To think this is offensive and makes me sad?

A "friend" (male) has just shared a meme on Facebook.
AIBU to say something to him? If so, what?
I'm a significantly overweight woman. I find it demeaning and must surely now assume he thinks stuff like this about me.

OP posts:
PinkiOcelot · 01/01/2020 11:08

It’s funny.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/01/2020 11:08

I didn't think it was remotely funny - but that's because I was worried about the dog.

redwoodmazza · 01/01/2020 11:09

So is it more important for your 'feelings' to be spared than someone thinking this is funny?
How does that equate?

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 01/01/2020 11:09

I'm obese and thought it funny and I'm not easily amused.

In fact on the upside I might give that a go in the summer! I could park my ample bum on a tiny stool and call to the animals to take shelter from the heat!

I KNEW my lardy bottom could be useful one day!

Ponoka7 · 01/01/2020 11:09

This was shared on the diet groups (Exante/VLCD) that I'm on, on FB.

I had my doubts about it. I also don't like the Fat Face Friday pictures, but the majority seem to, so I didn't say anything.

A few people haven't liked the fff and have changed the meaning to feeling fabulous Friday and other positive messages.

But I don't like the picture and I'm nowhere near the size of the woman pictured. I also wonder if the picture was consented to.

HannaYeah · 01/01/2020 11:21

Not over weight and I think it’s stupid and hurtful. That’s a real person. I wouldn’t say anything or report it, but I’d think less of the person that posted it.

I can’t think of any humor I actually enjoy that mocks groups of people for any physical quality.

pictish · 01/01/2020 11:24

Neither me Hanna.

Gonetoget · 01/01/2020 11:25

It not particularly funny and I would honestly just scroll on by, largely because I find the constant ‘ inspirational ‘ memes on Facebook utterly tedious.
I don’t agree with shaming anyone for how they look and would imagine it’s counterproductive to someone who is overweight anyway, but I also don’t think it should be normalised either.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 01/01/2020 11:27

Yes, taking surreptitious photographs of unaware women minding their own business in public and using them to make casually fat-shaming memes is hilarious

Another who agrees with this. Even if it was a slim woman it would still be wrong to do this. It is just another example of this society's casual disregard for someone's privacy. It is incredibly insulting and disgusting and no, it is really not funny.

Fat shaming is a thing. There are many many complex reasons why people might be overweight and to reduce that to insulting memes and dismissive comments about "eat less, move more" is insulting to people struggling to be overweight in a society that demands that everyone should look the same.

Livelovebehappy · 01/01/2020 11:29

maybe someone overweight seeing that today, it will trigger them to think that for the sake of their health and their families they are going to adopt a more healthy lifestyle and get in shape in 2020, so could possibly have a positive outcome for some people?

zzzzzzzx · 01/01/2020 11:29

I thought it was funny. I also shared it on Facebook and I had more people like it and comment on it than most of my posts (although I rarely post).

Jellybeansincognito · 01/01/2020 11:29

I’m a fatty and thought it was funny too. I mean, it’s a pretty small stool and is holding a lot of weight- it is impressive!

You can’t change the opinion of everyone else, only yourself. If you’re not happy about your weight- which is clear by this post. Only you can do something about it.

AllergicToAMop · 01/01/2020 11:40

Also overweight people cost the NHS LESS not more because they are more likely to die young. Compared to a thin person who lives to 90, incurs geriatric medicine costs and dies from something anyway, the overweight person who dies at 60 is a bargain

Yay us?

NameChangeNugget · 01/01/2020 11:43

TigerOnATrain · 01/01/2020 11:45

@SuffraJenny

YABU (IMO) It's funny. Grin

Some people just take offence at EVERYTHING! 🙄

donquixotedelamancha · 01/01/2020 11:46

Report his Meme as offensive and have a word with him what an arsehole he is.

To whom? Do Facebook have the staff or the desire to remove all content that someone, somewhere is offended by?

Why on Earth do some people think they should have the right to censor other people over trivialities?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/01/2020 11:46

I don’t find it funny but neither am I offended by it. Just scroll past if you don’t like something on FB.

Obesity is a huge issue currently and many have lost sight of what a healthy weight is. Maybe that picture will make people think about change in diets and exercise which can only lead to good.

sandybanana · 01/01/2020 11:48

I think it's amusing.

There are more offending things to be honest than a large bottom seated on a chair.

ChocolateCoins19 · 01/01/2020 11:50

I think it's quite comical tbh.. But I have a warped sense of humour in general

GrannyBags · 01/01/2020 11:50

Saw it last night. Scrolled past. I don’t find it hilarious but I don’t see it as offensive either. I’m a bit meh really - there is more in life to worry about in my view.
And that could easily be a photo of me by the way!

RhinoskinhaveI · 01/01/2020 11:52

The same joke could be made with, for instance, a very large muscular man, like a bodybuilder on a tiny stool with a trusting little doggy sat underneath
Or would it be the same joke? With the photo there is some ambiguity.... are we laughing at the precarious situation or are we laughing at the fat lady and her large bottom.
If the photo was a very large muscular man then (for most of us) there wouldn't be any ambiguity, we would be laughing at the precariousness of the situation the contrast between a very heavy person and a tiny inadequate seat.
then again lots of people might think that large bodybuilders look ridiculous and so they would be laughing at the man's physique?

JosefKeller · 01/01/2020 11:52

What I find really offensive is that people feel they have the right to police and censor what they don't agree with.

You don't find it funny? That's absolutely ok. Ignore, comment to say it's not funny, move on.

You want to "report" and have it removed because you think you are in charge of the internet or something? Get over yourself. It's a joke. No name, no face, nothing to be concerned about (as long as the dog is fine).

sandybanana · 01/01/2020 11:56

What 👇 said

mumwon · 01/01/2020 11:56

but surely its the context - who it was sent to as well & why it was sent, because its a taste of "don't you have a sense of humour" form of bullying - & I think its tasteless, & juvenile - I wonder who originated this?

BertsFriend · 01/01/2020 12:03

I don't find it funny, but I really want to move the dog. I hate to see an animal under an occupied fold up chair.
