To not tip the takeaway delivery guy?

Rockingdahorse · 30/11/2019 20:13

DH is out tonight, ordered myself a small pizza.

Came to 4.60, with delivery fee and 'card charge' the total was 8.50

Delivery driver dropped it off, but as I didn;t have any change I didn't tip. Felt bad about it, till I thought that if I tipped I would have paid more in 'charges' than my actual food.

AIBU?

@Cab121009 So you know how shit being a waitress is and was happy to snatch tips from people when you were one. Now suddenly you hate tipping? Funny.

@sam221 so yes my bin mans gets a tip(by virtue of a Christmas/Easter card with cash inside"

I put my wheelie bin out the night before it is due to go, the bin man takes it during the following morning. The wheelie bin scoops it up, and the bin men do not get out of the truck. I may or may not be home.

Genuine question here: how do you give a card to your bin man? Do you lurk by the front door, card clutched in your hand, and sprint out when you see them approaching? Do you give a card/tip to the man who collect the recycling and the green waste as well? Or do you attach it to the bin itself, as I know my mum did when bins were manually collected. or send it care of the council Chambers?

squeekums · 01/12/2019 05:19

I dont tip, we order online and dont have cash lying around
I dont think i ever tip. I mean there are many low paid workers, do you tip them all? Why only in hospitality are tips a thing

Poursomesugaronme88 · 01/12/2019 05:27

I never tip. They get paid a wage. I don't get paid a tip in my low wage job.

Sorry, I am not a parent or a mom. For some reason, this question showed up in my Google feed and I felt that i needed to reply as I feel deeply about this being an Ubereats driver previously, so created an account just for this.

I had worked for Ubereats while studying in university as an international student in Australia. Firstly, to answer your question, only those delivery people who are new at this job expect tips. Nobody else really does, because for every hundred deliveries that we do, we get tips for about 2 of them. So you shouldn't feel bad at all if you do not wish to tip, as tips only come as a delightful surprise, not something that is expected.

The main reason I am writing here is to tell the people who do tip that what they are doing is much more than the few dollars of tip. Now I generally do not complain about little things but Ubereats was a whole another world altogether! Not only are we paid poorly for a lot of hard work (bicycle in the slopey Sydney roads are tough and my bums used to pain like anything due to long hours to make money), but it is so common to be treated with disrespect by the restaurant (who don't like us because Uber the company takes unfair cuts from their earnings, the customer (who is hungry and easily angered by delays that are mostly out of our control), as well as some people on the streets (who think every delivery person is some non-english speaking driver on a working holiday visa who doesn't understand road rules and poses a risk to everyone walking on the footpath). Trust me, when you're constantly looked upon with disrespect in your surroundings, when customers pay a tip or even smile and say a few words, say things like stay warm or ride safe, it feels so light and good that at least this person has no ill feelings towards me. Generally when someone shouted at me, that would be my last delivery for the day and I would just go home and sleep. But on one such occassion, I was too far away from home so decided to do one more delivery on the way home, and this customer turned out to be an elderly lady who was so warm in her behaviour, that her small gesture turned the whole day around for me. In my experience, one kind gesture was powerful enough to give me strength to absorb multiple instances of unreasonable behaviour. So while it is not possible to stop others from being unreasonable, you should remember that your goodness has more power than their coldness, and hence i request you to exercise this power whenever it is feasible from you.

Thank you!

sam221 · 01/12/2019 05:42

@SummerPlace I kinda hover by my door, they basically come at the same time each week-so makes it slightly easier. I also try to give near the beginning of December, so that they are able to spend it accordingly.

BadLad · 01/12/2019 06:05

I round it up to the next pound and add two more,. So a £12.70 meal would get a £2.30 tip, for example.

Lauren83 · 01/12/2019 06:35

I always give £1 or £2 to mine

Intotheseayouandme · 01/12/2019 06:40

I think posters are missing the point that delivery drivers are one of the jobs where people are paid below minimum wage - and often well below.

What other jobs are paid below minimum wage? Genuinely interested, has picked my conscience.

Intotheseayouandme · 01/12/2019 06:41

"has pricked my conscience"

Mabbers · 01/12/2019 08:05

Jesus outsomnia, if you're as repetitive in real life as you are on this thread they'd probably forgo the tip just to get away quicker.

isabellerossignol · 01/12/2019 08:16

Tipping the bin man is a new one to me. I can scarcely think of anyone less deserving of a tip than our local council employees. Being unhelpful and obstructive seems to be part of the job description. They repeatedly break the bins by throwing them around, then you have to pay £40 for a new one. They deliberately stop in the middle of the road instead of pulling in to the side, and if they can do it at 8.30 when people are rushing to work and school that causes them even greater satisfaction. And they're quite well paid anyway.

isabellerossignol · 01/12/2019 08:18

I have given my postman money at Christmas though, because he's really nice and really helpful. So I'm not a monster.

KatherineJaneway · 01/12/2019 08:35

I tip, it's a crappy job and I know from my experience in low paid jobs (before nmw), tips are gratefully received. I order through apps so add the tip on that way as, like pp, rarely use cash anymore.

Of course YANBU! They’re being paid NMW anyway.

As you can see, many are not and even if they are, they're hardly going to live the life of riley on nmw.

Havaina · 01/12/2019 08:47

Many drivers are not paid minimum wage.

stickerqueen · 01/12/2019 08:59

I don't know of our local pizza hut has told their drivers not to takes tips but none of the drivers will take one. It's a shame really

SheChoseDown · 01/12/2019 09:15

I go above beyond daily in my job. No tips. I don't expect them. And I don't tip others.
I used to. My boyfriend still does.
I fucking hate tipping shit, rude, smelly waiters. Do your fucking job, at a minimum level before I even consider tipping. You can't be arsed to wash/smile/be remotely polite? Then I can't be arsed tipping you

KatherineJaneway · 01/12/2019 09:19

@SheChoseDown

So what happens when you go to a restaurant and they automatically add the tip to the bill? Or you are out with friends/ family and they all tip, do you refuse?

isabellerossignol · 01/12/2019 09:25

I have been in a group before where we disputed a service charge on the bill due to the appalling service. They tried to argue it was compulsory but three of the group were management in the hospitality industry and another was a college lecturer in the field, so they had to admit in the end that they were not within their rights to demand a tip.

Obviously if they had provided anything approaching decent service the tip would not have been disputed.

Waytooearly · 01/12/2019 09:49

Wow.

I go above and beyond in my job and I don't get tips. That's because it's a rewarding and well-paid job.

Everyone knows that food delivery drivers don't make minimum wage and that they work in dangerous conditions. My friend's little brother has faced racial harassment and threats delivering food.

We he said that some people didn't even tip I was astounded. You have money for a takeaway you have money for a tip. Unbelievable selfishness.

QuizzlyBear · 01/12/2019 09:56

Never tipped a delivery driver in my life! Are you American?

changeforprivacy · 01/12/2019 09:58

Everyone knows that food delivery drivers don't make minimum wage and that they work in dangerous conditions.

Ours are paid really well, as per my previous post. No dangerous conditions here.

oohnicevase · 01/12/2019 10:02

I hate tipping , I never tip anyone other than in a restaurant and then I find it unnecessary . I would never tip a delivery driver because I pay on a card and they bring the food . It's their job isn't it 🤷‍♀️
