So another killing of a black man Ahmaud Arbery by 2 white men (Father and son) in US. They nearly got away with it calling it a citizen arrest and self defence. Father was a retired policeman.

They followed him, armed with guns and shot him.

Prosecutors tried to cover it up until the video emerged.
Ahmaud’s crime? He was going for a jog.

Will black lives ever matter?

I have been to volunteer in India twice, Thailand, Nepal, Africa, Indonesia and Romania.
I even remember, the last time that I went to volunteer in Nepal. A woman that I barely knew contacted me on facebook and sent me a load of abuse saying that I was acting like a white saviour for going to Nepal, to help children.

She was so cruel and nasty that I haven't been to volunteer anywhere again. No matter what you do, some one tries to tear you down. Usually because they havent gotten off their own arse

just because you haven't gotten off your arse and volunteered abroad, it obviously doesn't even wnter your head that other people might.

Right, because everyone can afford to do that.

@Annamaria14

You are either a troll, or one of the most ignorant people ever on the subject of race and racism or both. You continue to spout utter CRAP, and accuse people of ‘not getting off their own arse’ when it’s quite clear from reading your responses upthread you don’t have a grasp on the basics yet feel justified to tell people to eff off .Utterly vile behaviour! And yes, you are RACIST. A proud one it seems!!!!

@Annamaria14 You’re coming across as incredibly entitled and literally the epitome of white privilege. the fact someone has found you to tell you this is quite telling.
You should be humbled by the experiences not do them so that you can brag about them and aren’t you so very lucky you can do that type of volunteering.

If I didn’t like cats and I saw one had just been run over and I rescue it and take it to the vet and pay the bill for it , it doesn’t mean I now like cats, it’s just an act , the right thing to do.

White people pretending that because they work with the underprivileged or have volunteered in Africa doesn’t mean you aren’t racist.

If you question why it’s wrong that a black man was shot for jogging and seek to find ways to eradicate the racial motivation, you are racist. This was a hate crime , a racist hate crime .

Why did it upset you so much when your friend pointed out that your voluntourism could be problematic? Would it not my more sense to look into whether this could be the case, and look into other ways of helping?

If you truly felt your input was important to these children, why would one person expressing disapproval cause you to stop? Was it more about you, and the way it made you feel? Almost like . . . a saviour?

I'm from one of the countries you volunteered in, is that abroad enough for you?

This.

@annamaria14 your focus throughout this thread has been an antagonistic need to be "not racist" despite saying many things that many of us felt showed intrinsic racism. Maybe it's worth thinking about why people thought that, even if you think their belief is wrong, so that in future you can work on not presenting yourself in a way that comes across as something you say you aren't.

The attorney of the men who shot him has accused the public of rushing to judgement. You know, judging the people who decided that a black man going for a jog was dangerous enough to be shot.

Interesting that McMichael senior did not complete mandatory training whilst working at the DA office and as a result lost his gun and power of arrest. Also, interesting is that he completed only one training course in the use of de-escalation tactics, but completed four courses devoted to “understanding Islamist terrorism” and another on “introduction to terrorism”.

Ben Crump who is representing the family of Ahmaud Arbery has also been hired to represent the family of Breonna Taylor.

He has made a very interesting point,

They’re killing our sisters just like they’re killing our brothers, but for whatever reason, we have not given our sisters the same attention that we have given to Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Stephon Clark, Terence Crutcher, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, Laquan McDonald. Breonna’s name should be known by everybody in America who said those other names, because she was in her own home, doing absolutely nothing wrong. If you ran for Ahmaud, you need to stand for Bre

I totally agree, anybody that thinks it’s okay because people of all races are killed everyday are ignorant. If it was a white man jogging they’d of thought twice about shooting him, but his life didn’t matter To them because he was black.

Just logged on after ages and found another thread about a white woman in central park threatening a black man with the police. The thread has so many racists trying to falsely portray Ahmaud Arbery as a thief. They don’t even try to hide their racism.

The Black lives matter movement has nothing to do with Corbyn, it is standing up for racial injustices that black people have experienced for years and years, and still experience today. People are standing up now because of the fact that being quietly racist isn’t enough anymore. Black people lose their lives and experience racism every day. I think white people are finally being educated and are beginning to understand that their silence about the issue is compliance in a racism system. Black people are protesting for their fundamental human rights, I think damage to property pales into insignificance compared to actual human lives; mothers, fathers and children killed as a direct result of the colour of their skin.

To say “other minority groups like Jewish people are oppressed too, what about them”. Misses the point of this entire movement, no one is saying their lives don’t matter. They’re saying right now we are talking about black people’s lives.

This is one of the biggest movements we have seen in recent times, they will write about it in history books. Hopefully it will be a change towards more equality. I know I’d rather be on the right side of history protesting for human rights, or donating to organisations etc, than doing nothing. Imagine telling your grand children that during one of the biggest uprisings of our time, you did nothing.

Some of the racist, ignorant comments on this thread are disgusting. George’s killing represents MANY black people who are killed in similar ways, for doing nothing wrong. If you are not horrified and uncomfortable with this happening, then you need to take a good look at yourself. Racism underpins much of our society whether you accept it or not. Until white people accept that and educate themselves, and speak up for Black people then they are the problem.

Of course YANBU. Institutionalised racism is real. The only people who can't see it are those who actively choose not to.

All lives matter. There are some disgusting people in the world but the extremely small minority dose not represent society as a whole. I think you are unreasonable for thinking it dose

All lives don’t seem to matter. Do your research. It’s also not a small minority

From this post I’m assuming you have not experienced racism personally

A woman of colour is currently receiving death threats for eating a lolly in a park in Hackney, she is receiving those because a number of racist white wingers believe a woman daring to eat a lolly an hour an a half before people were attacked means she is pro those attacks.

A black man has also been arrested for firstly being black, secondly having a nice car and thirdly for having a tin of vaseline in his pocket. He was then taken to the station and strip searched, better not carry lipbalm around in public anymore, a dangerous weapon.
@gobbynorthernbird I agree. And Killing him was a terrible thing to do.

But it made me think that those two were jot just racist assholes. Seeing him entering a house in their neighbourhood, got those two men to panic and over react. They thought he was a robber. It is a sad chain of events
