"Dementors" and anti dementors are just as bad as each other

Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 10:27

I'm sick of seeing the self righteous "anti dementors" calling others dementors because they want to stick to the guidelines/social distancing/not licking walls.

If you don't believe we should all be totally back to normal yet then you're attacked as a dementor.

I think there's a middle ground of being sensible, taking precautions and being aware there is still risk. But the anti- dementor crowd think that's being hugely negative and living in fear.

I'm sick of it. Both extremes are as bad as each other.

So you're complaining about threads you haven't read?

BamboozledandBefuddled · 19/06/2020 12:08

That can be done without name calling.

Very true. Maybe you should be pointing that out to the people who are often referred to as dementors.

RTFT hen, I'm complaining about the use of the term outwith those threads.

Wanderings no it does not.

HesterShaw1 · 19/06/2020 12:10

The anti Dementor threads meant I resurrected my long sleeping login. They have been a sanity saver from the startling one-eyed idiocy of FB, the Guardian and the BBC.

Three to four weeks into lockdown I was very close to going under, seeing as my business has gone down the pan with no guidance whatsoever about when it can resume, family 100s of miles away, living on my own, and a newish and happy relationship come to a screeching halt, and fear and paranoia at every turn. And people everywhere were telling me I should be happy and uncomplaining because at least I wasn't sadly dead. Thank fuck for the anti dementors.

Khione · 19/06/2020 12:13

@wanderings

I've just taken the CV topic and AIBU out of my lockdown (in other words, I've unhidden them) because now they're starting to be less polarised.

Mind you, I'm frequently pushing the view (with no apologies or regrets) that we are voluntarily sleepwalking into a 1984 society, and that the government are enjoying keeping the little people in their place, while refusing to communicate with them. Does that make me a dementor?

No, iff anything it makes you an anti dementor - You are a reasonable, intelligent human who can make a risk assessment for yourself and doesn't need the state to tell you in detail that you cannot do something that is as safe as it needs to be.
BamboozledandBefuddled · 19/06/2020 12:17

Well I'm not going to start replacing 'dementors' with 'Miserable fun-sponges whose only pleasures in life are wallowing in misery, predicting second waves and reporting imaginary rule-breaking by their neighbours'. It would take far too long to type a post Hmm

SockYarn · 19/06/2020 12:18

Easy checklist. If you answer yes to any of the following you're probably a dementor:

Do you think cheese is a reasonable substitute for milk in coffee?
Do you class any drink as a luxury, given there is water in the tap?
Did you pour scorn on anyone who bought Easter Eggs?
Do you think that people "popping to the shops" are responsible for Covid deaths?
Do you search out the most pessimistic stats to share?
Do you believe the government has covered up loads of deaths to massage figures?

bubbleup · 19/06/2020 12:22

Are you ever going to let go of the fact that ONE poster said something about cheese instead of milk a long time ago when they were understandably afraid? Are you ever going to stop using it as an excuse to call a large portion of posters names? As the situation has levelled out a bit is there really a need for a 14th/15th thread of a group calling themselves "anti-dementors" Hmm

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/06/2020 12:22

I hid the Coronavirus topic within days of it being created, but still see threads sometimes from Trending. I was on the Coronavirus positive mental health threads for a good few weeks, they were a breath of fresh air. They gradually aligned with the anti-dementor threads and I moved over, although I only post occasionally, I read them most days. I agree entirely with Sockyarn.

If the term dementor has become more widely used (I haven't seen it elsewhere myself) then that's probably because it describes exactly how many people feel about certain behaviours. If it is being used directly to insult individuals it can be reported.

Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 12:22

Great to see the pile on from the dementor threads has arrived...

Tbh increasingly I cba with other threads. They usually start off sensible then the dementors pile in. It ends up in an argument, and tbh I have better things to do to needlessly argue with idiots. I venture onto a couple a week, like a fool.

There are a lot of people on mumsnet right now who will listen to no reason at all, outside of ‘people are dying from covid’.

Teateaandmoretea · 19/06/2020 12:25

Great to see the pile on from the dementor threads has arrived...

Or maybe you are just seeing that most of MN feel this way.

ExpletiveDelighted · 19/06/2020 12:25

What did you expect given your thread title?

I mean the thread link has been posted on their thread so, it's hardly going to be a balanced discussion is it?
OP posts:
Teateaandmoretea · 19/06/2020 12:27

@jingstohang there is no balanced discussion about this anywhere on mumsnet apart from the anti-dementor threads 🤦🏻‍♀️

BamboozledandBefuddled · 19/06/2020 12:28

@Jingstohang

Didn't you want a discussion on your topic, with input from both sides, plus contributions from those who have no strong views on the subject? If not, why on earth would you post on a discussion forum. I think what you're looking for is called an echo chamber.
Allflightscancelled · 19/06/2020 12:28

s there really a need for a 14th/15th thread of a group calling themselves "anti-dementors"

Well clearly you don't need it, but others have also clearly said they do. So why don't you just go and read something you DO need? I don't need loads of the threads or even topics on here but I'm delighted they exist for those who do want them.

Jingstohang · 19/06/2020 12:28

Teateaandmoretea how can they be balanced if everyone is of the same opinion though?

Everyone isn’t of the same opinion. They just respect that others have different opinions and don’t call people ‘ridiculous’ if they post something they disagree with.

Have you seen the sheer numbers on the thread? We can’t possibly all have the same opinion.

Probably not. It's the funniest / most batshit crazy thing I've read on here in years.
