A "friend" (male) has just shared a meme on Facebook.
AIBU to say something to him? If so, what?
I'm a significantly overweight woman. I find it demeaning and must surely now assume he thinks stuff like this about me.

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 01/01/2020 09:55

Report his Meme as offensive and have a word with him what an arsehole he is.

Ginfordinner · 01/01/2020 09:56

It's in pretty poor taste

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/01/2020 09:57

That’s horrible.

ShippingNews · 01/01/2020 09:57

I also received this meme from a couple of people today. I'm also an overweight person and I found it really offensive. It's the kind of throw-away fat shaming which people just laugh at , share, and then say " Oh but I didn't mean anything by it ". I don't think there is much that you or I can do about it, but I do agree that it is demeaning.

SyntheticPumpkin · 01/01/2020 09:58

I’m significantly overweight and thought it was funny. Just a different sense of humour, isn’t it?

misspiggy19 · 01/01/2020 09:58

I thought it was funny too.

tiredsleepysleep · 01/01/2020 09:59

YABU. It's a joke meme the woman is massive on a tiny stole that looks not suitable for her weight. How is that offensive?
I say this a significantly overweight person myself.... it's not offensive. I sometimes don't sit on small chairs because I'm worried I'll look a fool if they break. I assume if you're big you do the same.

You're choosing to be offended because you're insecure with your self due to your weight.

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2020 09:59

You can report it toFb no it probably won't do much good but it does mean the op willsee less of this nonsense.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 01/01/2020 10:00

It's a horrible photo but if you say anything you need to be prepared for a lack of sympathy and jokes going your way. Can you handle it? I dont think you can. Your best bet is to delete and not have friends for the sake of numbers on facebook!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 01/01/2020 10:00

I’m significantly overweight and thought it was funny

Same Synthetic

Craftycorvid · 01/01/2020 10:00

Ew, not in great taste, I agree. Could you message him and tell him? I know men who see nothing wrong with loud confident assertions about their limits on dress size and weight for potential partners and it makes me Angry.

Yetanotherwinter · 01/01/2020 10:03

Pretty soon we’ll be so offended by everything it won’t be safe to open our eyes in the morning.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 01/01/2020 10:03

It's fat shaming imho. Nothing funny about it.

NearlyGranny · 01/01/2020 10:04

The offence is in the fact that the woman was almost certainly unaware that the photo was being taken and was unlikely to have given her consent to its use.

It's in poor taste and perhaps the best response is to wish the sender better taste and more originality in 2020.

FeigningHorror · 01/01/2020 10:06

Yes, taking surreptitious photographs of unaware women minding their own business in public and using them to make casually fat-shaming memes is hilarious. Hmm

Whycantibetangy · 01/01/2020 10:07

Meh! I’m a right fatty and think its funny, but then I don’t give a monkeys about what anyone thinks of me.

If you find it offensive, scroll on by, message to tell him, remove from your friends list or do as I probs would and reply with a PA ‘cheers mate...diet starts today’

CFlemingSmith · 01/01/2020 10:07

I think it’s fine.
But then I am of the opinion that being overweight is unhealthy and should not be all about ‘body positivity’ etc because it simply isn’t good to be overweight

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 01/01/2020 10:09

The joke isn't that she is fat. The joke is that in comparison to her size, the stool looks fragile.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/01/2020 10:11

I can see why you’re upset but what do you hope will happen if you say something?

Possibilities:

Oh come on, it’s just a joke
You’re not as big as her, don’t take it personally
Sorry if you were offended (a non apology)
An offer to remove the post (it’s done now, not sure this would help?)

You’re not going to feel better whatever he says and you could end up feeling much worse.

lljkk · 01/01/2020 10:12

I wouldn't share it, but It makes me laugh. You can report me to the thought police too.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 01/01/2020 10:14

I thought it was rather funny.
I may print it out and stick it on the fridge.

I'm very overweight BTW.

pictish · 01/01/2020 10:17

It’s not so much that it’s offensive, although it is, it’s more that it’s so basic and lacking in wit and finesse. It’s humour for thickies.
It’s pants.

PhilSwagielka · 01/01/2020 10:20

Tell him you'll sit on him and crush him into the ground.

@Yetanotherwinter I KNEW someone was going to say something like this.

onanothertrain · 01/01/2020 10:22

I think it's funny. The joke is about the stool not the size of the woman.
