To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

It is a disaster. Offer tea instead. I never drink instant, but would be happy to drink bog standard tea.

Bluntness100 · 13/12/2019 19:07

Who the hell complains about the coffee ar someone's home. She sounds so far up her own arse. 🤣

HanginWithMyGnomies · 13/12/2019 19:07

@TheSquitz get off the thread 😂 if it was camp coffee, you’d be ousted!!!

PlushPlush · 13/12/2019 19:08

Wow I'm surprised to see so much snobbery! But then I mainly drink coffee for the buzz rather than the taste so would never turn my nose up at instant if I was tired...

Lweji · 13/12/2019 19:08

It's a disaster for coffee snobs.
It does taste different, but, depending on brand, it isn't necessarily awful.

You don't have to have any sort of coffee. They can have other drinks.

PlinkPlink · 13/12/2019 19:09

That's quite a snobby thing to say 😂😂😂

Tell her to get over herself and drink some Kenco.

Seriously, people won't be bothered. It's nice to have filtered coffee but I'm just as happy with an instant brew 😂

HundredMilesAnHour · 13/12/2019 19:10

I don't drink instant. Haven't done for 25 years. But I'm not a fan of Nespresso/Tassimo etc either. When you offer me coffee, unless I know that you make decent (fresh!) coffee I'll always err on the side of caution and ask for tea instead, or tap water. But I'd never be rude about it.

KrampusTime · 13/12/2019 19:11

I'm not snobby, I buy own brand ketchup, cereal and beans etc, and love a crisp sandwich.

But I can't drink instant. I'd rather drink water. Decent ground coffee and nice peanut butter are the most expensive things on our shop. I'd eat beans on toast for a fortnight if I had to to save for a new coffee machine.

StillWeRise · 13/12/2019 19:11

snobby- 'coffee? OMG is that INSTANT??? no thanks, it's vile can't believe you are expecting me to drink that'
not snobby- 'coffee? er...what sort?...actually I'd love some tea if you have it'

Lweji · 13/12/2019 19:12

Message her saying you'll accept her Christmas present of a Nespresso machine in time for the party.

Phlewf · 13/12/2019 19:13

This is a hot topic at work. We have a canteen serving drip, another that does espresso and people have their own instant. I had a colleague thrust money into my hand to repay for that weeks coffee. Came out the jar mate. He was a coffee snob who never drinks instant because he can tell.

I assume people who don’t like (decent) instant just make shit coffee.

ohprettybaby · 13/12/2019 19:14

I'd be grateful your coffee machine is broken. I
definitely prefer instant coffee. I go to Costa Coffee every weekend with others and the coffee is so strong it gives me a headache. I've had to start having their decaf - which is weaker than my instant stuff at home. I'm quite happy with my Kenco or Nescafe Gold Blend decaf.

hollieberrie · 13/12/2019 19:16

Total disaster.
Buy a cafetiere.

Lookingforpizza · 13/12/2019 19:16

My DP doesn't do instant but would have azera at a push. He's the only person I know who turns down instant coffee and is also the least snobby person I know. Conversely parents are huge snobs but my mum guzzles down Douwe Egberts like there's no tomorrow. I think your friend is being a bit rude tbh.

AnnaNimmity · 13/12/2019 19:17

I think coffee pods are horrible actually. I prefer a bean to cup machine...

or a cafetiere.

But no, in the general scheme of things it's not a disaster.

GlamGiraffe · 13/12/2019 19:19

I'm a coffee addict and dont drink tea. I can shamefully admit to consuming about 12 fresh coffes a day and whilst I really dislike instant coffee (azera is my most accepted), I wouldn't dream of either refusing it or being as blatantly rude as your "friend" in making such a snobbish comment. She can bring a take away for herself if she finds it so traumatic!
In reality making so many nespressos in a row means you are practically chained to the machine. On such an occasion, instant is perfectly acceptable. Your guests are there for the party, not because you are the local coffee shop.

RavenLG · 13/12/2019 19:19

I’m sorry but you can’t turn your nose up at instant coffee but think nespresso is ok
Grin

It wouldn’t even cross my mind to think instant coffee isn’t an acceptable offer to people I’m hosting in my own home. I’m so glad I don’t have total stuck up snobs for mates.

AldiBaldi555 · 13/12/2019 19:21

The issue here isn’t the coffee. The issue is your seriously rude “friend”.

In my house I do always warn people in advance that we only have instant coffee, so they can make an informed choice, but anyone as rude as your “friend” wouldn’t be invited back!

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 13/12/2019 19:21

For me it would depend on your instant coffee... azzera or L'or I'd happily accept classic Nescafé I'd refuse politely.

At home I have the purple L'or instant, Taylor's in the cafetière or a latte from the dolce gusto.

I never accept tea anywhere except my best friends house though as she buys Lady Grey just for me... I accept that I'd be a dick to expect others to do the same.

speakout · 13/12/2019 19:22

Such a first wold problem.

littleducks · 13/12/2019 19:22

I wouldnt drink instant, but would happily have tea or a cold drink.

Do say its instant when offering, nothing worse than being served instant coffee and trying to politely sip some so as not to seem ungrateful.

churchandstate · 13/12/2019 19:22

I like instant coffee.

Rafaroo · 13/12/2019 19:25

Ok, thanks everybody! Feeling a bit calmer now! I will just get a cafetiere and a good bag of roast and leave it at that. My friend is a bit of a status junkie to be fair so it is true her perspective is probably a bit warped. Hahaha I loved the point about one-upping by saying it's not environmentally responsible to use Nespresso machines! Which in fact it isnt and now I also feel guilty...gah! 😦

Anyway, I think I have thought of everything else for the party..gluten free..nut free...sugar free...sandwiches and crudite with hummus so not too much sugar.. any one else agree it is a total minefield organising this stuff these days?! Exhausted already! I am off to pour myself some cheap wine. Hahahaha!

Lweji · 13/12/2019 19:26

A disaster are all those plastic pods. An environmental disaster.Wink

StillWeRise · 13/12/2019 19:26

that happened to me in a cafe, I ordered coffee and git instant, I really couldn't finish it
