Will black lives ever matter?

So another killing of a black man Ahmaud Arbery by 2 white men (Father and son) in US. They nearly got away with it calling it a citizen arrest and self defence. Father was a retired policeman.

They followed him, armed with guns and shot him.

Prosecutors tried to cover it up until the video emerged.
Ahmaud’s crime? He was going for a jog.

Will black lives ever matter?

The jury will decide what happened once the full facts are known. That is how the law works.

thisenglishlife · 11/05/2020 18:26

Hasn't it now come to light that he had been breaking in and stealing stuff - and WASN'T jogging?
No, it hasn't.

I have regularly looked at houses under construction during various walking routes home from work. It isn't suspicious. Sometimes I would stop for a minute or more to view the progress.

Even if he had stolen a thing a day, everyday since he was 18, it doesn't mean that people can block him with vehicles and wave guns in his face... Let alone shoot him, even if it due to a 'struggle'.

Jangirl2018 · 11/05/2020 18:31

@Xenia

Yep, i’m clear on how the law works love Grin

sauvignonblancplz · 11/05/2020 18:54

@Annamaria14 Are you being racist or victim shaming?

I think you would be the same woman who would want to see what a woman was wearing before she was raped.

You’re delighted in your own responses, pure ignorance.

sauvignonblancplz · 11/05/2020 18:57

@Xenia
The ‘full facts’ as put together by the white police force. The same police force who waited nearly two weeks to arrest the men who murdered him in broad daylight, who only arrested them after being exposed for neglecting the case entirely.

Yeah justice will be done Hmm

MagentaRocks · 11/05/2020 19:00

If he had been waving a gun around in the minutes before or had threatened the shooters with a gun that would be relevant and possibly justification.

Looking at a house being constructed earlier that day is not relevant, being arrested 2 years ago for theft is not relevant.

C130 · 11/05/2020 20:24

Exactly MagentaRocks.

Ah bless you, Xenia. That's not how it works in America.

It's a shame the murder victim accused of being a criminal never got a chance of trial and jury. God bless fucking America

DeeCeeCherry · 11/05/2020 23:44

Annamaria14 never mind your disingeneous 'huh' to my question. You wanted to ascertain what happened beforehand - as if that could somehow justify cold-blooded execution. So here's my question to you again.

do you have information regarding a new law we don't know about that legalises citizens chasing down and executing an UNARMED MAN whatever he may or may not have been doing? If you do then when did this law take effect? Do you have the details?

RockLock · 12/05/2020 00:48

Xenia, You obviously have no idea how the justice system works in US.

Next you’ll be telling us that justice is blind in America Hmm

Why can't some people on this thread get it into their heads that he died because he was black? Pure racism.

This is worth reading:

Those people don't want to get their heads around it. Racists never, ever change and I never have an expectation that they will. I find it interesting to take part in threads such as these just sometimes - the silly and convoluted lengths most racists will go to rather than come out with 'Im racist, I don't care if black people are killed so what' is no surprise. American racists are blatant. English racists are sly. It's worse to be called a racist than be or admit to being a racist.

I used to work with an English guy who couldn't get his head around his step-son being racist. Son had black friends he got on well with. But when they weren't around & he was with family and other friends he'd use the most derogatory words and terms about black people. Even if conversation wasn't about black people he'd find some way to take it there, so he could start.

Colleague just couldn't understand it. I could, though. Very clearly.

Aw bless.

RockLock · 13/05/2020 00:04

Seems to be some assuring news. Apparently Georgia does not have a law against hate crime Hmm but US justice department is considering whether the father and son can be charged under federal hate crime law.

I really hope they do and whilst they are at it, charge the two racist DA’s as well.

Doesn’t really work in that part of the US though. Look at the Curtis Flowers case. Region has majority Afro-American yet every single trial he got had an all white jury. Funnily there seemed to be a reason for the prosecution to strike off every potential black juror leaving all white (and redneck) juries. This is allowed to happen and seems very common so one would debate the ‘fair trial’ aspect in these parts of the US.

ToffeeYoghurt · 13/05/2020 01:42

OP, your question is also relevant to the handling of the pandemic.

Black people are dying in larger numbers than white people. Lifting lockdown without taking the necessary measures to make it a safe possibility affects them more than white people. It's not as if the measures required are that difficult. Other countries have managed it. Simple things like enough PPE for frontline staff, accurate tests, early treatment.

I asked this the other day on another thread. All those people insisting we need to 'just get on with it' and take the risks. Would they be saying that if Covid was disproportionately affecting the white middle class?

Xenia · 13/05/2020 07:54

I am certainly never happy about any racism. On the Covid 19 issue that is very troubling and needs to be looked at very carefully. We may well need to protect certainly groups more -0 that actually includes fat older white men too - eg Boris J had it badly presumably because he is overweight whereas Matt Hancock had it very mildly as he is slim. It is going to be very hard to be fair in the workplace over this issue too. I suppose one good thing might be women don't get made redundant or put on furlough and senior white fatter men might be laid off as women are not as much at risk particularly if they are slim and younger. Perhaps we can use it as a way to get more women whatever their colour into positions of power .

SayNoToCarrots · 13/05/2020 10:00

😂 at annamaria saying she's not racist after proving it time and time again in this thread.

www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/black-woman-shot-killed-after-kentucky-police-entered-her-home-n1205651

A black woman was asleep in her Louisville, Kentucky, home when three police officers forced their way inside, "blindly fired" and killed her, according to a lawsuit filed by the woman's family.

I wonder if people will be along to ask if she was sleeping suspiciously.

I have volunteered all over the world with people who are suffering because of their race

Yeah I bet you have🙄. Is this the alternative version of 'I have black friends?'

If you really had volunteered you'd know there's a lot of shit goes on. & Staff turn a blind eye to it. Racist in itself don't you think? You probably don't think tho

SayNoToCarrots · 13/05/2020 14:44

@Annamaria14 I can ask you the same thing.

Annamaria14 · 13/05/2020 14:59

@DeeCeeCherry just because you haven't gotten off your arse and volunteered abroad, it obviously doesn't even wnter your head that other people might.

Loads of people volunteer abroad.

Do you want the specifics? One thing that I did was volunteer for six moths with Indian and African refugees on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. I saw the fear that those syrian refugees had been through.

So fuck off @saynotocarrots and don't ignorantly call anyone racist again
