AIBU?

To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

Am I being unreasonable?

I don't drink coffee, but my husband does. He would refuse instant. I guess it's what your palet gets used to.

You are not unreasonable to serve it and neither is anyone to refuse it.

She's being totally OTT.

No, it is a disaster. I would be too polite to complain, though.

I must be honest I’m not fussy generally but can’t drink instant. Wouldn’t have been rude about it though!

She's being a dick. Most people who don't love instant would still drink azera instant coffee.

Of course instant coffee is a complete disaster. This isn’t the 70s!

(Just kidding OP Grin)

Illy instant is nicer than Azera (in my opinion)

I love Azera, so if you offered me that I would snatch you hand off haha. Definitely not being unreasonable, next time offer her water :)

Yes, yes it is.

Would it be possible to make coffee in a cafetiere or espresso pot? I'd probably refuse instant but it wouldn't be a big issue for me.

Could you make tea?

Expressedways · 13/12/2019 18:28

You can get a cafeterie cheaply from any supermarket with a home aisle and a bag of ground coffee- I would do this before the party and everyone will be happy! Personally I think instant is vile and would refuse it but your friend was rude to be so explicit- I would have just said no thank you and I imagine your party guests would say they same if it was instant or nothing and they also don’t like it.

What parallel universe is MN tonight. Azera coffee is standard - I don't like instant but this is decent for instant coffee -. We all have our names tins of this in work Xmas Grin

It really is a disaster.

My husbands family is like this-we don’t drink coffee but I always have 2 very nice instants on hand and it’s like the end of the world!

Maybe I should react the same to their (awful, weak) teabags 🤔

I drink it at work I like it, obviously have a Nespresso at home.

Instant is gross. I haven't drunk it much really ever but completely stopped about 4 years ago. It's just not coffee.

speakout · 13/12/2019 18:30

Complete disaster OP.
Doubt it is recoverable.

Not sure what your AIBU is but your mate is being a massively unreasonable snob. Unless the rest of your friends are also so rude as to complain about the quality of hot drinks given them when they visit others. In which case get new friends.

I drink instant and ground coffee (cafetiere). Often I don't want the faff of doing a cafetiere. To me they are kind of 2 different drinks, both have their place. Sure, 'proper' coffee tastes better and is morally superior in every way but meh sometimes you just want a hot drink.

I prefer instant coffee. I didn't know I was so uncultured!

If someone complains about you having only instant coffee, I am sorry, but they are snobby feckers.

FenellaMaxwell · 13/12/2019 18:31

I have to admit I wouldn’t drink instant, but I wouldn’t be a twat about it either.

Report

ShinyMe · 13/12/2019 18:31

I wouldn't even tell them it was instant. Offer them a coffee, bring out coffee. They don't have to know. And if they hate it, then they'd be bloody rude to say so.

CreaturesVeiledByNight · 13/12/2019 18:32

Rude much! I don’t drink instant coffee at home, but if you offered me a cup I wouldn’t be nasty about it, I would say thank you and drink it. Because I’m a grown up and I don’t expect other people to cater to my tastes 100% of the time. It’ll be fine for the birthday party!
