To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

I think nespresso coffee is dreadful personally. I cannot understand why the machines have caught on (and they are horrible for the environment).

Buy a cafetière.

I'd rather drink instant than use a pod machine. We're supposed to be helping the environment but apparently being an awful snob about a drink is more important. Tell her the plastic waste is disgusting and you're moving above that for the sake of your future grandchildren.

Azera is really nice imho. But then I use dunkin donuts coffee in our filter machine so what do I know 🤷‍♀️

Someone hell bent on making sure you weren’t happy with you’re coffee offerings isn’t someone whose opinion I would advise you to give too much credit tbh

We fresh grind out beans, and do pour over.
I can taste the difference, I promise you.

It's like saying people are full of shit when they notice the difference between white and whole wheat bread, or between maple syrup and aunt Jemima

Instant is fine. I even drink the cheap stuff at work without feeling it’s that bad.

YABU to have a pod machine because of how bad the pods are for the environment.

Instants awful.

Mind you I only drink freshly ground coffee, 100% arabica so I wouldn’t want nespresso either.

It’s christmas, can’t you just open a bottle of baileys?.

I’m astounded at the coffee snobbery, surely if you go to someone’s house you’re there primarily for the company, not the coffee?

DH drinks instant coffee, I drink tea - as do most of our friends. I’m not going to be buying a cafetière that’ll only be used a few times a year at most, and wasting money on coffee grounds that could be sitting untouched at the back of a cupboard for months and months (and I suspect the coffee would go stale and tasteless before it was used up anyway).

Just offer out Bellini's in crystal glasses
That is the only appropriate response

She’s being a complete bitch. Yes Nespresso is much nicer but she’s was in your house and has made you feel bad. What would she do in a house that only has instant?

If you’re really worried about the weekend then get a caffetiere and filter coffee but you shouldn’t have to care about her being a vile cow.

Nespresso is nothing like instant coffee! Just because it’s in a pod, it’s a perfectly acceptable espresso and better than most coffee shop coffees you can get.

I don't drink coffee, but my husband does. He would refuse instant.

Then he would be being very rude.

Prefer instant. Like the posh stuff in the black jar but can also hPpily drink kenco or supermarket on equivalent. Can't gand nescafe or supermarket equivalent of that and instant with ground up coffee beans to give you that gritty texture is vile.

I would refuse instant. But not in the way your friend did. I do find it odd when people don't have any form of coffee machine though if they drink coffee themselves.

I like filter coffee too. Not keen on pods etc, too strong and not hot.

@NeedAGrip

I used to have a cafetière for my snobby guests and it took me 6 months after moving to realise I'd left it at my old house. I haven't replaced it, and won't be. So at my house you drink the instant or you don't. Similarly you will not be offered a glass of wine, and I do not own a cork screw. I occasionally buy a single serve to cook with, and people are welcome to bring a screw top bottle. We always have a wide range of soft drinks though, which I find depressingly lacking at o they peoples houses. I was a house guest when I was pregnant and had the choice between water, wine, naice coffee or mid-range tea. I bought some juice and fizzy with me, though.

I love instant coffee. A big mug of Nescafé gold after a wet cold dog walk revives me. I also love coffee from my drip machine and my Nespresso machine. I just love coffee and am not fussy how I get it!

I'd rather go without then drink instant. However I wouldn't call it a disaster I think she's being very rude

@thedquitz I like instant, in half pint mugs. Currently knock off Aldi gold blend. I feel such a peasant...

Instant is fine. I have it with powdered milk at work, love it!

Anyway, nespresso is piss. If you’re going to do proper espresso based drinks, do a real espresso. Or just use a cafetière like PPs have said.
