To be annoyed the cleaner travelled abroad while we paid her not to clean?

NC for this.

First of all, I know that I can’t ban anyone from travelling but I am annoyed and wondering if I have the right to be.

Our cleaner stopped coming at the beginning of lockdown. We continued to pay her weekly, I know some clients paid a proportion, some nothing at all. She was very grateful, said it was a huge help as she was skint.

As soon as lockdown lifted, she got on the plane to visit family in her home country (on the list with no need to quarantine).

All this time we’ve been super careful, not seen any grandparents, very little travel locally, let alone abroad (dh’s family is from Sweden and we’d love to visit but we are giving it more time). As I said, I know I can’t ban someone from travelling but then she’s clearly not that skint if she can afford plane tickets. I also think she has increased the risk to herself, and everyone she works for, by travelling at this time. I guess it doesn’t sit right with me that the money i was thinking was helping her through lockdown was actually funding her travelling.

YABU - she can spend her money any way she likes
YANBU - I would be annoyed as well

Shouldn’t have paid your cleaner for services not rendered in the first place.

Sissyjd · 23/07/2020 04:42

Wow just wow!! Did you get furlough pay op...did you ask your employees permission on how to spend it??

eaglejulesk · 23/07/2020 04:53

Wow - just wow! YABVU, and I'm glad I don't work for you.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 04:57

YANBU and I can't understand how you could even entertain the thoughts you have posted here in your mind

She is your cleaner, not your retainer.

mathanxiety · 23/07/2020 05:03

Paying more than you were obliged to doesn't mean you are above reproach, especially when the payment clearly came with expectations which were so spectacularly unreasonable they have people here wondering if this is for real.

You have no idea who paid for the cleaner's tickets, @JaniceWebster.

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 23/07/2020 05:08

This is more of a reflection on you than it is on her - you ought to run your estate properly and make sure everyone knows their place. Lesson learned for next time.

Poetryinaction · 23/07/2020 06:39

And if you went to see your family, you'd understand her being annoyed with you? You have absolutely no right to be annoyed. It's her life.

Vile.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 23/07/2020 13:08

@JaniceWebster

Jog on, with your momentually entitled bullshit.

to someone who paid a lot more than they had to as a gesture of good will, it's uncalled for.

The cleaner said she was skint, she isn't , not a big deal, just find a new cleaner.

How do you know she's not skint? Do you know the cleaner? For all we know, her family could've paid for her airline tickets, she could've sold a treasured piece of jewellery to get tickets.

The OP is a twat. Simple as and I hope the cleaner does not return to work for her after all of this, as it's clear she doesn't value her as a person, but as a slave. Disgusting attitude to have!

Smallgoon · 23/07/2020 13:13

I've come to realise that there are a number of trolls that use mumsnet and like to create bizarre threads which are utterly fictitious simply because they get off on the reactionary responses. My guessing is this is one of them.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 23/07/2020 13:14

I'm skint. I've not been at work since March and have lost a massive chunk of my income.

A colleague at my 2nd job in a bar constantly makes comments about 'you don't need the cash, you have a full time job' and it makes me feel like shit - because she doesn't know my circumstances - she just sees to the end of her nose. My boiler broke down 6 weeks into lockdown, which needed fixed urgently as it was causing a massive leak. I got it fixed and again the comments 'I thought you were skint' came out - we were skint, we still are skint but my husbands grandma gifted us the money to get the boiler fixed - not that it was anyone's business!! You just don't know the FULL story!

Emeraldshamrock · 23/07/2020 13:31

@Smallgoon HQ confirmed OP is a genuine poster.

Isotope456 · 23/07/2020 13:38

The OP is so spectacularly unreasonable that I can't honestly believe this is a real post. Arguably one of the most unreasonable thing I've ever read on here!

Topseyt · 23/07/2020 17:54

This OP is clearly came here for validation and isn't coming back because she has quite rightly had her arse handed to her on a plate. She is what many of us referred to as a dementor during lockdown.

Employers do not get to dictate how their employees spend the money that they pay them. It really is a simple concept.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/07/2020 18:45

I am normally all for privacy, but in this case I wouldn't be angry if any slip up happen and MNHQ would accidentally mention the posters usual name...

SantaClaritaDiet · 23/07/2020 18:51

It's probably a good thing the rules are the same for everybody then, isn't it.

Just noting that this OP has now deregistered. We've had a few reports about this one and so we're now going to close the thread.
