To not tip the takeaway delivery guy?

Rockingdahorse · 30/11/2019 20:13

DH is out tonight, ordered myself a small pizza.

Came to 4.60, with delivery fee and 'card charge' the total was 8.50

Delivery driver dropped it off, but as I didn;t have any change I didn't tip. Felt bad about it, till I thought that if I tipped I would have paid more in 'charges' than my actual food.

AIBU?

Tipping the bin man is a new one to me. I can scarcely think of anyone less deserving of a tip than our local council employees. Being unhelpful and obstructive seems to be part of the job description. They repeatedly break the bins by throwing them around, then you have to pay £40 for a new one. They deliberately stop in the middle of the road instead of pulling in to the side, and if they can do it at 8.30 when people are rushing to work and school that causes them even greater satisfaction. And they're quite well paid anyway.

Isn't tipping the binmen where the term boxing day originated? Boxes of gifts were given or left out for them.

Admittedly most of today's binmen don't deserve tips for the reasons stated above, but the binmen we had when I was a kid were great. They didn't refuse to enter a garden or help elderly/disabled. They would also shockingly lift bins!

No

OlaEliza · 01/12/2019 11:06

Wikipedia says In Britain, it was a custom for tradesmen to collect "Christmas boxes" of money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year

OlaEliza · 01/12/2019 11:07

So that would be
Binmen
Postmen
Coalman
Etc

changeforprivacy · 01/12/2019 11:08

Yay to Wikipedia

Pipandmum · 01/12/2019 11:11

I tip. But then I wouldn't be ordering something less than £5 - can't even imagine what that would be! I'm generous as remember being on minimum wage and jobs paid under that on assumption you'll get tips. Plus I've never paid a delivery or service charge on a food order, just the menu price.

blackteasplease · 01/12/2019 11:13

Surely that’s what the delivery charge is for?

heartsonacake · 01/12/2019 11:15

YANBU. I don’t agree with tipping; it’s unnecessary and it makes no sense to tip some professions and not others.

Cab121009 · 01/12/2019 11:33

😂

KatherineJaneway · 01/12/2019 11:59

@heartsonacake

So you never eat at a restaurant where a service charge will be added to the bill?

heartsonacake · 01/12/2019 12:07

So you never eat at a restaurant where a service charge will be added to the bill?

KatherineJaneway The restaurants I tend to frequent don’t do this, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to deliberately avoid any that did. Doesn’t mean I agree with it.

SheChoseDown · 01/12/2019 12:44

If they aren't deserving of the tip I don't pay. I despise a tip being automatically added on. I ask them to remove it and I'll decide what I leave.
My in laws over tip. Even for shit service where iv had drinks spilled on me, food was cold, wrong food came out, no wine ever made it to the table after asking and asking .... All in one meal! They're bonkers but if I'm not paying its not my say.
Group meal i do think everyone should chip a couple of quid in. But not if its a shambles.

motherheroic · 01/12/2019 13:03

@blackteasplease No. The delivery charge isn't given to the delivery driver.

IdleBet · 01/12/2019 13:11

I always give the take away delivery driver a pound, I'd be too embarrassed to open the door if I had no change.

blackteasplease · 01/12/2019 16:46

Oh well that’s a surprise to me!

Havaina · 01/12/2019 18:47

I tipped the waitress at Bill's today. There was an optional service charge on the bill and I asked the waitress if tips go to waiting staff. She said no, so I saod I would give the tip to her as cash.

DH said that was bad because service chage is shared between everyone at the end of the day (kitchen staff included).

Is DH correct?

nearlynermal · 01/12/2019 18:53

I tip takeaway delivery riders a higher percentage than waiters, and more if it's raining or nasty out. We tip waiters, and they're just bringing the food across the room.

Owlypants · 01/12/2019 20:18

I work at the counter in a takeaway shop, my brother is one of the delivery drivers. The delivery charges are £1.20 for local and £2 for further, he gets the delivery charge and at the end of the night he gets £12 to cover fuel no matter how many miles he's done. All the drivers are self employed as couriers and must have insurance. At least 2 of the drivers in my work also deliver for yodel which I'm told is also shit pay

Jinxed2 · 01/12/2019 20:22

I never tip.

OctoberLovers · 01/12/2019 20:48

We normally tip afew pound

The Tesco delivery person always gets a fiver....

The only other people that get a tip, is at Christmas... The postman, The Cleaner, The window Cleaner, Etc....
But thats pretty normal

OctoberLovers · 01/12/2019 20:48

Postman and window cleaner can £20 at Christmas

OctoberLovers · 01/12/2019 20:50

Service charge does not go to the staff

Delivery charges, do not go to the drivers

poorstudent1010 · 01/12/2019 20:53

I tip in restaurants or for other services, but I never tip food delivery drivers for various reasons:

  • I order food in 1-2 times a week, rather than a rare one off, so I’d end up paying a significant amount in tips
  • I live in London, so not a difficult house to reach. In fact my orders are typically late as they carry multiple orders at once to deliver nearby
  • I never have cash, I am a card user

Also most delivery drivers offer very basic customer service or are simply rude. Why is that worthy of a tip? With Uber eats, recently drivers just park somewhere on my road and text “I’m here” and expect me to cone to them, rather than actually delivering to my door as they are supposed to - fuck are they getting a tip!

Owlypants · 01/12/2019 20:54

@octoberLovers it depends on the shop. Some places the delivery charge is the drivers wage, it's mainly smaller shops that operate this way as bigger chains offer an hourly wage

1300cakes · 01/12/2019 21:03

Ever since I started paying for delivery by card (about 10 years ago) I haven't tipped and haven't considered doing so. For a start 95% of the time I would have no cash on me to give.
