You're white you haven't experienced racism 2 *title amended by MNHQ at OP's request*

I started a thread in the early hours.

I fell asleep Blush
I've checked the thread and it's full.

Whilst the thread sadly proves my OP, there were a lot of great posts and understanding by some MNers.

I think this discussion is so important and I'd like to continue.

These photos sum up the ridiculous responses.

Do not tell me I am doing my oppressed race a disservice
Your racial prejudice faced as a white person do not trump the daily racism and fear for our lives

Finally, if your response to this is to explain your tiny grievances of racial prejudices you've faced then you are wholly part of the problem.

The racist behaviours and thoughts by your people is the problem. It is your duty to understand and tackle it. I repeat, it is not the duty of black people to educate you.

On this thread white people are being told they should educate themselves, but even if they do, they will never understand because they are themselves the problem, due to being white. When they ask what they can do increase their understanding they’re being told it’s not the job of black people to educate them.
So white people can’t just know.
They can try and educate themselves but they’ll never achieve it.
They can’t ask for help educating themselves.
And anyway it doesn’t matter what they do because, at the end of the day, racist atrocities are carried out by “their race”, so they’re all one and the same anyway.

It’s possibly the most damaging race relations discussion I’ve ever seen.
Oh and let’s not forget that no one is allowed to share any experiences on this thread unless the OP gives her permission. She owns the thread. You have to start your own thread for that apparently.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:33

So did you expect white people to lie, or don't the experiences of white people count?

Huge difference between lying and just listening
Someone on the previous thread said no words but simply posted this image. I appreciate that.

I mean surely..... You can find the resources yourself? Black Lives Matter has a website..... Look at the hashtags on social media..... You can learn a lot.

People are literally shouting aboit their experience..... So its super easy to learn independently, now more than ever.

mbosnz · 04/06/2020 20:35

Well, one of the things we can do is read.

We can read things like 'The New Jim Crow', 'The Hate U Give', stuff like that, gaining insights from people that have written it down so that other people who are not feeling inclined (understandably) don't have to tell us.

There's some really good reading lists out there, to educate ourselves.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:35

I am not black so I can't know what it's like. I am from a white ethnic minority. You can't know what that's like. But we can both be tolerant and supportive of each other.

@Abbccc

We've been tolerant for too long.

Support you? You're not fighting for your lives. What on earth should we support you with during this?

@Miriel Tha
Nk you for listening. That's all I ask.

OP posts:
PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:36

This thread is not supportive or helpful to the black lives matter movement or the progression against racism.

Who are you to tell me that?

OP posts:
PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:37

You are actually being a proper racist OP

@TheFencePainter 😂😂😂😂😂 haha gotta laugh at that one.

Ok, well, I'm listening....
PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:40

@RosesandAnts Thank you. Hugs. I'm slowly but surely reading the original thread. I'm sad I missed a lot. But thank those who supported.

Here are a couple of books you can read if you ate one of those poor well meaning people desperate to learn and suffering terrible rejection trauma and poor me itis when black people don't spoon feed you the info.

"How to Be an Antiracist"
Ibram X. Kendi

"White Fragility"
Robin DiAngelo

"Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race"
Reni Eddo-Lodge

MarinePsychiatrist · 04/06/2020 20:40

What is the point of this thread?

I think a lot of people are wondering

The one last night I just thought OP was angry, lashing out and looking for a massive online argument. I'm kind of amazed she's started a new one just to continue that though.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:43

*I feel like there needs to be a better way of saying 'this is more a priority right now' than telling the folk you want to listen to you that;

'Your experiences don't matter right now'*

There literally isn't. Why should we water it down? This is a fact. Your experiences don't matter right now.
Black Lives Matter right now

@Mintychoc1 Why are you still here?
You said you won't engage with me but are engaging on my thread and making our fight harder.

You're not fighting for your lives. How do you know that? Do you actually feel that all black people's lives are at risk at the moment?
mbosnz · 04/06/2020 20:47

Thanks @Changednamesorry. I'll add them to the list. It's nice to be engaging the brain again!

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:47

@Changednamesorry Thank you. Those books are great suggestions. As a black person I'll probably be asked to read it to them Grin

BovaryX · 04/06/2020 20:48

@PatricksRum

Your posts are abusive, inflammatory and deliberately designed to incite racial division. Your thread title is a joke. You don't get to redefine the meaning of words according to your Newspeak dictionary. I am not white. I think your posts are offensive BS.

Mintychoc1 · 04/06/2020 20:48

Bizarre toxic thread. I really am out now.

Changednamesorry · 04/06/2020 20:49

Obvious typo but sure I'll go.

I meant to type "are"

@Mintychoc1 you have been deliberately antagonistic in every post you made on this thread.

MarinePsychiatrist · 04/06/2020 20:50

Racism is systemic; it is to do with the structure of society and the history of colonialism and slavery, therefore it can only exist from the ‘top down’ as it requires those who make the systems (historically and currently, these systems are constructed and controlled by white males); racial prejudice is something any individual of any race can feel or act on; it is of course completely unacceptable, and it may be caused structural racism in some cases, but it’s not the same thing

Oxford dictionary:
racism noun

the unfair treatment of people who belong to a different race; violent behaviour towards them

Cambridge dictionary:

racism

the belief that people's qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races:

Merriam-Webster:

1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2a: a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles
b: a political or social system founded on racism
3: racial prejudice or discrimination

Mintychoc1 · 04/06/2020 20:51

It’s that sort of thread. Nastiness meets nastiness. But I didn’t start it.

PatricksRum · 04/06/2020 20:53

The one last night I just thought OP was angry, lashing out and looking for a massive online argument. I'm kind of amazed she's started a new one just to continue that though.

You're right, I'm angry.
I'm not looking for an online argument.
I'm hoping that at least one person can read what I'm saying and use their privilege to aid our fight.
