To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

How very rude of the friend! Total snob.
I like coffee
I drink gold blend for the easiest
I also have a cafetière and a filter machine that grounds the beans
I use them all as and when I feel like it

Rosieposy4 · 13/12/2019 20:18

You are both being unreasonable.
Instant coffee is the pits, I’d just have a tap water if I knew that was on offer, but those nespresso machines are an environmental disaster.

LellyMcKelly · 13/12/2019 20:18

You can pick up a cafetière in Asda for about a tenner, and a bag of their Colombian ground coffee for about £3. It tastes great, the pot is reusable, and you can make 4 or 5 coffees in one go. I’d have tea instead of instant coffee.

Expressedways · 13/12/2019 20:22

Nespresso pods are aluminium and can be fully recycled but you have to post them back to Nespresso as only their factories can process them. It’s free so there’s no excuse not to! So I don’t get this pods are bad for the environment nonsense, surely people aren’t just chucking them in the household recycling and expecting them to be processed? If they did then yes, they would end up in landfill but that’s completely avoidable.

HoomanMoomin · 13/12/2019 20:29

Ew. No thanks. It’s definitely a disaster in my book.

Brittany2019 · 13/12/2019 20:33

@DuggeesWoggle Yes, thank you! Instant and ‘real’ coffee are two different drinks. I like both - real coffee black with sugar, and instant white no sugar. Which I’ll have depends on the time of day and/or my mood.

Instagrump · 13/12/2019 20:33

I LOVE Nescafé Azera Intenso. I would take that any day over all other coffees from instants to Himalayan fresh ground beans hand picked by virgins served in a solid gold cafetière. In my circle of friends, Instant is the norm. Maybe all you lot are dead posh and I'm a total commoner but instant would never be a disaster at all. Not the nicest coffee but definitely drinkable.

ThomasinaandSeptimus · 13/12/2019 20:34

Are you actually in an episode of motherland OP? Is your friend Amanda?!

nakedavengeragain · 13/12/2019 20:40

Re the 'Nespresso is an environmental disaster'...

The aluminium waste from 2 pods used per day equals 186g of aluminium per month. Which is recycled when you send it back to Nespresso.

That's the equivalent of 10 tin cans. Unless you believe baked beans and tinned tomatoes are an environmental disaster everyone needs to stop being so dramatic about Nespresso and focus your attention on something that IS an environmental disaster like disposable nappies.

Mumdiva99 · 13/12/2019 20:46

I used to hate and refuse instant - but actually now I mostly drink millicano or azera. They are fine - even for a coffee snob.

Alwaysrainsonme · 13/12/2019 20:49

Too risky, I think you should cancel the party.

MegaNan400 · 13/12/2019 20:50

coffee

AlexaShutUp · 13/12/2019 20:50

Have to agree with @ShinyMe, most people would probably not be able to tell the difference.

Really? I see them as two totally different drinks.

I don't mind instant coffee and would drink it quite happily in this situation, but I don't see it as a substitute for proper coffee at all. I totally get why some coffee lovers don't like it. It's a different drink.

OP, I don't it matters if you only serve instant, but do let people know in advance and have some alternative options available for those who don't like it, e.g. herbal teas etc.

I very much doubt that anyone will be rude enough to complain about the lack of proper coffee!

SoleBizzz · 13/12/2019 20:51

Obviously a Tory

ItFigures · 13/12/2019 20:51

Your friend is pretty rude OP. I really don’t like a nespresso coffee and would actually rather instant if the real thing wasn’t available

MegaNan400 · 13/12/2019 20:51

it is nice

MegaNan400 · 13/12/2019 20:52

and refreshing too

MegaNan400 · 13/12/2019 20:53

yum, yum!

Booberella9 · 13/12/2019 20:53

What on earth. How is this a thing? It's normal to have instant coffee at home surely Confused

You need new friends OP.

imnotsureaboutdinosaurs · 13/12/2019 20:53

Now I know why MIL kept asking if we want a cafetière or nespresso for Christmas Blush

Our nespresso broke and we don't use it much so just use the illy/Azera instants instead. Didn't realise it was such a faux pas!

Fink · 13/12/2019 20:55

I don't drink instant, but if I were at a party at someone else's house and that was all that was on offer, I'd just politely say no to the offer and not think anything of it. Some of my friends and family drink instant coffee, fine, I don't go around judging their parties based on it.

I am not fussed with status at all, but I think instant coffee is horrible. I don't have a coffee machine though, just a cafetiére.

Joannaaaa · 13/12/2019 20:58

Meanwhile back in the real non Mumsnet world, most people have a jar of Nescafé and a box of PG Tips.

MegaNan400 · 13/12/2019 21:00

Wow AuntBetty1234, that's one heck of a story you got going there! Congratulations my dear! Hope to hear more soon!!
