I didn't stay awake for all the results last time. When I went to bed things were looking pretty blue and I fell asleep quite excited for the first female president. Was gutted when I woke up and found out.

This time I'm even more nervous. I think I'll stay up and take the 4th off work. I'm in a very anti-Trump location (Virgin Islands) but my DP is in Northern Cali and says it seems very pro-Trump out there. Pictures of house after house with Trump signs up.

Destructive, pointless, pathetic. Has Trump ever sat for a moment in these beautiful landscapes and marvelled at the wonder of this beautiful country?

Talking about Madame Tussaud's... this is apt...

thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/in-the-know/523650-berlins-madame-tussauds-places-wax-trump-in-a-dumpster-ahead-of

'Berlin's Madame Tussauds hauled its wax sculpture of President Trump into a dumpster Friday, according to Reuters.

The Trump replica was placed in a dumpster with the words "Dump Trump Make America Great Again" written on the front of it and surrounded by garbage bags and images of tweets reading "Fake News!," "I love Berlin," and "You are fired!"

The museum made the move in anticipation of Tuesday's election, marketing manager Orkide Yalcindag told Reuters.'

I've always liked Berlin. Smile

[quote Roussette]I can't get complacent.

What does this mean?

He os loosing their votes. They are staying home or voting for Trump

Leaannb · 30/10/2020 22:11

@Detroitdarkcafe

I agree, pond. Biden supporters are unlikely to commit civil unrest with guns. Trumps "fine people" aren't so reliable.
Really? So you think all of the rioting and looting over the summer were Trump supporters? There are more ways to cause civil unrest than with guns. Such as driving a car into a group of protestors in Virginia.
Roussette · 30/10/2020 22:15

And Charlottesville?

maggiethecat · 31/10/2020 00:35

Rousette - I will never trust polls again! I think the Dems will ignore them too especially perhaps because they appear to be ahead. Think Trump enjoys being the underdog and will even hope that Biden might take foot off the gas in believing the polls.

On the article re black and latino turnout - my sister's friend said she took her young black adult son to the polling station to ensure he cast his vote and was astounded when he came out and told her he had voted for an independent Confused. Apparently the independent vote among the young is trending heavily on SM.

PerkingFaintly · 31/10/2020 00:40

A lot of the Republican electioneering will be aimed at suppressing the Dem vote by any means.

They also like to use unattributed SM campaigns.

So it wouldn't surprise me in the teeniest tiniest bit if there were a right-wing SM campaign attempting to divert people towards independents – particularly people profiled from Facebook data etc as being unlikely to vote Republican.

In fact I'd actively expect such a campaign.

Detroitdarkcafe · 31/10/2020 00:42

Leanne, Im very glad you are voting Biden. However you seem to fail to understand the immense pain and suffering caused by the consistent murder, abuse and degredation of black Americans, by both the system and by an institutionally racist society. People are angry they have a right to be angry. Being calm has not led to any change. Framing the blm protests in this way is a typically redneck deplorable small minded, unempathic cruel act which will not lead to any healing, just more anger. We are a democracy with a right to protest. The heavy handed actions of Trump's jack booted feds fuelled the violence. The looting is mostly opportunists, not activists, and proud boy types trying to kick off a civil war, as happened in Minneapolis. Leanne, please educate yourself. You are embarrassing

Absolutely agree with this. A lot of younger voters really don't like or identify with either candidate, so it's relatively easy to deflect them towards wasting their votes independent candidates.
HoneysuckIejasmine · 31/10/2020 07:31

Jeez, don't they see what happened last time when people didn't want to vote for either candidate? Hmm

Roussette · 31/10/2020 08:41

maggiethecat Agreed. I've always been a bit sceptical about polls, but now even more so.

I am hoping that there will be many more ex Trump voters who have turned, but we now know that polls are worthless after the last debacle. However... there is no getting away from them, the polls are better than last time and my hope is that there is no misogyny to contend with this time.

As for independent candidates... there was an Independent National Convention last weekend... where the independents staged their own debates, it wasn't covered and Kanye didn't attend. It's worrying that voting for independents is trending on SM.

Outrageous chipping away at the democratic process.

If any of these efforts fail it doesn't matter because the overall impact is to raise doubts about the system itself.

lionheart · 31/10/2020 09:10

Four years:

www.nybooks.com/articles/2020/11/05/keep-your-wits/

'The moment Trump took office your life changed. You followed the press conferences, which were unlike any you had ever seen. They felt like daily beatings, but still you submitted to them. You read the torrent of tweets coming out of the White House and watched the Saturday Night Live parodies, and shared the funniest ones with friends. Until they no longer seemed so funny. You obsessively checked MSNBC and Democracy Now! and Twitter, passing untold hours with people who were just as appalled and obsessed as you were. The Mueller investigation began and you were transfixed. Later, the impeachment trial. Both fizzled out without anything changing. The hyenas howled in celebration and the outrages continued. You slept badly.'

Roussette · 31/10/2020 09:20

lion what a great article that is. It has me personally off to a T. Athough the next paragraph is about giving up, and none of us on here have given up. We're just holding our breath and waiting and hoping to get over the finish line...

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 31/10/2020 09:21

Hello, everyone, thanks for keeping this going for so long!
The Electoral College can really screw things up for Biden, right? Is it avoidable? And if it is, and if the Democrats get in, will it be possible for an Amendment to be passed to stop the stupidity of the Electoral College superseding the popular vote?

On another note, is everyone happy if I start a new thread later today, 50 more posts to go on this one, and I want to make sure everyone knows where to go for possibly the most important thread since we've started! Smile
