To think that Trump is not going to get re-elected?

There are still a few fringe types who think he’s going to get a landslide victory.

Personally I find this unlikely.

Any MNers from across the pond have a view more informed than myself?

Trump is dreadful but Biden is a weak opponent. I don't think Biden will be a good President. I think he will struggle to see out his term. He looks old and tired whilst not being much older than Trump who does not look old (just terrible).

Americans are very stars and strips, traditionalists away from the major liberal cities. The blue collar vote. I think he will get it again.

On one instagram page I recall someone criticising Trump and I was shocked to see responses from across the pond along the lines of "how dare you criticise our President". Its not like here where anyone is fair game.

Shizzlestix · 24/10/2020 10:11

My only consolation, thinking Trump will clearly get in again, is that he’s not allowed a third term, although I seriously think he’d try to change the law if he does get back in.

BlueThistles · 24/10/2020 10:28

His Son or Daughter will run 🌺

blueangel19 · 24/10/2020 11:01

‘Many years later a Teacher in France is beheaded by a Student for teaching Liberté, égalité, fraternité.’

May be just may be people in the US will vote against this happening there.

Proudboomer · 24/10/2020 12:18

The left is going to far and now attacking people who won’t do as they say.
Look at the case of Chris Pratt. He hasn’t come out for either party but because he didn’t take part in a Biden fund raiser he is now being cancelled by the idiots of twitter land.
I am not a fan of holier than thou Hollywood but at least some of his friends are defending him.

Unicorners · 24/10/2020 12:22

I think Trump will get back in unfortunately. Biden just doesn't seem like a strong enough opponent.

How is it so hard to find decent presidential candidates in such a massive country?!

blueangel19 · 24/10/2020 12:23

all Proudboomer They are deluded that do bot realise how counterproductive this is. Then they will be asking why Trump still wins and insulting the people that voted for him. Trump, Farage, etc,,, are an answer to this non sense. The only ones to blame are themselves.

MagicoRomantico · 24/10/2020 13:08

If Trump gets in again China will definitely become the world's main superpower. He's well on his way to turning the US into a third world country. The only thing they've still got is the arms.

HelloToMyKitty · 24/10/2020 13:32

If Trump gets in again China will definitely become the world's main superpower

Nonsense. China took advantage of the trade imbalances between the US and themselves for years. Finally, there is a president willing to stand up and equalize this balance.

I say that as someone who has lived in China and loved my time there (this was pre-Xi) but it doesn’t make sense for voters to let one small class of Americans profit at the expense of the masses.

He's well on his way to turning the US into a third world country

Umm, wages for the lowest wage workers were actually rising under Trump ... well, until COVID. Absolute BS.

If you had money to invest, where would you do it? Anyone with sense would invest in the US (and don’t say China, Chinese don’t even want to invest there).

The only thing they've still got is the arms

Lol that’s called Russia 🇷🇺

Nancydrawn · 24/10/2020 14:06

@tobee

People vote for a candidate not against another one.
This is almost always true, but it's not true in this election. Donald Trump is so enormously polarizing that the election really has become a referendum on him--and how the country looks under him.

As for Biden being a weak candidate, in a normal race, absolutely. But one of the weird things in this race is that he's a chameleon. Because he's not particularly strong in any direction, people put on him what they need.

So, there's this ad, aimed right at older and suburban voters, narrated by the brilliant Sam Elliot:

And the very same day, this ad, aimed at young, progressive and/or disaffected voters who didn't support Biden originally:

I'll be clearBiden wasn't my choice (not that I can vote, but I live here, so I can't avoid talking about it!), but he seems to be doing a decent job of not alienating Democrats while appealing to Republicansand it's all because people feel very, very strongly about Donald Trump.

(I still am not saying that I think Biden will win.)

Silvergreen · 24/10/2020 14:28

He'll lose. The growth in voters this time are the same people who voted Obama in but stayed at home for Clinton.

cologne4711 · 24/10/2020 14:29

Trump will get re-elected.

I hope this post doesn't age well but at the moment I think people who think Biden will get elected are deluded.

I suppose Biden has one big advantage over Hillary Clinton - being male.

Merryoldgoat · 24/10/2020 15:41

@HelloToMyKitty

It’s one thing to disagree with how to control immigration, it’s another entirely to want all immigrants to leave and be kept out by a wall

Ok, it’s this sort of stuff.

I don’t have an issue with the wall (I actually think it’s a waste of money though since the border is ridiculously long) but just because you want a wall on the border doesn’t mean you want ‘all immigrants to leave’.

But the US just can’t let illegal immigrants stay, they really do hurt blue collar workers by suppressing wages. And both Democrats and Republicans have been guilty of turning a blind eye to this problem.

No, I know not everyone one will - but some people DO.

If your family previously had no such thoughts and suddenly completely changed then it would be very hard to put that aside.

I don’t like The Conservative government. I have good friends who are conservatives and we’re fine and agree to differ.

That isn’t possible in the scenario the PP described.

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 24/10/2020 16:20

Jumping on the family disconnect as well - my FIL voted for Brexit and I’m a die hard snowflake but we manage to run along still.

I have friends here who have had to go NC with their family because when they go home MAGA hats are displayed and their views that align with the worst of Trump are voices loudly and violently. A lot of my friends here are gay and that alone has caused rifts because Trump has allowed bigoted thinking in some parts of the country, they don’t want to be NC with their families but some of them just have no choice any more. It’s not just politics, it’s very very personal too

Parker231 · 24/10/2020 17:33

Really interesting to read the posts from those in America. I read Trump’s Twitter posts and they are horrendous. I can’t imagine why anyone would vote for Trump and hope he isn’t re-elected.
DH and I are leaving the UK due to Brexit (plans held up due to Covid) but when we were looking at where to move to, America was totally ruled out due to Trump (nor do I want to live in a country where gun ownership is so easy).

BiBabbles · 24/10/2020 17:42

I really think it's pretty much a toss up in so many areas right now. I'm not sure how to call it.

I don't like Biden he is as left wing as Corbyn was.

The Libertarian party has more left policies than the Democrats at the moment (which came as a surprise to me as US Libertarianism is pretty much synonymous with the Ayn Rand kind). Biden is farther right than many mainstream Tories, as is most the Democrat party. The left in the US is pretty much only represented by a small handful of mainstream politicians and some of small parties.

People vote for a candidate not against another one.

Most people vote for, but people do vote against candidates, to send a message, and some people will simply not vote if they don't like the main options. We're having a large turnout, but what kind of turnout I think is still up for question.

I'm from and my vote counts in a swing state, so I voted tactically. I've no idea how it will end up. If my vote went to a wall state - especially one that's been one for decades - I'd probably have gone for one of the smaller party. I know some have been encouraging this for months in part as a message to larger parties as it usually is, but this has been especially in red states knowing people won't vote Biden, but might vote Jorgensen or one of the others. Not sure what impact that will have if any, it'd be nice to think either the Republicans or Democrats listening to others. It's a right mess.

CoffeeandCroissant · 24/10/2020 17:43

Very low chance of the orange buffoon being re-elected, he has been behind in all the polls for months.

As for 2016 polls, see:

Sakura7 · 24/10/2020 17:43

I hope this post doesn't age well but at the moment I think people who think Biden will get elected are deluded.

There's no tangible reason to believe this. All the data is pointing in one direction.

I won't say the people on this thread who think Trump will win are deluded, as that's quite insulting and unnecessary. But I do believe they're either engaging in some kind of superstition, or are taking a pessimistic view to protect themselves from disappointment. I get that it's hard to be optimistic after recent experience.

Trump won the last election by a whisker because the stars aligned for him at the right point in time. The chances of lightening striking twice are very slim.

Imworthit · 24/10/2020 17:56

@ramblingsonthego

I have a feeling trump will win due to how it went in 2016. Everyone said he wouldn't and he did. I pray for humanity that he doesn't win, but 2020 is the year that keeps giving us shit.
This and I think all hell will break loose.

A lot of people are smart enough to keep their fucked up views to themselves. 😭

Bid876 · 24/10/2020 18:01

It will be interesting to see if he claims squatters rights if he looses 😂

Imworthit · 24/10/2020 18:03

@Bid876

It will be interesting to see if he claims squatters rights if he looses 😂
I believe this is the only true thing he has said
Imworthit · 24/10/2020 18:06

Sadly I don't think Biden is a strong enough opponant but trump is definitely a sociopath.
😂 Were fucked, welcome to 2020🤣

SunbathingDragon · 24/10/2020 18:10

I really hope he isn’t re-elected but then I never dreamt (or had nightmares) that he would be elected in the first place.

52andblue · 24/10/2020 18:18

I agree with @Ninetyseventhirtyfive:

"I think it's going to be very close, so close that Trump will cry voter fraud, push a legal challenge and his now majority conservative supreme court will call it for Trump"

The results for climate change are unbearable

Notanotherwooname · 24/10/2020 18:18

@ElsieMc

Biden may look old, but Trump sounds senile - he can barely string a coherent sentence together.
