A "friend" (male) has just shared a meme on Facebook.
AIBU to say something to him? If so, what?
I'm a significantly overweight woman. I find it demeaning and must surely now assume he thinks stuff like this about me.

OP posts:
maddy68 · 01/01/2020 12:05

I thought it was funny !

StrangeLookingParasite · 01/01/2020 12:11

maybe someone overweight seeing that today, it will trigger them to think that for the sake of their health and their families they are going to adopt a more healthy lifestyle and get in shape in 2020, so could possibly have a positive outcome for some people?

And someone else will just give up in despair, feeling like nothing ever works.
This idiot idea that shaming people for their weight works really needs to go away somewhere and die. It very, very rarely works.

Straycatstrut · 01/01/2020 12:27

I don't find it funny or offensive, just boring, predictable. I've gained over half a stone over winter/xmas (always do) just got to slog it off in the NY.

I doubt anyone actually LOL'd.

Dita73 · 01/01/2020 12:28

The meme is funny and has a good point!

Temp123999 · 01/01/2020 12:32

@Yetanotherwinter
I know what you mean it really brings me down not being able to be rude and offensive to others.

RagingBall · 01/01/2020 12:33

I'm with you OP. Being overweight is still seen as being fair game for abuse/jokes, in a way that colour/race etc isn't.

Poorolddaddypig · 01/01/2020 12:33

YABU.

Lulabellamozzarella · 01/01/2020 12:36

I’m very overweight and I think it’s hilarious.

I think body positivity has gone too far. I’m not condoning fat shaming but SM has a lot to answer for. I’ve seen photos of unhealthily obese young women with remarks like “You look gawjuss hun!” and “Ignore the haterz!” etc.

It’s like a heroin addict posting pictures and people going “Wow babe you look stunning! Ignore the people commenting on your 4 remaining teeth

and the fact you weigh 3 stone! They’re just jellus!”

KellyHall · 01/01/2020 12:37

I chuckled. Wouldn't it be nice to find the fun and positive in such things?!

Are you saying you don't think the tiny stool might not be strong enough?

And you don't think the dog is in any danger whatsoever?

JigsawsAreInPieces · 01/01/2020 12:38

It's funny.

I saw this earlier and felt quite uncomfortable about it.

AllergicToAMop · 01/01/2020 12:41

You can't really be comparing fat and race🙄

AllergicToAMop · 01/01/2020 12:46

@Lulabellamozzarella can't but agree with that.

busybarbara · 01/01/2020 13:02

Just unfriend this scumbag and you won’t have to see his “funny” memes again.

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 01/01/2020 13:04

It's bullying behaviour. Drawing attention to yourself at the expense of someone else without regard to others feelings. If you saw an overweight child in a playground being called names by others and being laughed at, would you still think it's a joke? Because the arseholes who post this kind of shite are displaying an sttitude like this in front of their kids, who then think it's ok to be unkind about others.

JellyfishandShells · 01/01/2020 13:08

I'm not overweight but I didn't find this funny - just juvenile and thoughtlessly unkind.

There is a difference between not applauding the extremes of the fat positivity movement and not being casually cruel. My DH is from a family who default to criticism of different body types to them and I have pointed it out to him. He was ranting on about an MP he really didn't like, and was calling her an opportunistic hypocrite ( I agreed) but he had to make it ' a fat opportunistic hypocrite' . She wasn't particularly big - but even if she was it has no effect on her role or behaviour as a politician. Just using it as an insult - a perceived personality flaw to add to her actual personality

Knowhowufeel · 01/01/2020 13:08

I thought it was funny, and I've been massively overweight.

YABU to take it so personally, but that's more about your insecurity with your weight than the joke itself.

sqirrelfriends · 01/01/2020 13:17

Of fgs, it's funny and it's been doing the rounds. Don't take offence where I'm sure none was meant.

LovePoppy · 01/01/2020 13:43

I love when offensive people get offended at being told they are offensive

Instead of taking it on the chin, they get hurt and accuse people of being snowflakes and overly sensitive and that they need to learn how to take a joke. How dare they be called out on their insensitiveness?! It was a joke!

🙄🙄🙄

PreseaCombatir · 01/01/2020 13:50

No one has the right to not be offended

JosefKeller · 01/01/2020 14:23

I love when offensive people get offended at being told they are offensive

the only one who are offended on this thread are the ones who feel this joke is is a problem. Everybody else seems to be pretty chilled about it Grin

Your post is offensive to me LovePoppy, shall I ask MN to remove it? Where does it end...

donquixotedelamancha · 01/01/2020 14:25

Instead of taking it on the chin, they get hurt and accuse people of being snowflakes and overly sensitive and that they need to learn how to take a joke.

I think you have misunderstood most people's point. You/OP/me have an absolute right to think 'eww' about the poster who made this joke.

To remonstrate with the poster because they posted something OP doesn't like would be arogant and socially odd.

To go further (as some posters do) and think private enterprise should censor everyone's output to prevent 'offence' of this type is bizarre and totalitarian.

Chochito · 01/01/2020 14:25

I saw the meme and reported it. The person who posted it isn't a close friend that I see regularly in person but if he were I'd mention it directly.

PreseaCombatir · 01/01/2020 14:41

Chocito didn’t like it and has reported it. Do you think people should bow to your whims in all other walks of life too?
