

Apileofballyhoo · 05/11/2020 11:13

Thanks for the new thread.

TheWorstShed · 05/11/2020 11:13

@Feedingthebirds1

It is due to different 'decision desks' who call outcomes. This article explains further: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/nov/05/why-are-the-media-reporting-different-us-election-results

I might be wrong but it seems postal ballots are in such numbers this year that it has made the system less straightforward.

I have never spent so much time thinking about Arizona (or Nevada!)

TokyoSushi · 05/11/2020 11:14

Checking in! Thank you!

IamTomHanks · 05/11/2020 11:15

I might be wrong but it seems postal ballots are in such numbers this year that it has made the system less straightforward.

That's exactly why. And some states, like Pennsylvania, weren't allowed to count the mail in votes in advance, which is why it's taking them so long. There are millions of them.

Yohoheaveho · 05/11/2020 11:18

Hello🥰

anon444877 · 05/11/2020 11:18

Who thought that the first bush and the first gulf war would seem like halcyon days of presidential competence and decency? Or even the second Bush!

CaveMum · 05/11/2020 11:19

Thanks for the new thread. Making myself comfy here in the corner.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/11/2020 11:20

Thanks for the new thread, @freddosfrogs.

This is tedious now. But also terrifying. Trump is the personification of Evil, to me, in today's world. And I STILL can't get my head round the huge support there is for him, despite all the perfectly logical explanations on the last thread. It convinces me of what I had always suspected, people are inherently horrible, not naturally nice! Once they are allowed, by people like Trump or Farage, not to be PC, or woke, or whatever the current term for it is, they just let their inner nasty out all the way! Trump has actually got far, far, worse than he was when he was campaigning in 2016, but his behaviour is being lapped up. The new normal.
Sorry, had a bit of a rant. Best go do my taxes.

BruceAndNosh · 05/11/2020 11:24

So Trump supporters are outside election centres in Arizona yelling "count the votes" and outside ones in Pennsylvania yelling "stop the count" or even "stop the voting" (which makes no sense)

CaraDuneRedux · 05/11/2020 11:25

Someone asked on the last thread why mail in votes were predominantly for Biden. A mixture of things, but I think these are the likeliest.

  1. Democrats are more likely to take covid seriously; Republicans are more likely to be covid conspiracy theorists. So Democrats are more likely to want to avoid polling stations.
  1. Trump and his team started their disinformation campaign early, pushing myths to their supporters that votes were going to go astray in the mail due to some sort of shadowy conspiracy. Partly this was to whip up their voter base into getting out to vote, but partly because they've been preparing the ground for their "the election was fixed" claims months in advance.
  1. Some Democrats were worried about civil unrest on polling day.
  1. Some Democrats were worried, especially if black, about being disenfranchised on election Day by some official challenging their ID papers (this has happened in previous elections, even in states which do not have requirements for voter ID.)

Apologies if this has already been posted (possibly by me)!
