People vote for a candidate not against another one.
This is almost always true, but it's not true in this election. Donald Trump is so enormously polarizing that the election really has become a referendum on him--and how the country looks under him.
As for Biden being a weak candidate, in a normal race, absolutely. But one of the weird things in this race is that he's a chameleon. Because he's not particularly strong in any direction, people put on him what they need.
So, there's this ad, aimed right at older and suburban voters, narrated by the brilliant Sam Elliot:
And the very same day, this ad, aimed at young, progressive and/or disaffected voters who didn't support Biden originally:
I'll be clearBiden wasn't my choice (not that I can vote, but I live here, so I can't avoid talking about it!), but he seems to be doing a decent job of not alienating Democrats while appealing to Republicansand it's all because people feel very, very strongly about Donald Trump.
(I still am not saying that I think Biden will win.)
