"Dementors" and anti dementors are just as bad as each other

212 replies

Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 10:27

I'm sick of seeing the self righteous "anti dementors" calling others dementors because they want to stick to the guidelines/social distancing/not licking walls.

If you don't believe we should all be totally back to normal yet then you're attacked as a dementor.

I think there's a middle ground of being sensible, taking precautions and being aware there is still risk. But the anti- dementor crowd think that's being hugely negative and living in fear.

I'm sick of it. Both extremes are as bad as each other.

dontjustdont · 19/06/2020 12:32

Can you not see why dementor is more offensive?

No, I can't - could you explain?

Well I'm not going to start replacing 'dementors' with 'Miserable fun-sponges whose only pleasures in life are wallowing in misery, predicting second waves and reporting imaginary rule-breaking by their neighbours'. It would take far too long to type a post

Exactly!

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/06/2020 12:32

Is there really a need for a 14th/15th thread of a group calling themselves "anti-dementors

Given that they are filling up a new thread every couple of days or so it seems that yes, there is a need for them.

They encompass a huge range of opinions all of which are tolerated and supported.

Pussycatinboots · 19/06/2020 12:33

I still haven't a clue what a "dementor" is...i thought it was mis-typed "demented" 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/06/2020 12:33

Why on earth it up to anyone to decide if there is a ‘need’ for a thread, other than the people who actually post on them.
Is there a ‘need’ for threads about cats? Not for me, I haven’t got a cat. So guess what? I don’t read those ones.
The anti dementor threads are a haven for me.

Willow2017 · 19/06/2020 12:36

@SockYarn

I think you've misunderstood.

The long running "anti-dementor" threads were started as an antidote to a certain group of posters going far above and beyond any official rules and demanding everyone else do the same. Anyone who refused to quarantine their post, never ever leave their house or who kept on buying "non-essential" items like milk was told they were personally responsible for people dying.

People on the anti-dementor threads aren't actively encouraging rule breaking, far from it. It's more about keeping things in perspective and realising that actually popping to Waitrose to buy a piece of cake isn't putting anyone at risk and the benefits of getting out and about are far better for you.

This with bells on. At the start of this the amount of made up roolz people were throwing around was ridiculous and the amount of screaming at people in CAPITALS because they pointed out the fact that they were wrong was incredible. People relishing 'reporting' family and neighbours for 'alleged rule' breaking was and still is sickening. Mn showed a distinct impression of a society ready to make up thier own rules and happily condemn anyone who didnt agree with them. The word Stazi wasn't used on here for nothing. It was terrifying how quickly people turned on other people even if they were in fact wrong. The hysterical screaming of "murderer" and various other vile accusations was sad to see from supposed adults in this day and age.The fact that they still tried to justify it with completely wrong information didn't matter to them on thier personal power trips. Its not a nice thought that these people are around us.

The anti-dementor threads were in response to this onslaught. You couldnt ask a simple question nor post a sensible view on anything without being told to "shut up you fucking idiot" if you dont agree with me on here.
We are all living within the same rules everyone else us. Nobody is advocating running round licking people. We discus normal everyday things that are impacted by lockdown and support each other through crappy times. We discuss the statistics and what they actually mean. We have a laugh which apparently isnt allowed now.
Nobody is forcing anyone to read them. But we aren't going away because you say so.
And anyone can use the word dementor it is very fitting for some of the people on here who just want to suck the joy out of every glimmer of hope at the moment. We will be back to normal life at some point whether they like it or not.
The fact that we are on the 14th thread says it all really.

Jkslays · 19/06/2020 12:36

@Jingstohang

I'm not reading the dementor threads, but the use of that language is carrying over to other threads which is why I find it irritating.

If it was just those threads I'd have no problem hiding them and carrying on, but it's coming up on "normal" threads quite often now.

Oh crap I can see ‘dementor’ being claimed as a ‘hate’ word now Hmm
Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 12:36

@Drivingdownthe101

I mean the thread link has been posted on their thread so, it's hardly going to be a balanced discussion is it?

Thought you didn’t read them?

I'm not sure confirming a suspicion counts as reading...?

I have no objection to both sides of the debate, but it does become skewed when a link is posted on a thread with a lot of the same opinion. A bit like if you did a brexit poll and posted it in a UKIP group.

Nobody is advocating running round licking people.

Speak for yourself

MarshaBradyo · 19/06/2020 12:37

I swerve them too

Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 12:39

Willow2017 I dont really care what's said on the dementor threads - I dont read them. But the word is cropping up all over the place now often when the poster doenst fit the dementor description and thata what I take issue with.

OP posts:
bubbleup · 19/06/2020 12:39

@Teateaandmoretea hi 👋🏼

bubbleup · 19/06/2020 12:40

Yeah, they've overtaken the people they had issue with. Complete role reversal

Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 12:43

@SockYarn

Are you ever going to let go of the fact that ONE poster said something about cheese instead of milk a long time ago when they were understandably afraid

Probably not. It's the funniest / most batshit crazy thing I've read on here in years.

I don't think it should be forgotten to be fair. If we do go into lockdown again (I really hope we don't), hopefully everyone will have a sense of perspective. The benefit of experience I guess. But maybe some people will have realised they like cheese in their coffee 🤷‍♀️

I’ve been really struggling with my mental health since about week 5 of lockdown. The worst I’ve been since PND 2 years ago (no coincidence there - being off work, hardly seeing anyone, breastfeeding all the time) and the anti-dementor threads bring a bit of sanity and humour into this shit situation. I love them.

AgentCooper · 19/06/2020 12:45

Also Let the Cabbages Die was one of the funniest things I have ever read.

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/06/2020 12:46

The fact that you could do box presses on a bench as it was ‘virtuous’, but couldn’t sit and eat a packet of quavers on one as it wasn’t ‘virtuous’ was quite amusing too.

Willow2017 · 19/06/2020 12:50

RTFT hen, I'm complaining about the use of the term outwith those threads.

Are you going to start threads on every word you dont like?
Why is it up to you what words people use to describe the absolutely

hysterical, joy sucking, misinformation spouting, capital letter using, scaremongering people on here and elsewhere?

Its a lot quicker to write dementor than the last paragraph.

Pertella · 19/06/2020 12:52

When you get people flinging around personal insults like "selfish moron" and "fucking idiots" at someone asking if they can hug their mum then "dementors" doesn't really match up as an insult.

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/06/2020 12:54

@Pertella

Exactly. I’m not sure being likened to a fictional character from a children’s book is quite on the same league as being a ‘murderer’, a ‘selfish bastard’, a ‘fucking moron’... all insults I’ve been aimed at people who are asking about things like popping to the shop for a pint of milk or sitting on a park bench mid walk.
Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 12:55

AgentCooper that's great, I'm glad theyve been helpful. Again, I dont care about the threads, it's the use of the word on other threads that I dislike.

Willow2017 it's a discussion forum....it's good to discuss?!

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 19/06/2020 12:56

The "crisps on a bench brigade" was my "highlight" although I never did work out how I fell with getting Nakd on a bench.
I was mid-run (virtuous)
For more than one hour (MURDER)
And ate a snack based on wholefoods (virtuous)
Although it contains cashews which may MURDER the next person with a nut allergy who dared to risk their life by sitting on a bench anyway.

And there we were for over 20 years, bemused by the mass hysteria over Diana's death. (Does that count as a sad death eventhough it was pre-covid?)

The world is a strange place and best treated with a bit of irreverance, especially in these uncertain times Grin

Drivingdownthe101 · 19/06/2020 12:57

There are lots of things on threads I dislike. If I find then genuinely offensive then I report them. If I merely dislike them I skim over them and roll my eyes.

MagdaS · 19/06/2020 12:57

I was also close to giving up MN entirely until I found the anti-dementor threads. I thought I was the only one who had any more balanced view of lockdown other than it must go on for ever and ever. My mental health was worsening.

Now I have good days and bad days but reading the contributions of the measured, sensible and funny women on those threads has kept my head above water and I am grateful to them all.

And there is obviously a need for them, or they wouldn’t fill up so quickly.

Willow2017 · 19/06/2020 13:00

Is there really a need for a 14th/15th thread of a group calling themselves "anti-dementors

There are far longer running threads on here are you going to tell them they have to stop too?

The fact that it's growing almost daily kind of emphasizes the need for a same place to discuss things, support each other, chat and have a laugh without fecking judgement from the thought police on here.

Willow2017 · 19/06/2020 13:01

Sane place!
