To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

An Aeropress is a type of coffee maker that uses a small paper filter and is easier to clean than a cafetiere. It compresses the grounds into a little cake that you eject into the bin then a quick rinse. It is very clever.

PineappleDanish · 18/12/2019 08:09

I like both. I like a proper coffee brewed from scratch, but also don't mind a Kenco when I can't be arsed with the faff.

Glitterblue · 18/12/2019 08:14

I really don't like instant, but I'd never be rude at someone else's house and I drink it when visiting, without saying anything.

lifeisgoodagain · 18/12/2019 08:24

'Tis!!! Hate instant. Would never serve it, though I have a jar for fussy relatives who request "proper coffee" aka Nescafé. Get a cafetière, works without fail and no waste plastic pods

MerchantOfVenom · 18/12/2019 08:27

Squash and instant coffee are two entirely different things.

No - they're an exact parallel.

Instant is fake coffee.

'Squash' is fake juice.

'Squash' is such a bizarre thing to drink behind the age of 5, anyway.

chillichoclove · 18/12/2019 08:28

Two things
One - nespresso coffee is never hot enough and bad for the environment , all that single use plastic!!!
Two - so rude! Instant coffee is a different drink. If you don't want it say no thank you. And frankly tell her to get perspective. It's an offer of a hot drink!!

LaurieMarlow · 18/12/2019 08:33

No - they're an exact parallel.

How ridiculous. They’re different drinks.

I don’t think anyone gives much of a shit about the ‘fake’ aspect, but it’s perfectly possible to like squash and hate instant coffee.

I can’t fathom why anyone is questioning this.

nakedavengeragain · 18/12/2019 08:46

For the THIRD TIME! A Nespresso pod uses 1g of infinitely recyclable aluminium. Not plastic. That's 5% of a tin can.

Aroundnabout1 · 18/12/2019 08:53

Sounds like filter paper would make it healthier than the cafetiere. Im so confused by coffee makers. Want something quick with not much washing up. Is Aeropress hard to clean?

MerchantOfVenom · 18/12/2019 09:05

I can’t fathom why anyone is questioning this.

I can't fathom why anyone wouldn't.

Squash is a worse - fake - abomination than instant coffee.

It is to juice what instant is to coffee.

Sparklingbrook · 18/12/2019 09:06

I can’t fathom how this thread is still going. Grin

Squash is a worse - fake - abomination than instant coffee.

But this thread isn’t about what’s a ‘worse’ abomination.

It’s about what people like/dislike drinking.

Whatever point you think you’re making has no relevance.

LaurieMarlow · 18/12/2019 09:10

It is showing surprising longevity

MerchantOfVenom · 18/12/2019 09:11

I'm not really making any point - rather, just agreeing with someone else.

IceniSky · 18/12/2019 09:15

I drink instant. Coffee machine coffee makes me feel sick / sets off IBS. We gave our pod coffee machine away. Terrible for the environment and DH now uses an aero press.

Lweji · 18/12/2019 09:23

A Nespresso pod uses 1g of infinitely recyclable aluminium. Not plastic. That's 5% of a tin can.

Recycling them is still a waste of resources, particularly when most energy still comes from fossil fuels.
Plus, how many are actually recicled? If they're so much lighter than an aluminium can, are they actually picked up?

Aluminium extraction is not without problems.

Aluminium pods are still wasteful and an environmental burden for which there are better and greener alternatives.

nakedavengeragain · 18/12/2019 09:31

There's some research that shows that the electricity (assuming not from renewable resources) used for a pod machine, because it heats up exactly the right amount of water, is better for the environment that other coffee types that may heat significantly more than is needed.

I don't hear anyone pontificating about the relative merits of tinned tomatoes (17g of aluminium) over cartoned over bottled yet 1g of aluminium (a day everyone one of which is recycled in this house) is an environmental pariah.

ClientListQueen · 18/12/2019 09:34

@Aroundnabout1 I'm going for an aero press :) they look v easy (watched a YouTube video!)

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 18/12/2019 09:40

Surely you won’t be stood making coffees at your kid’s party? Put something they can help themselves to out on the side, like cold drinks, but it’s not a cafe!

evilharpyinapeartree · 18/12/2019 09:41

Aeropresses are incredibly easy to clean. Brilliant inventions. You can rinse the filters and get several uses out of them too if you want.

ginghamstarfish · 18/12/2019 09:46

What amazing snobbery on here! It's all down to individual preference, as with most things. Also, and I know it's been said, but I don't think any responsible adult should be buying machines which use single-serve 'pods' or whatever. Get off your arse and make coffee with actual ground cofffe, using one of the other methods if instant is beneath you.

eggandonion · 18/12/2019 09:47

Squash, aka watery orange, in a jug is a feature of weddings in Northern Ireland. It is a drink in its own right! I love a glass of watery every few years.
Because of this I had to make proper coffee using my one cup cafetiere this morning, dh is away. Normally I'd have instant.

turkeyontheplate · 18/12/2019 09:51

I have a 17yo coffee snob. We bought him a bean-to-cup coffee machine for his birthday and it's his pride and joy. He likes to start the day with a cup of eye-wateringly strong espresso, which he sips daintily while perusing news headlines, making existential-angst remarks and sneering at his little brother for drinking chocolate milk.

I'd forgotten how much fun it is being a teenager Grin

goodluckdontdie · 18/12/2019 11:47

Squash, aka watery orange

It's more like orangey water than watery orange, surely?
