So another killing of a black man Ahmaud Arbery by 2 white men (Father and son) in US. They nearly got away with it calling it a citizen arrest and self defence. Father was a retired policeman.

They followed him, armed with guns and shot him.

Prosecutors tried to cover it up until the video emerged.
Ahmaud’s crime? He was going for a jog.

OP YANBU, this is an absolutely horrific story and one (among many others) that people of all races really should be fucking angry about.

Yes, it also happens to white kids. The racism comes in because it is twice as likely to happen to a black kid than a white kid. It’s not a case of only happening to black kids and never to white kids. So putting statements like this are both untrue and dismissive of other nonblack victims of police brutality.

Happened in February. Been no charges or arrests until now. If hadnt released the video who knows..hopefully this will now lead to the right sentence. Shouldn't have taken this long though.

Racism is rife.

And the cover up by the police department means that this is also about systemic racism and corruption.

I’m assuming the people missing the point and saying All Lives Matter are white.

Op - honestly? I don’t know. There is so much ingrained racism that we are still a long way off.

Of course it is outrageous, but remember that is the US and not the whole world. As a culture they never entirely got used to seeing black people, women and gays as human. They are not too sure about Mexicans either and the poor.. well ...

Of course we have some of that here, but not as ingrained in the system and culture.

The cover up and refusal to arrest the perpetrators seems unlikely to happen to a white kid in the US.

It’s very hard to have this conversation in the U.K. OP, even through we have our own issues re racism. Many people refuse to see it.

Non black people will ever understand what it is like to be black, as they have never had to live with the discrimination and prejudice.

That greys anatomy clip is heartbreaking . A 13 year old child should not be having to think like that.
As for the man who was shot for jogging , people don’t want to accept that racism is alive and well .

Trying to debate racism on Mumsnet is impossible. The prevailing attitude on MN is that racism doesn’t exist, except for anti-white racism, which is the worst thing in the world, and also that accusing someone of being racist is a horrendous crime and just as bad as actually being racist.

I’m sure there are lots of decent people here, but they get drowned out by the posters who are either simply very ignorant and wish to remain so, or those who are card carrying white supremacists.

I wonder if a white jogger had been ambushed and shot on camera by 2 black men if it would have taken so long for the assailants to be arrested. Well, I don't wonder. I know it wouldn't. R.I.P. And I made my comment with the privilege of being white. I can't imagine the difficulties black people face, just for the colour of their skin.

The justification for it is also worrying. Why would your thought just be to shoot a unarmed person?! If concerned call the police dont shoot someone. Then again seeing how long the police have taken to act over it.

YANBU! People here are loonies if they think anyone other than a black man in America would be hunted down in a pickup truck whilst going for a jog in his own neighborhood! What happened to him is NOT normal or comparable to any other murder! Black men like him have the right to feel safe without being hunted and gunned down like an animal. So all you 'Karens' out here glossing over the facts can take a long look in the mirror. It took leaked footage of the murder and intense political pressure for these two men to be arrested. This happened over 2 months ago and these two white men were going to get away with it!

There was a programme on last night too about the rise in racism in the UK within the past 5 years. Just heart breaking.

I really don't get how people can hear "Black Lives Matter" and think that it means Only Black Lives Matter rather than Black Lives Matter Too

Anyway, YANBU although the only good thing is that the UK is a bit less racist than the US. There's still quite a lot of racism, but I don't think you see stories like this happening over here quite as often. The USA is really another level.

Ok, I don’t consider what happened to be vigilante anyway. Usually vigilante is shooting a robber fleeing your house, or shooting someone you think raped your daughter. In other words, it’s taking justice into your own hands to someone who did you wrong.

It's shocking. For a site that seems pretty liberal overall, there is a massive blind spot when it comes to racism.

I remember a thread where people got incredibly offended that an Asian woman asked if she would likely experience racism in a certain county and people ripped into her. "How dare you suggest we're racist!" It was ridiculous. These people have clearly never experienced it or they wouldn't think like that for a second.
