To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

I’m enjoying how offended some people are with my liking of squash and ‘proper’ coffee but not instant coffee. Perhaps I should raise my squash game and accept only hand squeezed orange juice made from oranges exclusively sourced by Waitrose. Then at least I’d be consistent. Although I might still ruin it with my liking for quality streets and dislike of truffles.... Wink

I'm just as amused by you thinking anyone is offended as I am by you saying you only like real coffee but will have squash rather than instant. Grin

Our tastes are just what we like - they’re not defined by some arbitrary standard of properness. For example

  • I like both instant and ground coffee
  • I like orange juice (but only smooth) but not orange squash
  • I like Twixes and Mars Bars but not very dark chocolate
  • I like going to an Indian restaurant but not microwave curries
  • I like ketchup but not fresh tomatoes
  • I like both supermarket ice cream and home-made gelato
  • I like bottled IPA but not draught real ales

None of these are anything to do with how ‘proper’ the food is - just how much I enjoy the taste.

And for everything we say is ‘proper’ I’m sure someone could explain exactly why the version we like is inferior to a much more ‘proper’ version.

I don’t like instant but I wouldn’t say anything if that’s what I was given. If I knew someone was offering instant though, I’d opt for tea.

It can taste OK but can give me the shits, so i don't tend to drink it.

I drink, and enjoy both.

I've had some foul, instant coffee and I've had some foul 'proper' coffee. I've had some great tasting instant coffee and some great tasting 'proper' coffee.

So would I be more cultured if I enjoyed the foul 'proper' coffee more than the great tasting instant coffee?

There are some silly snobberies around certain food and drinks and some people do like to make an issue out of these silly things.

It's one cup of coffee, it might not be your idea of the ideal cup of coffee but if it's all that's on offer drink it or refuse it. Don't try to make out that making a fuss about drinking coffee prepared in a certain way makes you somehow superior or more sophisticated; it doesn't.

I wouldn't mention your coffee machine didnt work but just point out that the pods are so environmentally unfriendly that consciously you have gone over to instant for the future of the planet #forGreta.

Someone at work has just made me a cup of instant. I'm drinking it to not be rude but it's bogging. I think it's Gold Blend.
