AIBU to be fuming that a 3 month old baby was left unattended in a room on his own sleeping in a car seat with no monitor? This baby was being babysat by his aunt

DeathStare · 30/11/2019 21:22

How long for? And how far away was the aunt - next room or several floors away?

Bourbonbiccy · 30/11/2019 21:22

How long were they left for and where did the Aunt go?

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2019 21:22

How long for?

Wildorchidz · 30/11/2019 21:22

How old is the aunt? Has she babysat before? Why was the baby in a car seat?
And yes I would be really unhappy about it.

Smarshian · 30/11/2019 21:22

What do you mean by unattended? Was the aunt in a different room?

wonderstuff · 30/11/2019 21:23

When you say alone, where was the aunt and for how long?

Jinglebells10 · 30/11/2019 21:23

Not clear how long for. Well the parents came through the front door as no one answered and they went through to find their son in the aunts bedroom unattended. The aunt didn't hear them come through the front door. I'm the other aunt not related to this aunt.

What difference would a baby monitor make? Assuming it was in the day.

Jinglebells10 · 30/11/2019 21:25

Yes baby was totally alone without a monitor. Aunt was in living room with her child who is of an independent age.

GaaaaarlicBread · 30/11/2019 21:25

Yeah that’s irresponsible

Wildorchidz · 30/11/2019 21:25

What difference would a baby monitor make?

If the baby cries the baby sitting aunt will hear?

1Morewineplease · 30/11/2019 21:25

Why was a three month old baby left alone ?
Why was aunt somewhere else ?
Why no monitor?
Why is baby left in a car seat?
Can you give more of a background?

Fizzypoo · 30/11/2019 21:26

Really? I would leave my dd in the dining room at my mums when visiting if she was asleep. I'd be in the living room and could hear if she woke up. Bit confused about this!

JKScot4 · 30/11/2019 21:26

How do you suggest people go to the loo or shower? Do you think a baby should never be unattended? I’ve 4 kids and never had a monitor.

DeathStare · 30/11/2019 21:26

I think this really does depend. I was the world's most over-protective parent and I certainly left my 3 month old unattended in the house asleep in the car seat from time to time.

If the baby had been left for hours, yes that would be unreasonable. If the aunt was so far away she couldn't possibly have heard baby cry (and had been gone that far for more than a few minutes) then yes that would be unreasonable.

20 minutes or half an hour when she's generally within earshot - nah not a big deal

Jinglebells10 · 30/11/2019 21:26

Although i'd still be annoyed at least you could hear the baby cry with a monitor. She didnt even hear his parents come through the front door so doubt she would of heard him cry

OP posts:
Wildorchidz · 30/11/2019 21:27

I’d hazard a guess that the babysitting aunt put the baby in the car seat and into a bedroom.
And the parents arrived home unexpectedly.

DeathStare · 30/11/2019 21:27

Aunt was in living room with her child who is of an independent age

But could she have heard the baby if baby had been crying?

Sparklingbrook · 30/11/2019 21:28

Presumably it was quieter in the other room for a sleeping baby, and the Aunt could be frequently checking in?
Baby monitors arent compulsory.

SymphonyofShadows · 30/11/2019 21:28

Mine used to fall asleep in his car seat so I’d bring him in and leave him in it until he woke I sometimes left the room for a pee etc. He’s 21 now and has no signs of trauma.

You don’t say how long he was left or what the aunt was doing. Impossible to say if you are BU.

DeathStare · 30/11/2019 21:30

She didnt even hear his parents come through the front door so doubt she would of heard him cry

So did the parents come in through the front door and go straight to her bedroom to find the baby rather than going into the living room where the aunt was? That would be a bizarre thing to do.

Jinglebells10 · 30/11/2019 21:30

Apparently baby was put in bedroom because the aunts daughter wouldnt leave him alone. Shes school age so not a baby. Not sure how long he was in there for but not just a quick few minutes as she said he was sleeping so put him in there.

Obviously you're going to leave your baby unattended for a few mins to go to the toilet/shower/ potter around. But this wasnt the case here.
