Here is the old thread:

Here is a twitter video from Wuhan I want to share because it so heartbreaking. People happily celebrating shortly before it became known that there was a virus outbreak. There already were some rumors but people didn’t believe them:
twitter.com/WLaowai8/status/1225637845508837377

@Yourtunbridgewells: The info you are sharing (472000 deaths in the UK) is very scary. Is this a worst case scenario.

@justdeckingthehalls: Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding writes that it is airborne on twitter: twitter.com/DrEricDing/status/1226236552059260928
N95 masks help against airborne transmission don’t they?

It isn't a case of either the NHS covers you, or you can't have it, is it, though?

Chemists across the country will inject you with the current winter flu vaccination for about £12. How many people take them up on it?

BTW, Boots also offers a (bacterial) "Pneumonia Jab" for £70. Won't help you against viral pneumonia after catching a virus, but presumably could help against a bacterial infection that would otherwise develop after catching the flu. (#NotADoctor)

Pootlepootlepootle · 11/02/2020 13:20

‘I don’t have a will. I am 31. Feels so morbid..’
Make a will. The only guarantee in life is you will die and if you have kids then you need to think about them. Who’ll look after them, would they be willing too, are the the best option? Your kids will have money, your house or may be insurance money ( if you don’t have life insurance then get some now) so that needs to be held in trust for them, and managed by whoever has them for the benefit of your children. That’s a consideration. My mate got ripped off by her own grandmother/uncle although they wouldn’t have seen it that way... but regardless by the time she was 21 and entitled to inherit on her own the money was all gone...

PotholeParadise · 11/02/2020 13:25

FWIW if my children were black/Asian and a disease had the potential to harm them but had only been found to affect white people, I’d feel the same.

Yes, I'm sure you would.

I am afraid that it doesn't matter what your race is, choosing to hope that only children of your race don't catch it, as opposed to hoping that it spreads no further and no-one else catches it, makes you sound like a terrible person.

If you cannot cope with the idea that saying horrible things makes people think you sound horrible, stop talking. Otherwise, think about what you say and whether it sounds callous and as if you don't dare if millions of other people die.

potatochipsandcheese · 11/02/2020 13:27

I’m not sure that being hopeful a killer virus is not going to affect my children makes me horrible.

I think it makes me quite normal.

If you see normal reactions to everything as racist, you must struggle.

potatochipsandcheese · 11/02/2020 13:28

And obviously I hope it spreads no further and no one else catches it. That’s not looking likely though

PotholeParadise · 11/02/2020 13:30

I haven't called you racist.

Whoopsmahoot · 11/02/2020 13:35

Calm down people! There is FAR too much scare mongering going on. Yes, there will be MANY more people infected than the statistics suggest. Some people will have it thinking they only have a bad cold and make a full recovery. The main reason people have died have been due to a pre existing medical condition, in which a normal case of flu could have killed them , not just coronavirus. Also, 1 in 5 people will need mechanical help with breathing ( ventilators etc) and in poor areas there just haven't been enough to support everyone infected. This winter 10, 000 people have died from the flu in America - sounds horrendous but they have a population of 200, 000, 000. Is it stopping anyone travelling to America? No. We need to be alert but not headless chickens about it. Plenty hand washing, try not to touch door handles, stair bannisters and stay at home if you have cold symptoms.

Seriously stop digging potato and take on board what people are saying! If you don't like being called a racist, don't make comments people find racist. It was also extremely tasteless and insensitive.

I don't want to derail the thread even further so I won't say any more but I genuinely hope you will take the responses on board.

potatochipsandcheese · 11/02/2020 13:55

I really really don’t care if you call me racist.

I know you’re awfully upset by my ‘saying words’ but there’s a lot of other stuff to be talking about. Including how this affects us in the uk. The cruise ship will be an interesting demographic t follow

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 11/02/2020 14:14

potato my kids aren’t fully Caucasian. In fact they’re in the at risk group. My husband is very much in the at risk group. I completely understand your sentiment that you don’t want this to affect your kids, and I took it as you meaning “I hope it doesn’t come to this country and affect children here”. Just don’t forget that in this country not everyone is white, some will be more at risk than others, so it was a bit like the people who say “I hope it only kills the immunocompromised!” A touch heartless. We ALL pray that it doesn’t affect our or anyone else’s kids, regardless of race.

IvyBush123 · 11/02/2020 14:32

@Whoopsmahoot Dh and me wash our hands and taught our children to wash them... but our kids still pick up a lot of germs in school and day care... nothing to be worried about so far... but if the Coronavirus was in their school/day care I am sure that it would spread.

Some people do not care about basic hygiene at all. I had a guy cough and then spit right in front of me the other day. I wondered if I should tell him off,

OP posts:
IvyBush123 · 11/02/2020 14:39

BTW I think it is not true that no caucasian is in the risk group. If I got it right 40 percent of non Jewish whites and 19 percent of whites of Jewish ancestry have a high number of ACE2 receptors and are in the risk group. Being Caucasian makes you less likely to be in the risk group but still there are a lot of whites in the risk group.

This.

IvyBush123 · 11/02/2020 14:40

Sorry I thinking was 10 percent of those of Jewish ancestry. Typo.

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 14:44

It’s quite reassuring that despite the so called super spreader (awful terminology) having been all over the place, we still haven’t seen numbers sky rocket here.

We had 2 people in York affected and no reports of anyone else at the university or hotel catching it.

So far the reports of the illness from the Brighton people are mild symptoms and recovering well.

All I can hope is that somehow, it’s not as bad as it looked like it could be 3 weeks ago

IvyBush123 · 11/02/2020 14:47

I wonder if it is possible it already mutated and those people caught a mild version of the illness. Would it be possible to make a vaccination from that version then?

Or is it possible that they will be very ill in two r three weeks? How long does it take from diagnosis to death (for those who die)?

OP posts:
ofwarren · 11/02/2020 14:48

Have you got more info in the Jewish ACE2 receptors link at all? My husband is half Jewish, and smokes.

PotholeParadise · 11/02/2020 14:48

On that note the nursery near the French chalet is reopening today, now that all the test results are back. The schools are staying closed for another week.

In Germany, the first people are leaving quarantine, having not developed it, so looks like that outbreak has been caught in its tracks. And a Germany university thinks the virus survives up to 9 days on surfaces, and has detailed how to kill it.

www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0195670120300463#

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 14:49

Some reports were saying 3 weeks for the most severe cases leading to death

IvyBush123 · 11/02/2020 14:51

@ofwarren It was somewhere on twitter. Try searching for ACE2 and Coronavirus. They have tables which population has the most and which have the least ACE2 receptors there

OP posts:
MrsBethel · 11/02/2020 14:56

I think numbers will rocket here.

If you suppose there are 'x' people in the UK at this moment with the virus, how many of those would we expect to have identified?

There are a few remarkable things about this ski-chalet man:

  1. the conference organisers knew to try to contact attendees,
  2. they managed to get in touch with him,
  3. he presented himself for testing,
  4. the test result was correct. The planets have all aligned and they found him. I bet there are hundreds of others where that hasn't all worked out. What about all the people who catch it somewhere other than at an organised event with an attendee list with contact details?

It's a relatively mild virus for most people, so I bet there are loads of people out there with it right now. We just don't know about them.

IvyBush123 · 11/02/2020 15:03

@ofwarren I didn’t find the table I was talking about again.

But here is another table I found on twitter: twitter.com/alternativebeta/status/1223096577960529920

Unfortunately it does not list European Jews but shows how whites are less prone to it than Asians. It lists people from Kuwait, Lebanon and United Arab Emirates as those least likely to have those genes (only 7%, 2% and 6%).

news.sky.com/story/two-uk-prisoners-being-tested-for-coronavirus-11931564 2 prisoners in UK being tested

justdeckingthehalls1 · 11/02/2020 15:27

I imagine being a prisoner makes contact tracing fairly easy at least!
