To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

I don't like instant at all but what about offering ground coffee in a cafetiere? Or if you don't have one, you can now get Taylor's coffee bags which are basically teabags but for coffee Smile. They are not as good as brewing a fresh, full pot but they are a damn sight nicer than instant!

Sprinklemetinsel · 13/12/2019 18:32

Sorry but the nespresso machine is the disaster, unless you have refillable pods! Pod machines are ok for the occasional cup, but not for big groups of people or several cups a day!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/12/2019 18:33

DH is about 70% instant coffee, I reckon...

I'm a proper coffee snob so I won't drink it, but I don't give him any grief about his preference because I'm not a bellend

Hagbeth · 13/12/2019 18:33

Sorry I wouldn’t drink it! I’m a coffee snob. I treated it like fine wine Grin

SpringFan · 13/12/2019 18:33

I don't drink instant- would chose to have tea or water if it was offered. DSs drink Azera though, and I use it in chocolate brownies.

HanginWithMyGnomies · 13/12/2019 18:34

I’m with pps grab you cafeterie and a naice coffee. Even Azera is a no go for guests now.. who knew 🤷🏻‍♀️

HanginWithMyGnomies · 13/12/2019 18:35

Ummmm cafetière even!

WellTidy · 13/12/2019 18:36

Gobsmacked at these responses. Nine times out of ten, when I visit somebody, it is instant coffee that is served. Which is absolutely fine.

Darkbendis · 13/12/2019 18:36

DH prefers instant coffee. But he admits he's a barbarian Grin . I drink only tea. However, we have a cafetiere as well as a Tassimo machine, so our guests can enjoy "real" coffee.

MyDcAreMarvel · 13/12/2019 18:36

Instant is pretty awful tbf.

Midnight0 · 13/12/2019 18:36

Have to agree with @ShinyMe, most people would probably not be able to tell the difference.

somebrightmorning · 13/12/2019 18:36

good idea to buy a cafetiere.

Can you buy yourself some more interesting friends whilst you're at it? I would "instantly" lose interest in someone who genuinely thought I cared what "No one I know" does. Is your friend quite insecure about status?

don't be like her

Ohyesiam · 13/12/2019 18:38

I am a total coffee snob, but actually Azera is fine. Anyway I’d never complain like your rude friend.

somebrightmorning · 13/12/2019 18:39

more maliciously.... can you snob her right back and say you've reached the point where you no longer feel it's responsible to use single-pod Nespresso machines? That should send her anxiety levels soaring and hopefully she might buy some fairtrade coffee beans.

1Morewineplease · 13/12/2019 18:40

So much coffee snobbery around.

Azerro is absolutely fine , as well as similar.

If people want barrista style coffee then they can just go to an overpriced coffee shop.
If you’re popping in to have a natter With family or friends then just cope with what your host offers you.
It’s rude to expect otherwise.

Pfefferkuchen · 13/12/2019 18:40

You are not a hotel, you offer what you want. If they don't like it, they can decline.

It's funny how people can be coffee snob, or wine snob but don't care about soft drink and conveniently forget the guests who don't or can't drink at all - driving, medication, pregnancy...

HanginWithMyGnomies · 13/12/2019 18:41

Ooooh I like @somebrightmornings response 😂😂😂

Bigredumbrella · 13/12/2019 18:42

Instant doesn't even taste like coffee. If you cant tell the difference there's something wrong with your taste buds. If I went to someones house &,they were offering instant i wouldn't be rude id just politely decline and go for tea.

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 13/12/2019 18:42

Make instant on the stove and tell them it's the stuff shit out by leopards (or whatever they are!).

NorthEndGal · 13/12/2019 18:43

I dont drink instant, and I can tell in a single sip if it is. I'd just ask for water instead.

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2019 18:44

Instant is fairly unpleasant but your friend is massively gauche.

SinglePringle · 13/12/2019 18:44

I would select tea in this circumstance. I hate instant. Wouldn’t be rude about it though.

somebrightmorning · 13/12/2019 18:44

"tell them it's the stuff shit out by leopards"

:) :) :)

Phlewf · 13/12/2019 18:44

I’m going to say it, coffee pods are nothing like real coffee, especially the ones with the weird milk powder we’re supposed pretend isn’t powdered milk.
Coffee is like wine, people think they can tell the difference but can’t in a blind test.
And anyone who refuses a coffee someone has made because it’s instant needs to have a think about their priorities.

Armi · 13/12/2019 18:45

Instant coffee is mostly revolting, except Gold Blend which is very posh. It had the best adverts (in the 80s) and is the very pinnacle of class and sophistication. Nothing will convince me otherwise.
