Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:

Just before your thread hit 1000 I was trying to post that the experts last week were predicting circa 500,000 UK deaths based on projections and so the imperial college numbers are very much in line with that.

Haven't read the previous threads but where I work (call centre) we now have staff on a Corona virus helpline. This was announced internally 10 days ago so must have been decided upon by Public Health England at leat a week before that.

We are now working urgently to identify all patients and other healthcare workers who may have come into close contact, and at this stage we believe this to be a relatively small number.

How can they believe it's a relatively small number? Doctors interact with many people each day, patients and staff. They could also spread the virus through interactions with their environment, and may also travel via public transport. In one day their interactions with the environment and others could directly impact 100s of others.

Then if they have family members, these people could potentially contagious, even if they aren't showing symptoms. If each family member goes about their daily lives, they could also be exposing others to the virus.

Sounds very scary. Who predicted that?

I appreciate they didn't teat any patients, however The GP would still have been in contact with staff and patients throughout the day. As well the potentially passing on the virus through their interactions with the environment.

Those stats are worrying though.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist at all but why didn’t the UK government stop flights from China when this first broke out? It hasn’t seemed like they’ve been very on the ball about this since the first cases were declared. Apparently there are STILL daily flights coming from China despite growing cases here. It all seems so half hearted. It almost seems like if they wanted it to spread around the country and take a huge percentage of people out, this is how they’d do it.
Oh no screening at airports either!

I live not far from Brighton and felt rotten with a cough and sore throat for about 10 days recently. I’ve only ever had a chesty cough once before as a teen.

At my daughter’s primary school they have had a lot of kids off with temps, cough and sore throat.

A very health conscious colleague had bad flu the first week in Jan after visiting France.

So many of my family, friends and colleagues have been ill lately with similar symptoms.

I wonder if it’s already been in the UK for a few weeks?

I think it's probably been here for a while.

I just read that the infection rate has reduced by 20% which could suggest China have managed to contain it to an extent.

Hopefully more people will start with good hygiene practices and starting washing hands etc

I think the reason the cases dropped in China is only because the Chinese health commission have changed their definition of a confirmed case (basically removed the numbers who have it but no symptoms) so those figures mean nothing.
I am quite honestly terrified. I don’t believe anything coming out of China, am worried that there has been free flow of infected people for too long and the virus is not going to be contained in the uk.

I wonder if any of you who have been reading up on this can help me as I am just off to work but promised I'd try to help my friend. Friend spent Christmas and New Year in China, left early Jan, travelled through Philippines to Bali and next Vietnam. Probably coming home after Vietnam. He can't find any info re people who left China early Jan also has intermittent wi-fi so struggling to do research hence my waking up to a request for help, i can't find the answer on a quick search and I am going to struggle to do much more today due to heavy day at work including evening commitment. Question is basically whether he will be quarantined even if he left China in early Jan as he has work commitment s so if likely to be quarantined needs to leave a couple of weeks earlier. Any help truly appreciated - based on facts please rather than assumptions (sorry if that sounds rude, not intended to be ! )

I'm also not convinced about China numbers. Why are they hosing down the streets? What is that about if it is spread by droplets.

Regarding the Brighton doctor, is the other healthcare professional affected part of his family or from his surgery?

I work in GP surgeries and they are not hygienic like hospitals 😷

At the moment he should be ok to return. If he's been to hubei/wuhan he would be quarantined (depending on the timing of when he returns). If he hasn't and he has symptoms (even just a cough) he'll be asked to self isolate for 14 days. If he hasn't and he has no symptoms then currently he wouldn't be asked to isolate.

I suspect however that this advice will change as the virus takes hold and we may well find that anyone returning from that area of the world is asked to self isolate.

Fucking hell, those stats are shocking. Exactly what I was worried about, have been reading everything since the first news from China. I believe it was only recorded as 300ish in China at the point I started watching.

How much info do we have on people having mild cases and recovering? The thing that worries me is we hear reports on coronovirus cases, then all goes quiet. No update on their condition improving. I would be reassured if someone was interviewed saying “yes I had it and it was relatively mild for me”. There are so many cases in China which appear to be still infected. Only a small percentage are recovered or dead. What is happening with all the others ? Is it much worse than we are being told?

Remember swine flu anyone? Hardly anything happened after dire predictions. Just keep washing your hands thoroughly and stay away from sick people.
