To think this is offensive and makes me sad?

A "friend" (male) has just shared a meme on Facebook.
AIBU to say something to him? If so, what?
I'm a significantly overweight woman. I find it demeaning and must surely now assume he thinks stuff like this about me.

OP posts:

By taking 'offence' at something aren't you expecting other people to moderate their behaviour because you can't control yours???

EntropyRising · 01/01/2020 10:46

I guess if it were a cartoon it would be OK (but not really funny), but it's pretty grim in that that is an actual person.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 01/01/2020 10:48

If you replace the fat with a disability or race/ religion then barely anyone would share it. I’m larger and would honestly not take offence particularly if this popped up on my Facebook but then I’m so used to fat shaming being the accepted norm

Crazycrazylady · 01/01/2020 10:49

Meh another one here with a big fat ass who thought it was funny! Honestly op there is lots of stuff on the internet that I disagree with my friends about but you'll drive yourself crazy trying to police everything that upset you.

Limensoda · 01/01/2020 10:50

I've been fat...i knew I was fat before I lost weight but I didn't think every reference to weight was about me personally. I found it funny.

Booboostwo · 01/01/2020 10:51

It is awful and unkind.

The woman’s weight is no one business but her own. Frankly posters are quite thick if they don’t understand the difference between something that is bad for the individual, like being overweight, which is their own business to decide to do something about or not, and something that is wrong, which is the concern of other people but has nothing to do with being overweight.

Also overweight people cost the NHS LESS not more because they are more likely to die young. Compared to a thin person who lives to 90, incurs geriatric medicine costs and dies from something anyway, the overweight person who dies at 60 is a bargain.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/01/2020 10:52

If you are sensitive about your weight perhaps do something about it, otherwise toughen up

Hope you've got your tin hat on ... Wink

Pinkcloud88 · 01/01/2020 10:53

I'm also overweight. I'm not offended. It's a joke! I'm sure he meant no harm!

ohprettybaby · 01/01/2020 10:53

I can see how a very overweight person might be offended by it.....but I also appreciate the funny side of it. Just as I would find it funny if a picture had been shown of a stick thin person battling the wind of a hurricane.

OP, only you know how it made you feel and you should be capable of articulating that to him by yourself. What's the point of telling him what others think rather than how you felt?

This is the positive you get about obesity??!

Interestedwoman · 01/01/2020 10:57

I don't think it's offensive. It's saying that a small/cheap stool or chair can break under someone who's too heavy for what it can safely bear and it can give way. That's just a fact- I've seen it happen. Every chair/seat has a maximum load it can safely bear.

It's not saying anything about the woman's character or anything.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 01/01/2020 10:57

Please can people stop bringing in race/religion/gender into this, these groups are not comparable to obesity.

JosefKeller · 01/01/2020 10:58

It's funny.
Rude if sent directly to you, but as a generic joke, it's fine.
You don't have to like the joke, that's fine too.

The dog does look a little concerned

As a basic, taking photos of people unawares, in order to humiliate them on the internet for laughs is a shitty thing to do. I know this woman’s face isn’t visible but her family and friends will still know it’s her and it will get around. It will have an impact on her.

I know it’s common practice now and we have come to accept that we no longer have autonomy over how our image might be used...but I still wouldn’t exploit someone in this way. I’d feel a right cunt.

As an asides, it’s not funny. It’s dumbass and mean. Be better ffs.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/01/2020 10:59

You can report it toFb no it probably won't do much good but it does mean the op willsee less of this nonsense.

You don't need to report it to FB for that, and it's unlikely to breach their community standards. Just unfollow him. He'll never know; you're still friends, you won't see his posts unless you go to his wall.

Report it anyway if it makes you feel better though. It's a pretty crap meme, I'm sure the original was from years and years ago and it wasn't funny then, either.

This was shared on my FB page by a friend who is very overweight ( readily admits it) & she thought it was hilarious.

pictish · 01/01/2020 11:02

Did she? She must be easily amused then.

Somanysocks · 01/01/2020 11:03

@Puzzledandpissedoff I can take it Grin

cushioncovers · 01/01/2020 11:04

I'm obese and I thought it was funny I shared it on my fb page. It could almost be my ass on that stool. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

simplekindoflife · 01/01/2020 11:04

Oh ffs... some people look for things to be offended about. Hmm Get over yourself!

Mrsjayy · 01/01/2020 11:06

All this "hilarity" at a fat womans arse Confused

KatherineJaneway · 01/01/2020 11:06

I thought it was mildly amusing. Couldn't get offended about it.

1foot2feet · 01/01/2020 11:07

I feel sorry for the woman in the image, I doubt she knew it was being taken and shared. Yes you can't identify her but every time she sees it shared she'd know it was her.
Whilst I don't think it's worth taking offence over and you can't really tell people what to not post, anyone that finds it funny has a pretty low bar for humour, the joke is 'oh this stool might break and kill or injure the dog haha how hilarious'. Just click hide posts like this or hide posts from [page he shared it from], and don't dwell on it.

longtimemarried · 01/01/2020 11:07

Actually it has inspired me to start my diet plan today.
