The only Black/mixed race member of the royal family has been bullied and insulted to the point that she's made the decision to step back.

OP posts:
AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/01/2020 19:35

*I think the difference with Kate is that she just kept her mouth shut and kept quiet and kind of endeared herself slowly over a long time.

There seems to be the expectation Erin the Sussexes that she would immediately be a National Treasure.*

This. Not that I think that this is how things should be, but it's how they are.

LochJessMonster · 08/01/2020 19:36

WTF does that mean!?

It means I don’t think ‘OMG a black woman in the royal family’ or ‘a white person wouldn’t have done that’ etc.
I think - she’s a typical American actress who think the world should do as she says and is now running away because people don’t love her like she thinks they should.

And that is why I dislike her. Nothing to do with the colour of her skin or her race.

wheresmymojo · 08/01/2020 19:37

Basically people think she shouldn't be allowed to express opinions and should just turn up to things and look pretty Hmm

PrettyPity · 08/01/2020 19:38

Meghan is black. Archie is black. The British Prince married a black divorced American woman. I know this definitely pissed off a lot of British white people.

StealthPolarBear · 08/01/2020 19:40

"I don’t even see her as black, she’s as American as they come."
What colour are Americans?

MiniCooperLover · 08/01/2020 19:41

I don't like the 'progressive new role' which clearly sounds (to me) a criticism of William & Kate. It does feel to me they make quite a few dogs at them despite knowing they can't as easily step aside. Harry has always come across a bit spoilt and this all seems a bit easy to give up but I haven't been subjected to whatever is happening to them in front and behind the cameras. I assume they won't want British paid protection then.

MrsBrentford · 08/01/2020 19:41

Totally - and if you marry into the Royal Family you really should expect this, esp when you marry the 2nd in lines brother and Diana’s son!

I also think it’s sad for William actually as Harry has been brought up to be his friend and confidante and to support him in his role.

Obvs we don’t know what’s gone on.

CharlottesPleb · 08/01/2020 19:43

*I think a lot of it is to do with her being female and having an opinion.

Kate gets away with it because she keeps her mouth shut, doesn't express any opinions, etc.*

Not just female. Royals are paid handsomely to shut up and let people look up to them. It doesn't to to have an outspoken opinion because you limit the number of people who can assume you are gracious and noble.

To that end a Royal is far, far better off spending their time being charitable if they have concerns and want to speak on them, than expressing committed opinions on contentious issues. It makes their job easier because as soon as you commit to one side of an issue you step down from the pedestal for some people. The pedestal is what your job is.

Her Majesty gets that this her job. Princess Kate gets it. Meghan is young and has fire in her belly but will absolutely get there in my opinion. For now she doesn't do well at it which limits her pedestal power. Even Princess Diana for all the scandal, was all heart and few political positions.

Charles doesn't get it, which is why people dislike him.

Somethings gone on behind the scenes. Harry and William were close. Harry seemed to get on very well with Kate and was close with her too. Now they seem estranged from each other totally.

What colour are Americans? I don’t care. It makes no difference how I see or treat them. I judge on actions and character and I don’t like hers.

AppropriateAdult · 08/01/2020 19:47

Her race is certainly an issue for some segments of the media, but I don’t think she does code as black for most white British people, to be honest. Anti-American sentiment, though, is very pervasive in the UK.

There seems to be the expectation Erin the Sussexes that she would immediately be a National Treasure.

Based on what, out of interest? There have been an awful lot of words put in her mouth, with very little evidence for most of it. Like people complaining about Harry ‘lecturing us on how many children to have’, when that isn’t even remotely what happened Hmm

noodlenosefraggle · 08/01/2020 19:48

They weren't sex workers! They were victims of an abuser who threatened to destroy them and their careers if they didnt sleep with him! Are you calling victims of Harvey Weinstein sex workers?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 08/01/2020 19:48

I think it's much more likely to do with the fact that they want to live a 'normal' life.

Harry would never have stepped back if he had a chance of becoming King, which he now doesn't.

She's an actress and they both do a lot of charity work too.

I'd assume they both are finding royal life to suffocating and would rather live their lives for them.

I think it's admirable and I don't think they've been bullied into making that decision.

Lifeisabeach09 · 08/01/2020 19:49

It's interesting that people keep referring to Meghan as black. She's as much white as she is black, yet the focus is only on half her ethnicity.

Good luck to them both.

MrsBrentford · 08/01/2020 19:50

If you marry into the Royal Family basically yes.

Don’t preach, don’t be political, just smile and let people be in awe of your Royalness.

Then go home and create a MN account and argue with strangers on the internet 😂

LakieLady · 08/01/2020 19:50

I don’t think it’s to do with race. Look what they did to Diana. It was unprecedented what the press did to her and which ultimately caused her death.

What caused her death was getting into a car driven by someone who was pissed as a fart and not wearing a seatbelt. No sober driver would have had that crash. He was doing twice the speed limit while twice over the alcohol limit.

All her injuries were to her chest, and would not have been anywhere near so severe had she been wearing her seat belt.

veinticinco · 08/01/2020 19:51

Honestly, on MN at least, I think that xenophobia has always had more of a part to play than racism. I've, very unfortunately, used Americanisms in a post before and was derided for it, to give an example. The disproportionately harsh criticism Meghan has received is just another manifestation of that IMO.

MiniCooperLover · 08/01/2020 19:53

This will just make paparazzi follow them all the more ... American paps are horrendous and I assume can travel into Canada quite easily

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 08/01/2020 19:53

People don't like her not because of her colour but because she's an entitled little princess (literally) oh and because she's American.

I still prefer her to Kate though 🤷‍♀️
