Clearly everyone is having a different experience of the current situation. It seems to me from the posts here and elsewhere that MN is full of people searching for threads from people either asking genuinely when others think the restrictions may be reduced, or people expressing mental or emotional.distress due to being locked away, sometimes alone. The pattern is the OP posts, there are a couple of sympathetic/in the case of lockdown speculation dovish opinions then the Depressor swoops, usually with a formulation along the lines of:
If you think these restrictions will be lifted anytime soon you are a naïve fool. Christmas will be cancelled and things will never fully return to normal

In the threads expressing mental distress their standard formulation is a variety of:
FFS pull yourselves together. It's been (insert number) weeks, how the F do you think people coped in the war the. All you are being asked to do is stay in and watch Netflix

There seems to be a remarkably large number of people among this cohort who claim grandparental involvement in WW1/2 and have a partner/sibling serving as a front line NHS worker. These depressors seem to scour MN looking to pounce on people expressing povs like the above.

@oldqueen1969, @ freezing milk in ice cube trays is no where near as balmy as the one that suggested grated cheese in tea/coffee as it's made from milk Grin

Sorry about your Mum it's hard at the best of times so look after yourself

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 01/05/2020 14:18

@oldqueen1969

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers

I'm glad this thread has given you some light relief

OldQueen1969 · 01/05/2020 14:22

@TeacupDrama

Grated cheese in tea and coffee ?????? I just can't even..... nope no words! Boggling!!!

Thanks for the kind words both PPs xxx

Springersrock · 01/05/2020 14:33

Grated cheese in tea and coffee?????

WTF? Envy not envy

Where do people get their ideas from!?

sonjadog · 01/05/2020 14:34

My favourite was the poster who berated the OP for going to the shop for milk, as milk is non-essential - apparently the OP could just use water on her breakfast cereal instead.

Springersrock · 01/05/2020 14:34

@OldQueen1969 Flowers sorry about your mum ☹️

IcedPurple · 01/05/2020 14:35

I think the grated cheese in coffee thing was a joke. Mind you, you'd never know given how daft some of the threads are these days.

Springersrock · 01/05/2020 14:35

My favourite was on Facebook.

Someone asking whether the local co-op had any bread in.

Someone replied “just make your own - simples”

“Simples” makes me want to commit murder at the best of times

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/05/2020 14:38

God, the food police. Don't you dare go to more than one shop when you're out on your food shop - you must make do with whatever is there!

Teateaandmoretea · 01/05/2020 14:39

I'm on the same thread. They really are out in force on that aren't they, and I saw the cruise ship description. There's also a post on a separate thread that wanted the cruise industry to go bust and described cruise ships as "floating council estates".

There are a lot of people who just like to look down on people who enjoy things they don’t. I’d never go on a cruise in a million years but I don’t mind a cheap Spanish seaside holiday. I enjoy other types of holiday too (Walking, not really into culture though) but some people just see everything as a competition. Just cos I don’t want to go on a cruise doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it.

TeacupDrama · 01/05/2020 15:01

well last time I was food shopping I went to Lidl Farmfoods and Waitrose all on the same day for different things; not only will it drive them demented it will confuse them socially too

maybe the grated cheese was a half joke! but it was on the thread that milk and bread were not essential items

PotholeParadise · 01/05/2020 15:01

There's also a post on a separate thread that wanted the cruise industry to go bust and described cruise ships as "floating council estates".

Huh? That sounds like one of my posts, and I have checked on AS and the only two threads where that phrase comes up is my post and this thread.

I did not say I wanted the cruise ship industry to go bust. I was actually defending them, if I was taking a position at all.

It was being claimed that cruise ships were more environmentally unfriendly than all other forms of transport and I was trying to clarify whether these stats took into account that cruise ship emissions include everything that people do. Don't think I ever got an answer either. I still want to know whether, once everything is added, from good to sewage processing, if 1000 passengers on a cruise ship genuinely produce more emissions than 1000 people on a council estate*.

*You can use 'housing estate' if you prefer, although as a sometime council tenant, I don't see the phrase 'council estate' as a source of shame or judgement.

PotholeParadise · 01/05/2020 15:08

Me, exactly a month ago:

I've not seen the figures for the environmental impact of cruises, but they're basically floating council estates. If you consider the environmental impact of 5000 people on an estate leading their lives for 2 months, it's really not good. Is the impact of a cruise ship actually due to the mode of transport itself?

You're entitled to disagree with me, but please don't decide for me what my opinion is on cruise ships, because I don't know it yet!

Orangeblossom78 · 01/05/2020 15:17

I totally agree it's all about people's own choices and situations . Everyone has to make choices for themselves there's no one thing fits all. Very difficult perhaps at times. You'd think it was obvious.

MinesaPinot · 01/05/2020 15:19

And similarly I fail to see how the phrase they're basically floating council estates can be considered to be anything other than derogatory whether you're wishing to ascertain figures or not.

thesuninsagittarius · 01/05/2020 15:22

I'm loving this thread. It's given me hope when I was beginning to despair. I'm a middle aged divorced woman on universal credit, so I'm definitely among the lower orders. My children are grown up and I live in a tiny flat with no garden so I can't outrage anyone with a trampoline or a chavvy sex pond. However I'm doing my bit by spending frivolously on Amazon etc.
Thanks to some wonderful posts on this thread I'm now able to ignore the dementors. I think a dementor is what happens when you get a very stupid person with no life, no occupations and no imagination. I can't believe how many people are so invested in what others are doing/not doing.
Thank you all for some sanity, rationality and a bloody good laugh. (How many people will die if I buy that new foundation I've had my eye on?...)

trappedsincesundaymorn · 01/05/2020 15:29

I've just bought some wine, a case of beer for OH (we should have been at a mini festival tomorrow so we're having our own), some galaxy truffles and some hair dye (I'm starting to look like a cherry ripple ice-cream), so take that dementors, because I've just killed half the known world.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/05/2020 15:36

McDonald's has announced the reopening of some stores for drive thru. The Dementors will have a field day.

PotholeParadise · 01/05/2020 15:42

And similarly I fail to see how the phrasethey're basically floating council estatescan be considered to be anything other than derogatory whether you're wishing to ascertain figures or not.

Yes, well, we all have different cultural values. I do try to remember most of the time that I am.posting on a middle-class dominated site and to choose language accordingly, but when I am typing quickly, I don't.

Sadly, I don't actually have a social media manager to remind me that many MNers subscribe to snobbery that I don't (I was conceived in the tallest tower block my town has Grin)

I rather like language and playing with how words that mean the same have totally different connotations so on another day, I would probably have subbed 'housing estate' or resort in the same place. Doesn't mean I want to destroy the cruise ship industry though.

Incidentally, just below my post on that thread, someone called cruise ships floating prisons. But heaven forfend someone mention council estates. Grin

Orangeblossom78 · 01/05/2020 15:43

I think the dementors can make you feel guilt even if you've done nothing wrong, a bit like that feeling when you approach customs and feel guilty just for being there!

Just remember, those scared to go out cos of them, anyone else out there is basically doing the same as you. We do all need to try and live with this situation I guess. It can really help to have some fresh air and some headphones can help with music and drown out any worries about dementors.

Orangeblossom78 · 01/05/2020 15:45

I always thought cruises were expensive and things taken by the elderly / rich...anyway! Maybe it is possible to move on from the cruise ship stuff?

MinesaPinot · 01/05/2020 15:50

PotholeParadise However you dress it up the phrase did sound derogatory, but I'll try and remind myself about my middle class snobbery when I'm eventually allowed to go and see my mum who still lives in the same council house on the same council estate where I was brought up.

PotholeParadise · 01/05/2020 15:52

I'm only moving on if someone buys me a cruise ship ticket to do it in!

I'm happy to admit that it was an unwise language choice and I should have seen this misunderstanding coming. I really should have done, to be perfectly honest.

I just think someone should buy me dinner first before they sign me up to the Ban Cruise Ships Campaign. Shock

Teateaandmoretea · 01/05/2020 15:52

Yes let’s not let our lovely thread degenerate into an argument about cruise ships and council estates. We’ve all written stuff on mumsnet that people have taken out of context. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️.

MinesaPinot · 01/05/2020 15:54

I'm moving on, on a cruise ship when they start sailing again.....Smile
