To think that Trump is not going to get re-elected?

There are still a few fringe types who think he’s going to get a landslide victory.

Personally I find this unlikely.

Any MNers from across the pond have a view more informed than myself?

He's not against Hills this time - a much harder candidate than the ineffective Biden - so who really knows

Biden has two great strengths a: he isn't Hillary Clinton and b: he isn't Trump.... both might be enough to see him over the line.

But perhaps the greatest issue for US politics is why both parties are putting up candidates who in their mid 70s.

raddledoldmisanthropist · 23/10/2020 21:11

I've got a small bet with a neighbour that he will lose but I don't think it's certain.

He'll lose the popular vote by a mile but it only needs a couple of swing states to disallow a chunk of postal votes and he might do it.

TitoTipples · 23/10/2020 21:12

As of today - 51 million people have voted so far... (I think the total anticipated voter turnout is 150 million-ish in total).

All the polls here show a Biden win - but after 2016 I'm not sure that counts for much.

The senate race is interesting - Lindsey Graham is in serious trouble (and it's a state that is likely to vote overall for Trump, but Graham is on track to lose - he's not exactly popular with anyone these days!)... and there are a few other key Republicans who are on track to lose their seats.

There's a poll tracking website that is interesting (and frightening addictive) - projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/ which tracks all the local, regional and national polls.

I live in a really blue state - every few years there's talk of seceding from the Union... if Trump wins I'm guessing these talks will ramp up again. Trump is very vocal about hating my state - but the feeling is fairly mutual.

Everyone I know is terrified of a Trump win.

Jouleigh · 23/10/2020 21:12

I'm frightened that he will win and Boris will take it as a get out of jail free card.

They are both useless in a crisis and just good time leaders.

It already feels like BJ is trying to emulate him with empty promises and backtracking when it's convenient.

Weird how being a rich, privileged arsehole cane make you popular with those who work hard or have nothing.

After BJ and Trump are done I would like to have it part of the process for leaders to give their income, outgoings and tax returns as given.

They have our data, only seems fair to have theirs to make an informed choice.

Even before Covid the right wing we're gaining due to immigration and playing on fears.

The UK are going to suffer so much due to Brexit during Covid.

I can't imagine another time this would happen.

ChaToilLeam · 23/10/2020 21:14

I hope he won’t. I do hope he won’t. But I don’t think it’s a done deal.

underneaththeash · 23/10/2020 21:14

My husband’s very sensible Floridian orthopaedic surgeon cousin voted for trump last time.
It beggars belief. The man is a liar, a misogynist, a tax cheat, arrogant and an incredibly poor president.

Parker231 · 23/10/2020 21:15

I don’t understand how he managed to get elected in 2016. I dread the idea of him winning next month - he’s getting worse. My DSil lives in Colorado and says feelings are running very strong. She doesn’t think there are many undecided voters.

Cadent · 23/10/2020 21:19

What will comedians and commentators do without Trump though?!

Echobelly · 23/10/2020 21:20

I really, really hope he won't, but I'm not betting on it. Like the UK's 'shy tories' I suspect there are quite a lot of 'shy Republicans' who don't much like Trump, but will always vote Republican even if they don't admit it when asked.

Without Covid I imagine he'd definitely be on target to win again, as a lot of the electorate simply enjoy having a President who thinks like they think - ie is nasty to women, black people, immigrants etc in a way they whinge they are 'not allowed to', but I think his botched response to COVID has probably turned a lot of waverers against him who might not have otherwised turned out.

Biden seems unimpressive, but there might just be enough people who want to see the back of Trump. Of course, we don't know what tricks of voter supression and refusal to accept results that he might pull out.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 23/10/2020 21:21

@TitoTipples I think I live in the same state as you....succession would be fine!

I don’t want Trump to win, I won’t be surprised if he does, I think it will be very close either way.

I hope Biden wins and then resigns #kamalaforpresident

wizzbangfizz · 23/10/2020 21:21

He will, sadly

Sheogorath · 23/10/2020 21:22

Make fun of Biden?

MiddleClassMother · 23/10/2020 21:23

Honestly it wouldn't be a surprise if he got back in. Remember the time Hillary was supposed to win? I echo the post about shy republicans. Just like here in the U.K. no one admits to voting Tory yet they get in?

Leaannb · 23/10/2020 21:26

Unfortunately I think he will win after a court battle. He is trying some really shady crazy crap right now. If he wins we are moving back to the UK. Have all ready spoken to a real estate agent and everything

HooverWhenTheCoastIsClear · 23/10/2020 21:28

@KihoBebiluPute

I think you are making the mistake of assuming that the majority of American voters are rational, intelligent and well-informed.
This attitude is why he won first time. People telling others their views aren't worthy, unintelligent and sneering at them.

He'll easily get back in. The left thought last time they just needed to bring put a woman, utilise popular culture and insult trump and they'd win. Now they're hoping the latest offering will win.

Lizadork · 23/10/2020 21:31

I think Trump will win but I really hope he doesn't. I lost my faith in humanity a long time a go.

sallievp · 23/10/2020 21:32

Betting....1.48 biden to win..3.05 trump to win!

TheNinny · 23/10/2020 21:32

I think will win the electoral college, and possibly lose the popular vote but that doesnt matter. Its actually quite rare for an incumbent president to be voted out. I think he's terrible, and biden on marginally better. But i don't think the U.S. population unanimously jate trump enough, and like Biden enough to get rid.

Hiliary was expected to win by almost everyone but still lost. I knew she'd lost when i watched her on stage with Jay Z and Beyonce the night of election waving gloriously to the crowd (unsure if live, i was on holiday, not american so didnt care too much). However the people she needed votes from were conservative, white women who would normally vote rep but who would maybe sway dem in certain circumstances. All the women like that i knew would be repulsed by her sucking up to.these 'rap' stars and would not be convinced. The next morning I was right. I think the same goes for Biden. I dont think he's enough to convince conservative white women e.g. trump supporters wives to vote dem.

I really hope I'm wrong as I'd love nothing better than to see Trump's smug face lose. But don't think Biden is enough.

ktp100 · 23/10/2020 21:33

I'd like to think he won't get back in but 2020 could have one last trick up it's arseholey little sleeves.

PathThreeTwoOne · 23/10/2020 21:34

I believe he has a great chance of winning.

Parker231 · 23/10/2020 21:36

@PathThreeTwoOne - why?

I’m amazed that anyone would want him as their President.

Time40 · 23/10/2020 21:38

It's the US of A and their thing - whilst nice to know about their elections, I'm not too bothered really

It really and truly isn't. It's about the future of the entire world. Trump getting back in would be an absolute disaster for action on climate change. This is the most important election in human history, for that reason. I am absolutely terrified of Trump winning.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/10/2020 21:39

It's 2020. Obviously he will get re-elected...

blueangel19 · 23/10/2020 21:40

all HooverWhenTheCoastIsClear exactly that is why there are so many silent voters for Trump. It is also a problem with the left. If anybody have different views they turn to insults.
