To not tip the takeaway delivery guy?

DH is out tonight, ordered myself a small pizza.

Came to 4.60, with delivery fee and 'card charge' the total was 8.50

Delivery driver dropped it off, but as I didn;t have any change I didn't tip. Felt bad about it, till I thought that if I tipped I would have paid more in 'charges' than my actual food.

AIBU?

Is that a thing? Ive never done it, the delivery drivers round my way turn and walk off pretty briskly, its made quite clear they don't expect tips

I never tip if I pay by card and usually the delivery drivers almost throw the food at you and are then on their way again anyway!

Oh just give a pound or two.

Well, I assume that the "delivery charge" goes to the delivery guy so YANBU.
I give a pound sometimes but if I don't have I'm not really bothered about it.

I dont understand why the need to tip? Surely getting paid a wage is good enough to say hey thanks what a good wor8. If its because they are given a low pay then shame on the employer but I'd say it's up to the employee to find a better job rather than rely on tips, I'm poor incase anyone thinks I'm really tight, so poor

That’s the beauty of Mumsnet, we can post on any topics, comment on any topic or ignore something that we find boring. What was the point if your comment? Did you need some sort of validation regarding your intellect?

I have considered ticking the tip button once or twice on uber eats before but that would mean tipping before the order arrives, which is fine if you get a good driver, but,

I'll never forget the driver who parked at the top of my drive, stationary, phoned me to tell me I needed to help him get the bags in as it was a big order (It was a perfectly normal order for a family of 5 that umpteen drivers have managed to deliver before...)
I stupidly went out expecting him to carry 1 or 2 bags and me to carry 1 or 2 bags, I assumed maybe he had a bad back or was old or something and was happy to help him, I got out and he was so rude, he just foisted all the bags on me, never said a fucking word, just watched me struggle to carry all these bags in down the driveway into my house then drove off!

I would have been beyond livid if HE had received a tip!

Rockingdahorse I’ve never heard of a card charge for a carry out, though I pay be debit card. Did you pay by credit card? I know some places here charge you if you spend under a fiver. If that’s the case, then it’s cheaper to bring the price of the carry out. You’re not unreasonable for not tipping, though I do tip if they’re quick and the box still feels warm. You are unreasonable for not ordering garlic bread.

You can tip after on Uber eats aswell (not that I ever tip)

Some miserable people on here. A pound would help the delivery guy/girl to be appreciated.

Tips are appreciated, particularly when you ask the delivery person to bring the huge (over £100) order into the house, downstairs and set it out on the patio... (yeah, they didn't)...

...or can you carry it into the kitchen because I've only got one hand and can't lift it.. said the old man in his giant boxers holding his shorts up in such a way as his penis was clearly visible through the cloth and his bum COMPLETELY on show when he turned around.. (he did tip)..

But no, tips for small orders aren't expected.

Not the delivery guy's fault though.

I usually tip food delivery people, as it's a bit of a shit job with unsociable hours, and minimum pay. And they are always friendly, and pleasant.

I always tip the takeaway delivery guy. It's a shit low income job. If you can afford it why wouldn't you.

I always tip. It is very low paid and they are lovely where I live.

DP is a takeaway delivery driver at the weekend. He’s on minimum wage for this and gets to keep any tips given which are always very helpful. The fees you pay don’t really go to the drivers directly.

I always tip When we order a takeaway.

I always tip, just a quid, but if I didn’t have a tip I wouldn’t order food.

It depends on where they are from, Independent vs pizza hut.

My DD is an instore and the drivers get paid more than them. They also get the food that is misordered.

In an independent place, especially if they are from outside the EU, they may not even get min wage.

For all those that tip, would you consider saving it up and asking for it to be distributed among all staff?

The drivers have an easier shift that the Instores.

If not, why not?

I always tip. If the delivery charge is £2 that's what the delivery driver is paid, they usually get some petrol money from the shop £10/15 which barely covers fuel costs some nights.

Yup, I always tip. They make far below minimum wage. Its shit that companies get away with that so, if I use them, I'm at least going to support the worker a bit too.

It suits some people and it's better than a lot of comparable low wage jobs. A lot of the chains pay a living wage. Some people, my DD included want those hours. She is looking for a Chef job, now she has qualified.
