The only Black/mixed race member of the royal family has been bullied and insulted to the point that she's made the decision to step back.

Funny isn't it @PicsInRed how posters always have a black or biracial DH/colleague/neighbour who says they've never experienced racism and ergo there's no such thing?

GoodbyeRosie · 11/01/2020 07:45

"His Tanned Skin"

I think we have reached peak Mumsnet.

TwilightPeace · 11/01/2020 07:49

Tremendously disappointed in her. And also in Harry. Compares very badly with the devotion to duty that other members of the Royal Family have shown

Disappointed in them? Are they not free human beings who can choose to live as they please? They don’t owe you anything!

And yy to all the white women on here saying that racism doesn’t exist 🙄 course it doesn’t.

Cremebrule · 11/01/2020 07:49

I don’t doubt there has been an element of racism and some of the coverage has been unfair. However, they have bought some of it on themselves by ill advised statements and some bratty behaviour. I don’t think anyone would have begrudged them a quieter life in Canada if they’d handled it properly but that isn’t what they appear to want.

Catsandchardonnay · 11/01/2020 07:52

Racists won the day of the Brexit vote imo. This is a horrible racist country now, full of hate.

historyismything · 11/01/2020 08:02

You can't deny that some of the criticism has been racist. however, I don't know how anyone can defend someone who visited one of the poorest locations on earth; where women had been raped and infected with aids and faced not seeing there children grow, to giving an interview saying they were surviving not thriving?

Or what about the hypocrisy when she attended Wimbledon? The don't look at me but look I don't want the poor folk near me?

They were supposedly on a six week break but they managed to keep themselves relevant throughout that time. No one knew where they were so why on earth go and thank the Canadian embassy?

SamanthaBrique · 11/01/2020 08:07

The Wimbledon thing is a classic example of a tabloid story becoming fact @historyismything. There weren't people around her because she was sat in the members area where members of the public aren't allowed anyway. So it's natural for it to be less crowded than the general seating. It wasn't that she ordered a clear area around her.

historyismything · 11/01/2020 08:13

Ok so I am wrong about Wimbledon, fair enough. Please defend her and the interview in the African townships?

SamanthaBrique · 11/01/2020 08:21

I wasn't going to. she should've thought twice about that. But it was two minutes out of a programme that mainly focused on the work they were doing in the course of their trip and it was in response to the interviewer's question. The press just chose to focus on those two minutes instead of the rest of the documentary.

YABU
I don't think it's racism that has persuaded H&M to bugger off. It's definitely there but I disagree that's why they have made this move.
I think that the royal family is having to modernise. It always has and this is just the latest manifestation of that. The younger royals want to do things differently and Harry is in a good position to actually break free as he is not required as a spare anymore.
His marriage to someone so very much outside of the British system has given him an added input from a fresh perspective. Alright they both spout a bit of right on twaddle at times but I'm interested to see how they progress.

SamanthaBrique · 11/01/2020 09:19

@joyfullittlehippo it's interesting to track how mistruths become "facts". Just yesterday I saw someone on another thread claiming the new Sussex website says Ireland is part of the Commonwealth. Cue lots of derision from other posters who didn't bother even checking to see if that's true.

What the website actually does is list Ireland under the tours the Sussexes have done to the Commonwealth "and beyond". Now you'd have to either be lacking in comprehension skills or malicious to read that and think they meant Ireland was in the Commonwealth!

....
She answered a couple of questions truthfully, it only took a few minutes and the rest of the documentary was about the African townships. I thought it was a very good documentary.

As for dragging up that Wimbledon nonsense - honestly, that is barrel scraping.

It strikes me that people latch on to small things and exaggerate them because they want to find fault.

The Daily Mail is particularly good at hyperbole and is quite vicious.

I have no bias and no axe to grind in respect of this couple. They've always seemed OK to me and it is beyond me why the media turned against them though it's not the first time it has happened.

Yesterday I watched Thursday night's Question Time on iplayer and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were the topic of the first part of the programme. The panel included Max Hasting and Clive Lewis. I felt the questions and answers were very balanced and recommend anyone who is invested in this story to watch it.

The royal family are probably more racist than anyone on here (including Harry.....regardless of his marriage) Prince Philip being the outspoken one. .Disgusting.

noodlenosefraggle · 11/01/2020 22:46

Is Ireland not in the Commonwealth? Isn't the commonwealth former British Empire?

FromEden · 11/01/2020 23:04

Ireland isnt in the commonwealth

NewYearsRevolution2020 · 11/01/2020 23:49

@noodlenosefraggle

Stay away from craicnet, noodles

noodlenosefraggle · 12/01/2020 08:48

Oops! I will! DH has a newly acquired Irish passport. I'd better do some reading in case the shit hits the fan and we have to go there Grin

MiniCooperLover · 12/01/2020 18:40

The Vinyl Detective by Andrew Cartmel. There's 3 or 4 in the series now and both me and DH love them. He bought me the newest one for Xmas and was desperate for me to finish it so he could start it 😊

NewYearsRevolution2020 · 12/01/2020 20:14

@noodlenosefraggle. Smile

Although, you could ask them for some starter points on Irish history that aren’t too academic.

Think they would be really helpful to a genuine query.
