A greedy bastard breakfast

SquishyBones · 09/06/2020 20:34

I was speaking to an old friend this morning who laughed and asked if I still had greedy bastard breakfasts. I asked what he was on about and he started going on about what I used to eat really laughing and banging on and exagurating saying I used to eat a couple of boxes of cereal and 2 loaves of bread etc.

What I actually had was a bowl of cereal, toast, a yogurt and a banana. This is what he called a greedy bastard breakfast. I feel like he’s been taking the piss out of me for years for this but never had the balls to bring it up with me.

That's a perfectly normal breakfast! My 8 year old will eat that for breakfast.

I'll have two slices of toast with two eggs, smoked salmon or bacon etc etc and coffee and juice.

I'm a size 10 by the way and all my kids are slim.

Eating a good breakfast means you're less likely to snack on unhealthy food between meals. Not sure if that's actually science but.....

FiveNightsAtMummys · 09/06/2020 21:18

Wow lots of judgement on what someone else eats. No wonder people feel "shame" around food.

Anyway op yes he was being very out of order. What may seem big to him won't be to someone else. Every body needs different amounts of calories and its absolutely fine.

TooOldForSims · 09/06/2020 21:19

Hmm...it looks like a lot...but then again cereal never fills me up and I always want more food afterwards so...Grin

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 21:19

FFS, a person being a rude fucker to a so-called friend but it's all about competitive under eating Hmm.

Samtsirch · 09/06/2020 21:20

I think what you eat for breakfast is your own business OP.
What he said sounds offensive, but it depends on how well you know each other and if this is typical of how the 2 of you interact.
I wouldn’t dream of thinking about anyone else’s opinion before I prepared myself a meal, I’m not asking them to eat it am I ?
Eat whatever you want to eat, don’t let other people’s silly comments upset you.

sar302 · 09/06/2020 21:20

I thought this was going to be a post asking for recommendations for a greedy bastard breakfast - I came here for inspiration Blush

Samtsirch · 09/06/2020 21:23

Perhaps he had just heard of the phrase «greedy bastard breakfast « and was desperate to introduce it into his every day conversation.
You just happened to be the unfortunate one he tried it out on.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/06/2020 21:24

He sounds a dick.

zscaler · 09/06/2020 21:25

Can we counter this with examples of a true greedy bastard breakfast?

It was my birthday yesterday, and my husband brought me breakfast in bed. It consisted of an English muffin with sliced beef tomato and a vegan sausage patty, a side of 4 hash browns, a coconut yoghurt with fresh raspberries and a drizzle of agave nectare, two doughnut peaches, a large glass of orange juice and some alcohol free Prosecco.

I also once holidayed in America and had a fish of eggs benedict where instead of being served in English muffins, the (4) poached eggs were served on two patties made of breadcrumbed, deep fried risotto. That came with an absolute mountain of fried potatoes and a jug of hollandaise sauce.

It was bloody marvellous.

RaspberryIsMyJam · 09/06/2020 21:25

If I have a big breakfast, I always skip lunch. Maybe the OP did. Maybe her portions were small and she just wanted a bit of variety? At the weekends I always have a greedy bastard fry up. Always. I give no fucks what people think of this.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 09/06/2020 21:25

@sar302 me too! I love a massive brunch blowout!

zscaler · 09/06/2020 21:26

*dish not fish!

Notthecarwashagain · 09/06/2020 21:26

Your breakfast sounds good.

I usually only have a cup of tea, and then spend the rest of the day eating like The Hungry Caterpillar.

One of us is a greedy bastard- it isn't you though!

Bluntness100 · 09/06/2020 21:26

I’m sorry op but that made me laugh. I’m guessing you don’t find it so funny though.

On a serious note. Can I ask if you currently have a weight issue? Or an eating disorder? I find when folks get all upset about their food intake being slagged off then some times there is more to it.

So for example If you’re over weight you would react to his comments on the greedy bastard breakfast much much worse than if you were a healthy weight and ate a more reasonable amount the rest of the day or were very active. You’d be more likely to laugh it off.

Or if you had an eating disorder, it could also have hit a sensitive spot.

To be fair it is a lot of food for breakfast, generally people will have a bowl of cereal or some toast or fruit and yoghurt, not usually all three unless they’ve a hangover or some other reason to eat heavily in the morning,

WaxOnFeckOff · 09/06/2020 21:27

I thought it was going to be full english plus extras and cereal and toast and pastries.

I don't eat breakfast any more, but there are times in my life where that wouldn't have touched the sides (funnily those were the times when I was a beanpole).

That was rude OP and as others have said, we don't know the portion sizes or whatever else you are eating or when and what activity you do. I wouldn't say it sounds over the top.

MrsGrindah · 09/06/2020 21:27

What an odd thing to have a conversation about and to be annoyed about years later!

LadyFeliciaMontague · 09/06/2020 21:33

I just MyFitnessPal'd it and it came in at well under 500 calories for two slices of toast and butter, a bowl of Special K and milk, a Danone peach yoghurt and a banana

You need to recheck because that’s way over 500 cals

SaraLundsHairyJumper · 09/06/2020 21:33

God what a massive breakfast, I always only eat nothing or sometimes a buttered twig. Ahhh. Competitive Mumsnet starvation. What a time!

Bluntness100 · 09/06/2020 21:34

Also I just MyFitnessPal'd it and it came in at well under 500 calories for two slices of toast and butter, a bowl of Special K and milk, a Danone peach yoghurt and a banana

I think that depends on the size of the bowl of cereal, the type of cereal. The type of milk on it, the type of yoghurt, how much butter and what else is on the toast and how big the banana was. Yes it could be under five hundred calories, it could also be a thousand Or more, as the op hasn’t talked in detail there is no point in guessing the calories.

Megan2018 · 09/06/2020 21:34

My 9 month old baby has 1.5 weetabix, a couple of fingers of toast and a nectarine.

I sometimes have
3 sausage, 3 bacon, 3 eggs scrambled, mushrooms, beans, 3 hash browns, black pudding and 2 toast. That’s a big breakfast.

I love food.

Nandocushion · 09/06/2020 21:34

Surely the point of the OP wasn't whether her breakfast was actually big or not, but that she thinks this old 'friend' has been talking about her behind her back for several years and telling everyone she eats loaves of bread and multiple boxes of cereal in one sitting, maybe telling other people they know that she is basically a bottomless human dustbin, and she's just learning about it now?

AprilMay89 · 09/06/2020 21:36

Generally, comments about what people are eating don't seem necessary to me. The amount, or type of food someone is eating is not something I'd comment on, you never know their circumstances or how it might affect them.

I find people who say things about others eating habits are not doing it in a genuine way, it is for a reason, and it usually is to embarrass them I think.

Gingerkittykat · 09/06/2020 21:36

A true greedy bastard breakfast is sausage, bacon, eggs, haggis, black pudding, potato scones, beans, tomatoes with some thick buttered toast on the side.

I'm the opposite of you in that I eat almost nothing in the early part of the day and then eat a load at night. When I eat a big breakfast I find I don't do that.

If you look at breakfasts throughout the world you will see some countries actually eat what we would eat for dinner (like in Korea) and are probably healthier than us.

DisobedientHamster · 09/06/2020 21:36

generally people will have a bowl of cereal or some toast or fruit and yoghurt, not usually all three unless they’ve a hangover or some other reason to eat heavily in the morning,

Generally people eat whatever the hell they want. Hmm

MadameMeursault · 09/06/2020 21:36

That is NOT a greedy bastard breakfast OP. It’s supposed to be better to have the biggest meal of the day in the morning, gives you energy for the day. Your breakfast sounds perfectly healthy to me. You should feel sorry for your friend, he can’t have much of a life if he’s banging on about this and thinks it’s funny.
