You're white you haven't experienced racism 2 *title amended by MNHQ at OP's request*

I started a thread in the early hours.

I fell asleep Blush
I've checked the thread and it's full.

Whilst the thread sadly proves my OP, there were a lot of great posts and understanding by some MNers.

I think this discussion is so important and I'd like to continue.

These photos sum up the ridiculous responses.

Do not tell me I am doing my oppressed race a disservice
Your racial prejudice faced as a white person do not trump the daily racism and fear for our lives

Finally, if your response to this is to explain your tiny grievances of racial prejudices you've faced then you are wholly part of the problem.

The racist behaviours and thoughts by your people is the problem. It is your duty to understand and tackle it. I repeat, it is not the duty of black people to educate you.

I still hear you zebra

Shock horror @Hearhoovesthinkzebras comes back and makes it about her all over again.

"You don’t care for ‘white answers’? I do."

So why aren't you starting your own thread? That's not what OP wants to talk about, she has made it clear. Why don't you start your own if you want to hear that? Talk about self centred.

"This is what I don't understand." How many more times would you like it explained to you? Seriously how many more? Perhaps go and start your own thread too instead of also making this one about you.

The parents of the Kanneh-Mason family hoped their children would live in a world that was better than when racism killed Stephen Lawrence.

Listen to them.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 11:44

However, there are some countries that see white women as trash

Misogyny. They see all women as trash

Siameasy · 06/06/2020 11:45

Seriously white people please get a grip...if the worst thing that happens to you is that someone is a bit “rude” whilst explaining over and over about how they have suffered racism just take it on the chin, just listen.

(NB i don’t find the OP rude at all but she is understandably exasperated)

After centuries of atrocities committed by white people against black people we are extremely fortunate to only be met with “rude”. Are we not resilient enough to take a breath and listen and try to empathise with another person without our precious egos being damaged?!

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/06/2020 11:46

@Dreep

If that is directed at me, why does my view not count?

I really don’t think some of the posts have encouraged people to listen.

Sometimes there are better ways of expressing your views.

I won’t leave any thread for I am entitled to have an opinion. Unless of course you want me to stay oppressed and silent. Which isn’t really in keeping with my life mattering is it?

I'm so sorry for what you are experiencing on this thread.

I deplore racism of any kind and the intolerance towards you by some posters on here disgusts me.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 11:47

@Siameasy Thank you.

I stated earlier. I made the first thread, went to sleep and thought I'd awake to a permanent ban from MNHQ
That's how privileged white people are. You feel able to talk, even on an anonymous forum. I don't. I feared I would be banned.

Nonotthatdr · 06/06/2020 11:48

I’m thank you lndnmummy I have donated.

I do want to call out racism.

Because of where I live I don’t see much white on black racism. I do see some white on Asian racism which I call out. I also see some Asian on white racial prejudice (although as this was from an Asian female manager to her Polish female employee it could possibly be racism but I’m not sure) and some horrid Asian on black racism and this is where I get stuck.....

I guess what I’m trying to say is when my parents were racist towards my husband I told them to F off. When my non white in-laws are racist/racially prejudiced towards black people do I tell them to F off as well? Can I as a white person do that?

I’m not trying to be goady. I am Horrified at what I see and was so so sad that my daughter dosent see her own skin colour as skin colour - I’ve gone wrong somewhere and I’m not sure how to fix it.

Dreep · 06/06/2020 11:48

AIBU invites debate.

If OP wanted to exclude white people she should have said so. By mentioning that in the title it did invite all to respond. Not just white. Not just black. You responded. As did I.
Both our opinions are valid. But by the OP’s post she didn’t want your answer because you are white. And that is wrong.

And apparently black answers are ok but not mine. That is wrong too.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 11:49

Poor white people.
That's all I can say.
I havd more to worry about than a few honest MN comments. I worry for my life.

OP posts:
Blursula · 06/06/2020 11:49

I completely support the BLM cause and have shown my support in a previous post on this thread. I genuinely do appreciate your anger and frustration OP and I see these threads as important, I really do. However, posting on a (probably) majority white forum in a thread entitled ‘am I being unreasonable’ with the title ‘white people can’t experience racism’ was going to invite debate - surely that was inevitable?

To tell people to leave your thread (on a public forum) and now say ‘I don’t care for white answers’ is unlikely to get people staying and listening and empathising as to why this cause is so important. It’s counter productive, surely.

Dreep · 06/06/2020 11:50

I will stay OP. I don’t care if you dictate that my voice should not be heard.

You do not speak for me.

PatricksRum · 06/06/2020 11:51

@Blursula
Listen clearly yeah.
We have tried, we have fucking tried everything to be heard. Everything. Hundreds of years of oppression.
We have tried everything.
I continuously exhaust every avenue to make a tiny difference. So many posters have come on to thank me for the thread, for opening their eyes. That's a huge thing.
You don't know what will work that's why we're still being bloody killed!!!

Yes fair enough Patrick . I'm off to a thread in The Doghouse about people's experiences with puppies to tell them I want to talk about cats as I'm a cat owner and I need them to explain to me the basics of cat ownership. If they refuse as they want to talk about dogs I will pester and pester. If they then take the time to explain it to me I will argue with them and talk over them again and again about my own cat. Cats are equally important and its all about me you see as I want to talk about it now and it's only fair they answer me as I'm also really important. I might fill up the thread by posting repeatedly asking them to educate me about cats and arguing about cats. I have some really good tips from this thread how to do this.

(I am not comparing racism to cat ownership and I hope it's not offensive - I am trying to make a point about thread etiquette if nothing else. If it's offensive I will ask for it to be deleted)

Neome · 06/06/2020 11:51

The awful experiences of children preyed upon by criminal gangs in Rotherham and Rochdale would not have been covered up if

White people

had educated themselves

about racism.

YgritteSnow · 06/06/2020 11:51

I've reported the post where OP has asked others not to engage with @Dreep. This is out and out bullying of a person because they will not be forced to change their opinion. They too are a BAME person and I genuinely staggered that they are being ordered to leave a discussion on racism and others are being encouraged to ignore and other that person by the OP and that no one else is challenging this.

Flaxmeadow · 06/06/2020 11:53

There is a history of oppression of white people.

Yes the working class

Where please?

Everywhere

Where in history have black people oppressed white people?

The Barbary slave trade. This trade continued well into the 19th century

Racial motivated misogyny not racism.

Which actually very much is racism

It says something that you and many posters only have this to refer to.
Also Asians aren't black hth.

You invited white people to talk about this very thing in your thread.

Some of the members of those gangs were black and were convicted in courts of law

Because the majority of people in England are white
Calculate it properly and it will be the opposite.

Your claim is that white people are killing black people. In what numbers is this happening in England or in the USA

I've not once brought up black people killing black people.
I don't need to provide anything.

Because a high proportion of black people live in London.

But most don't

Black people lack opportunities because they're black.

I can agree with this point in general

White people don't.

Try being white and getting a job or buying a house in central Bradford

You can be black and poor.
I've answered already

You can be white and poor and a minority in your neighbourhood and suffer racism and lack opportunity

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/06/2020 11:55

@PatricksRum

Shock horror *@Hearhoovesthinkzebras* comes back and makes it about her all over again.
I'm not coming back to.make it all about me.

You and another poster tagged me in attacks about how I'm racist. Last night you called me a white supremacist. You don't get to make personal attacks on people and then expect them to not respond.

I don't care if you don't like my responses. I am not going to turn a blind eye to racism just because the person experiencing it isn't black. Yet me condemning racism has me labelled as racist.

Posters like Dreep are being treated appallingly on this thread.

WokeUpSmeltTheCoffee · 06/06/2020 11:56

Zebra all your posts come across as 'what aboutery'

What about disabled people
What about Jewish people
What about Asian people

Flax meadow wants to add what about poor white people

Yes these people suffer discrimination in their own right but it's not the same as the racism black people suffer and it's offensive to bring it up right now. The only thing I can compare it to is when there is a discussion about rape and sexual violence against women and some idiot always has to say 'gay men get raped too'. That makes me so angry. It's true but its nowhere near the same magnitude of problem and it's just a way to deflect from the discussion about women.

BAME is shorthand and it's helpful in some contexts as some experiences are shared but by no means all. Black people have a specific history of being enslaved and transported en masse that Asian people don't although they did suffer colonial oppression.

Racist stereotypes about black men are that they are aggressive and violent and this directly leads to their deaths at the hands of law enforcement because a disproportionate level of violence is felt justified. There are other stereotypes about Asian men but not this specific one.

I just looked up the UK stats and it is only black people and NOT Asian or other minority ethnic people who are disproportionately dying in police custody. For other ethnicities the death rate reflects the population.

So right now this specific issue of police brutality is about black people and not about anyone else.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/06/2020 11:57

@PatricksRum

Anyone engaging with *@Dreep* i kindly ask you to refrain please. Not trying to be bossy. They don't want a discussion. Just filling up the thread with nonsense
You don't get to make that call.

This isn't your thread. What you are doing is excluding a person because of their race. How is that ok?
