Aggressive man in cinema

Just went to the pictures with my kids. It was a "sit anywhere" screening so we sat in the best seats which you can pay more for - usually nobody pays extra and anyone sits there, especially in a not busy screening like it was today.

A man & 2 boys said we were in his seats (at the end of the row) so we were moving down (the rest of the row was empty anyway - we ended up in the middle in better seats). As he went past while I was still sitting - but it was clear we were moving as my kids had already stood up, I was just gathering stuff - he hit me in my knees with his knees several times on purpose! My son saw him do it too. It actually hurt quite a bit, i have bad knees. It wasn't an accident.

AIBU to think that was unnecessary?! I accept it is wrong to sit in the premier seats, except the cinema don't care and we moved when he said we were in his seats.

This is assault! What a fucking weasel this chap is, to do something like that and disguise it as an accident.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but I think you should report it. I hate folk like him getting away with stuff like that.

YANBU.

Nasty

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 17/02/2020 14:03

Don’t waste any more thought on it. Of course he was wrong. Forget about it and move on. Hope you enjoyed the film.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 17/02/2020 14:12

Of course they were his seats if he paid extra for them. Just because the OP didn’t pay extra does mean he also didn’t.

toast1123 · 17/02/2020 14:15

Even if they were his assigned seats, absolutely no need to be so horrible. Some people are just full of anger and like to take it out on strangers.

MickCarter · 17/02/2020 14:17

I feel like the majority of people are arseholes, I’m sorry you encountered one who hurt you physically, especially somewhere you already have pain.

damnthatanxiety · 17/02/2020 14:30

How do you hit knees with knees? Was he sort of bobbing up and down or side swiping you with his knees? Not being funny, I just wanted to know to see if it sounded intentional.

missyB1 · 17/02/2020 14:37

Sounds like he was being passive aggressive, pretending to be just getting past you but taking an opportunity to hurt you. What an absolute twat. I hate people like that.

ChazP · 17/02/2020 14:40

I’m confused - if the seats were at the end of the row, and you were moving more into the middle, why was he coming past you?

Also don’t understand how on the one hand it was a sit anywhere screening, but on the other hand he had reserved seats..?

No excuse for any form of physical force, but if I’d paid extra for premium seats and someone else just decided to sit there, I’d be irritated.

TaniaArse · 17/02/2020 14:41

Your post doesn't make sense.

crazycatgal · 17/02/2020 14:42

It sounds like an odeon where you can sit anywhere unless you have paid for the premier seats, where you will then be assigned a seat.

WorraLiberty · 17/02/2020 14:44

I’m confused - if the seats were at the end of the row, and you were moving more into the middle, why was he coming past you?

That's what I'm confused about and the repeated clashing of knees, as I wouldn't have thought they'd clash if one adult was sat down and one was standing up.

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 14:44

You said you were moving so how can he have gone past you while you were still sitting? He wanted to sit where you were so had no need to move past you.

whiskeylullaby2 · 17/02/2020 14:46

How did he hit you intentionally with his knees repeatedly. I honestly cant work out the logistics here?

Also why did you not at the time say
'Oi, please be patient'
'Your knees are hurting my knees'
or something to that effect?

WorraLiberty · 17/02/2020 14:46

Regarding the expensive seats, in my local cinemas the staff ask you to sit somewhere else if you haven't paid extra.

They don't do 'sit anywhere screenings'. People just try it on more (including myself) if the place is half empty.

Most of us wait until the film is a good 15/20 minutes in though and if the seats are still empty, we'll use them.

KurriKurri · 17/02/2020 14:47

Well he sounds like total tit for bashing your knees - who the hell does that ?

But I'm also a bit confused - is it a 'sit anywhere except the premier seats, if you want to sit in those you have to pay for specified seats'? or is it 'sit anywhere you like' ? because if it is the former and you jst thought you'd sit in the expensive seats because they were empty at that point and it wasn't busy, then I can see he might be a bit irritated at having to evict someone from the seats he'd paid for (and be a bit pissed off that he'd paid extra when he probably didn't really need to as it wasn't busy) Not annoyd enough to bash you though - no excuse for that, but annoyed as in 'I think I'll tell the cinema manager this is a stupid system'.

Bringbackthebill · 17/02/2020 14:48

So what did he say when you told him to stop hitting you?

FloraGreysteel · 17/02/2020 14:55

He jostled you because he was annoyed that you were sitting in his seats. You're both being unreasonable: him for being a passive-aggressive arse and you for sitting in seats you hadn't paid for and getting settled.

If you're going to sit in premier price seats when you haven't paid for them, at least wait until the moment the adverts stop and the film is about to start before you occupy them, and be prepared to leap out of them if the people who paid for them turn up.

And how do you know he didn't have dodgy knees which is why he wanted to sit at the end of the row?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/02/2020 14:59

Fuckin nasty pathetic little "man". I guarantee hed have been a lot more affable if you'd have been a 6 ft tall bloke or if your partner had been with you.
Did the seats have his name on.

WorraLiberty · 17/02/2020 15:05

Did the seats have his name on.

Whilst I don't disagree with the rest of your post, the seats would have the number on that matched the number on his ticket that he payed extra for.

10FrozenFingers · 17/02/2020 15:08

Of course he shouldn't have knocked your knees but you we CFs for sitting in the expensive seats without paying. I'd have been pissed off if I'd paid and free loaders were in my seats.

Goandplay · 17/02/2020 15:09

Why is everyone so angry all the time. He said they were his seats, you moved I can't understand why he was such a tosser. With his children watching too!
I hope you and your children are ok.

dustibooks · 17/02/2020 15:11

This wasn't in Stevenage by any chance, was it? I had a similar thing happen to me on a train once, and he got out at Stevenage station. He was a nasty bastard.

Goandplay · 17/02/2020 15:12

Why would you be pissed off if someone was 'freeloading'? I'd ask them to move and not give it another thought. I have been in the pictures and seen a couple sneak in - obviously not paying anything. Another occasion 2 teenagers has obviously sneaked one in, one had a seat and the other was on the floor. I couldn't care less as long as I have my seat and they aren't spoiling it for anyone else.

I honestly have too many things to be concerned or piss off about to be adding this to my list.
