To think this is offensive and makes me sad?

A "friend" (male) has just shared a meme on Facebook.
AIBU to say something to him? If so, what?
I'm a significantly overweight woman. I find it demeaning and must surely now assume he thinks stuff like this about me.

OP posts:
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/01/2020 14:41

You can’t really compare it to body positive posting on SM. As far as I am aware the woman in the photo didn’t create this meme.

It appears that she is the unwitting target of someone else’s joke.

If an overweight person chooses to joke about their size then that is their choice. Fat shaming someone who has no say in the matter is a unpleasant.

PreseaCombatir · 01/01/2020 14:42

I mean, you were offended by it? So fucking what?

PinkiOcelot · 01/01/2020 14:47

@busybarbara how the person a scumbag FFS?! He isn’t. OP was offended (for some reason) but scumbag?! Really?!!

And who says this photo was taken without the woman knowing? She might have known about it.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 01/01/2020 14:47

In found it funny Grin

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 01/01/2020 15:13

And someone else will just give up in despair, feeling like nothing ever works.
This idiot idea that shaming people for their weight works really needs to go away somewhere and die. It very, very rarely works

Like many women my weight has gone up and down a lot over the years. Due to bereavement I've been underweight and then due to the treatment for depression I was massively overweight. I'm currently overweight again as I had a major operation a few months ago and had complications and lots of infections. As I can still barely walk I'm unfit as well. I'm feeling down because of the weight gain, but mostly because I'm fed up with being ill. My lovely partner doesn't care and thinks I'm beautiful whether I'm a size 8 or size 28 and that's what I'm holding onto at the moment.

I was fat shamed over Christmas, by someone who didn't know me well. It was hurtful and disgusting and no it is not going to trigger me into "doing something" because at the moment and for the foreseeable future my "doing something" is concentrated on getting better physically and mentally. But well done that person for making me feel a little bit more shit.

If people just accepted that we are all different shapes and sizes and that healthiness and beauty is individual, then this world would be a better place.

CanICelebrate · 01/01/2020 15:46

I thought it was funny too!

Poblon · 01/01/2020 15:47

It’s funny

mumwon · 01/01/2020 15:51

lets re read exactly what op said (to paraphrase) a MALE friend posted this on face book & it upset op because she felt that it was directed at her (indirectly if you follow me) & that this FRIEND probably looked at her & thought this - so she was upset & I don't think she is overly sensitive - it would leave a bad taste in my mouth in this context & as I said context is all.

ChristmasFluff · 01/01/2020 16:32

I'm not obese, don't know anyone who is obese, and don't find it funny at all.

It's basically saying how dare an obese person sit on a stool. Otherwise why not use a picture of Arnie on a stool, or another bodybuilder?

It's only funny if you think fat people are funny - because stools aren't funny (except that the word also means 'poo'). I'd definitely judge someone who shared it as having a lack of empathy. But I don't understand people who laugh at You've Been Framed (should be called 'People Getting Hurt') either.

Bodyposiftw · 01/01/2020 16:41

I don't find it funny at all...but so what. It's his facebook page. I just unfollow people whose pages are full of stuff I don't like. Easy.
It's not up to them to cater to my tastes and sensibilities.

lljkk · 01/01/2020 16:47

Lots of my FBk friends post lots of things that are contrary to my firmly held beliefs. It's not personal to me. I'm not that important to these people... they would tell me rude things to my face if they wanted to say rude things to me personally.

Was OP tagged when her FBk friend shared the item?
I can't see more than one post from OP, and that post doesn't mention that OP is the only FBk friend of this chap or that OP was tagged.

If you don't like the guy's sense of humour then 'unfriend' or unfollow him? Solution is easy.

helpfulperson · 01/01/2020 16:50

Another overweight person here who found it funny. All humour is essentially poking fun at one group of people or another.

Somanysocks · 01/01/2020 17:11

Ironically the Op has made the 'offensive' joke available to look at by a whole lot more people. Smile

AllergicToAMop · 01/01/2020 17:14

I need to know the brand of that stool😭
It's hard to find chairs, let alone folding stools which I trust.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 01/01/2020 17:15

I'm afraid I've already sniggered and sent it on to a few people by WhatsApp Grin

Me tooBlush

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 01/01/2020 17:19

Meh.. it’s pretty tasteless, but I’d probably scroll on past with an eye roll rather than taking offence. But I guess when we feel slightly self conscious about an issue, it’s easy to take things badly.

Herbalteahippie · 01/01/2020 17:19

Why are you taking it personally? The woman in the photo can’t be comfortable, ouch! it looks quite funny though.

greggers2017 · 01/01/2020 17:24

It's funny. I'm overweight. I've signed to to weight watchers and set myself a challenge to exercise every day.

AllergicToAMop · 01/01/2020 17:26

@greggers2017 good luck!

BMW6 · 01/01/2020 17:27

I'm several stone overweight and not remotely offended - just really worried about the dog.......

I may print this off and stick it on my fridge, as I really want to make the effort to lose the flab this year.

Strongmummy · 01/01/2020 17:29

I sort of chuckled but it’s in poor taste and I definitely wouldn’t post something like that. Being offended is incredibly personal and if you feel offended it’s your prerogative. If he’s a good friend perhaps have a word with him about how it made you feel.

I’ll be frank tho, most people who see a significantly overweight person will think they need to lose weight. There’s a difference between thinking it and posting something crass however

DrivingMsCrazy · 01/01/2020 17:36

I'm overweight just now due to injuries and medication. It's not particular funny but I'm not offended, or sad, or have any other reaction to it more than meh, so what. Cute dog tho. Just send him back the meme about "I'm the place where bad memes come to die" or some such.

zingally · 01/01/2020 17:37

I'd just mute or delete him. Social media is full of shit anyway.

Jenpop234 · 01/01/2020 17:38

You're offended? So what? It's a joke, if you don't find it funny, scroll on.
