To think this is offensive and makes me sad?

A "friend" (male) has just shared a meme on Facebook.
AIBU to say something to him? If so, what?
I'm a significantly overweight woman. I find it demeaning and must surely now assume he thinks stuff like this about me.

OP posts:
PaprikaPringle · 02/01/2020 14:33

it’s so basic and lacking in wit and finesse. It’s humour for thickies

Agreed.

I wouldn't be offended by it, just mortified my friend had such a juvenile sense of humour.

soembarrassing19 · 02/01/2020 14:52

Just because you don't find it funny doesn't mean people who do are thick. People all have different senses of humour. No need for name calling.

Crunchymum · 02/01/2020 14:54

And now you've just shared it was MN.

The irony!!!

Crunchymum · 02/01/2020 14:54

Was = with

Sunflowersok · 02/01/2020 14:55

I wouldn’t take memes personally op. I’m sure he didn’t mean to cause offence to you

ClemDanFango · 02/01/2020 14:56

I must be a ‘thicky’ because I thought it was funny im a fatty too so double thick.

DickDewy · 02/01/2020 14:59

I have seen this a lot on SM over the last couple of days.

I think it's OK. Not especially funny, but not offensive either. And if you're that fat on a flimsy little stool, it's a bit daft to think people wouldn't notice it.

Areyoufree · 02/01/2020 15:01

Yes, taking surreptitious photographs of unaware women minding their own business in public and using them to make casually fat-shaming memes is hilarious.

Yup. I am surprised at the number of people on this thread who think this meme is okay. It's really not - especially if the woman pictured didn't know it was being created. Can you imagine finding yourself pictured and mocked like this? Horrendous.

Gingerkittykat · 02/01/2020 15:17

I'm fat, not as fat as the woman in the photo but seeing this pic and reading this thread has really upset me.

A lot of people see fat people as sub human and open to ridicule, just treat us like human beings and not a joke.

Did you know that fat shaming is the least effective way of "helping" a person lose weight. The extra shame piled on just makes a person feel worse about themselves and less likely to succeed.

Areyoufree · 02/01/2020 15:24

A lot of people see fat people as sub human and open to ridicule...

Yes, they do. And it is somehow justified under this bullshit umbrella of "doing it for your own good". Makes me so angry.

LittleTinselTown · 02/01/2020 15:29

You don't get to dictate what people share on their own Facebook page. People share shitty posts all the time, but it's not up to you to decide what's acceptable. Either unfriend them or scroll on.

DCOkeford · 02/01/2020 15:42

I'm with you OP. Being overweight is still seen as being fair game for abuse/jokes, in a way that colour/race etc isn't.

Oh my goodness, did you actually just say that!??

Do you have any idea how offensive this comment is?

People from ethnic minorities suffer oppression, discrimination and abuse for something over which they have literally no control at all, and you are likening it to obesity, which, when all is said and done is a choice made by the individual???

I am struggling to think of a more ignorant and offensive comment tbh. I suggest you contact MNHQ and see if they'll delete it for you.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 02/01/2020 15:47

Ludicrous! Grin

Panicovereveryone · 02/01/2020 15:48

If you’re fat, own it.

We all know it shortens your life, causes cancer, places strain on your joints, makes life awkward (think plane seats and small stools), but if you’re fat and happy great, if you’re offended that other people are shocked or laugh at your size, get help, get therapy and sort it out.

Several pp saying it's not about how fat the woman is, it's about how tiny the stool is makes absolutely no sense.

The 'joke' is about a fat woman sitting on a tiny stool, of course it's about how big and heavy she is in relation to how tiny the stool is.

If a slim woman was sitting on the stool there would be no 'joke' as it would be pointless.

Obviously, sense of humour is subjective.

Personally, I can't find anything funny about it, but that doesn't mean I don't have a well developed sense of humour, it's because I don't find 'jokes' at other people's expense funny. I don't find 'jokes' about disabled people, other races or old people funny either.

Is it offensive? Depends how you define offensive I suppose. I think if I were fat and someone sent me that I'd be pretty upset.

StrangeLookingParasite · 02/01/2020 19:53

Oh, so that justifies being turned into a humiliating meme, then?

HannaYeah · 02/01/2020 21:45

The idea that what someone can control is ok to mock is dumb.

We have no idea what legitimate health issues someone has that weight gain as a side effect.

Muminabun · 02/01/2020 21:58

I am overweight and I think it is funny. The woke/ thought police are constantly vigilant for ‘micro aggressions’ etc yawn.......

Why would you think he is targeting you with his message? Is he normally an arsehole?

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 02/01/2020 23:00

I don't think it's funny personally but I also think "offensive" is a bit over dramatic. But then people are "offended" by anything these days. People saying report it to Facebook good luck with that they don't give a shit about removing much worse, like for example literal pornographic images dressed up as humour, graphic violence or 'hilarious' memes taking the piss out of people of a different race or with disabilities just to name a couple. Save your offence for actually distasteful stuff on the internet. If you took the picture personally well unless he sent it to you direct via private message I doubt he realised it would hit a nerve.

Cjmkennedy · 04/01/2020 22:13

The stool is ass-pirational

Aroundnabout1 · 04/01/2020 22:51

Fatism is one of the last socially acceptable 'isms' as people arent allowed to be racist, sexist or homophobic anymore. Overweight people are still allowed to be picked on and bullied. I did laugh at first but then it made me feel like it was bullying fat people.
