The only Black/mixed race member of the royal family has been bullied and insulted to the point that she's made the decision to step back.

OP posts:
stepitupjuan · 10/01/2020 16:27

I agree Meghan has been subject to vile racist abuse. I do not believe that's why she'd stepped back. The plan to monetise their titles and position was there all along.

milveycrohn · 10/01/2020 16:30

There were snide comments about Kate in the past and her parents.
I had to look up 'doors to manual' that apparently was used about Kate's mother (who used to work as air cabin crew).
I always defended MM until 3 days ago. I did not like the deception over their move to North America/Canada or wherever they eventually decide on.
The Press I read has generally been quite nice to her until this latest, so I have not seen all the negative comments, but I suspect a lot of it comes from trolls ob the internet, and probably the same ones.

Noviceoftheweek · 10/01/2020 16:32

As a professional black woman, I empathise with her. I know what racism is and have encountered it many times. It can insidious, subtle or overt but it always hurts.

VladmirsPoutine · 10/01/2020 16:34

What the hell is wrong with everybody. Leave Meghan alone!

Do you think that she will leave everyone else alone?
Or do you think that she/they will use the Sussex brand to preach and decry anything that they/she wants to whilst hypocritically do what she/they please.

I would be more than happy for these two to go off in to the sunset and live happily ever after, yet IMHO I think that they will be the usual celebrity megaphone of 'Do as I say, not as I do'.

katiegoestoaldi · 10/01/2020 17:04

why would a multi millionaire who has already been on a world syndicated series and movies need money or to make a name for herself?

Because how long would her fame have lasted? How many people fade into obscurity once their show ends? She wasn't even a main character really. The millions she made during the show wouldn't last long once the show ended if she wanted to keep that lifestyle up. She was mid thirties, now late thirties. She'd be unemployable in the notoriously ageist Hollywood once she reached 40.

Now she will have unending fame and notoriety and the money to live the rest of her life in luxury. Jackpot!

bluemoon19 · 10/01/2020 17:10

Oh for goodness sake, as if she’s resigning because of racism.....She’s disliked along with her husband for a variety of reasons.. Why can’t people read between the lines. They’ve been forced out by the queen, before the monarchy gets even more unpopular. As if they’re going to tell us that.

I don't think it's about racism in her case. Yep, there are some really stupid twats our there. But my argument is, she grew up in America, she had a career before marriage... she didn't let racism stop her then, so why now?
I firmly believe it's to do with the Royal family as an institution... she isn't used to people telling her what to do and when to it.

and I really liked MM until a few days ago. I thought she is great for the royal family! As a strong woman and an actress that can use her skills and position to promote charities projects and other good causes. Making a real difference Instead of being a one hit fairy tale princess bride wonder. That in the end just didn't get the Prince after all

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 10/01/2020 17:59

Tremendously disappointed in her. And also in Harry. Compares very badly with the devotion to duty that other members of the Royal Family have shown (especially the Queen and Princess Anne). And the idea of cashing in on their title by using it to brand goods is trashy beyond description.

What about all those Buckingham or Kensington palace branded tea towels and mugs etc? Are they trashy too? The royal family have been monetising themselves for quite a while now!

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 10/01/2020 18:35

@CallaLilli - The inhabitants of Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace are at least continuing to carry out their royal duties!

CallaLilli · 10/01/2020 18:37

I thought the Sussex announcement said they'd still be carrying out royal duties?

colouringinpro · 11/01/2020 00:36

This.

theendoftheendoftheend · 11/01/2020 00:40

I think people have forgotten Kate got plenty of harsh press in the beginning, Waity Katey anyone?
I think Meghan has been both a little annoying and also had unfairly bad press, unfortunately also from family and friends which I don't think Kate ever did? Personally I don't see a racist element in it, for example Piers Morgan I think is just pissed off she ghosted him.

NewYearsRevolution2020 · 11/01/2020 05:44

Danny Baker's tweet.

that's all I want to add.

lboogy · 11/01/2020 05:58

I love how white women who've never experienced racism feel that they can tell black women what racism is and isn't.

lboogy · 11/01/2020 06:06

The article from the daily telegraph ( a paper that has been a bell ringer and chief - supporter of Farage, Boris and Brexit) by SHERELLE JACOBS is an absolute joke. Using minorities to sell racism is the classic divide and conquer tactics of racist institutions.

coatlessinspokane · 11/01/2020 06:22

The ironic thing is, the people who are being called racist are actually judging her on her actions, her character and the effect she's had on the RF.

That’s not how it works with racism / sexism etc. People don’t usually come out with explicit racism. They are are often unaware of their racist bias themselves. But they judge a person’s action such more harshly than if they would a person of their own race.

NoineNoine · 11/01/2020 06:48

Basically I hate all the royals. Their wealth comes from years and years of exploiting their own people and colonisation. So by default I hate all the adults in the system. So I'm actually pretty pleased about this, it might just create enough of a stink to destroy this 'family', ha!

bumblingbovine49 · 11/01/2020 06:50

It is racism but it is also sexism. As an earlier poster said , every woman who has joined the royal family recently from outside the aristocracy has had this in some form ( Diana, Sarah Ferguson, Kate and now Megan).

Meghan is independent and less likely to want to do what Kate has done ( shut up and put up) so she will be even more harshly punished for this

Harry knows this as he was born into it but he is male, born into the family and has a lot of built in goodwill because of his mother's death so he has never experienced what his wife is . Becaue he loves her is trying to help but his lack of experience with this, means he doesn't know how to. I think he genuinely thinks all he has to do is appeal to people to stop and they will . All he is achieving is making it sound like they are complaining and it is making him more unpopular too and subject to claims that he is ' under the thumb' - Hmm

Meghan is being punished for being female and not aristocracy, she is being doubly punished for being older, independent and having some opinions. Being black adds another layer of vitrol from the racists . That means she is being punished three times as much not just twice.

I think both of them are really worried what this will mean for their child as he grows up and are trying to get out of this circus somehow. Good on them

SamanthaBrique · 11/01/2020 07:17

Agree @lboogy, that article is complete and utter nonsense. This part for example "Meritocracy runs in modern Britain’s marrows, because most of us fiercely believe that people should not be defined by their background." Um, has the author lived in a bubble all her life?

WestCountryLady · 11/01/2020 07:27

From my own experience I don't feel we are a nation of racists I spent 11 years married to a mixed race man who I knew from school and never did my exh ever experience any racism, he was popular, funny and bright and throughout school, work and in general his tanned skin never bothered anyone.
But take someone who isn't popular and it becomes something else to have a pop at, we aren't a nation of racists we're a nation of put other people down for whatever reason we can find because it makes us feel good about ourselves to put others beneath us.

I can't say I'm wild about the woman but it makes me wonder are people only racist to the ones they don't like with the exception of their mates who might be of mixed race or someone else who's alright.

PicsInRed · 11/01/2020 07:39

and in general his tanned skin never bothered anyone.

Uh huh. Hmm
