To not tip the takeaway delivery guy?

Rockingdahorse · 30/11/2019 20:13

DH is out tonight, ordered myself a small pizza.

Came to 4.60, with delivery fee and 'card charge' the total was 8.50

Delivery driver dropped it off, but as I didn;t have any change I didn't tip. Felt bad about it, till I thought that if I tipped I would have paid more in 'charges' than my actual food.

AIBU?

Octoberloves that simply isn't true

Some times delivery charges do go to drives instead of a wage

I was a delivery driver for many years, Indians , Chinese etc I would keep £1 per drop

Pizza Hut - they paid minimum wage

Just depends on the place.

I totally relied on tips though , as if I got none I could come away and not break even some nights

GenevieveB · 01/12/2019 21:30

I might round it up to the nearest £ but not always, and not if I’ve paid a delivery charge, sometimes it’s worth ordering extra to qualify for free delivery it can work out cheaper, bottled drinks etc can be saved so as not to be wasting food. The drivers just drop it off and go, I don’t tip postman when s/he delivers but maybe give something around Christmas as a thank you. I don’t think there is a right or wrong here just preference

Onesnowballshort · 01/12/2019 21:35

I am amazed at poster saying she gives the Tesco guy a fiver! Delivery isn't that cheap and I couldn't justify doing it with another fiver on top. If it was Christmas maybe.
I didn't think they would be allowed to accept it, to be honest.

Spamantha · 01/12/2019 21:37

I wouldn't tip the Tesco guy as they're on an hourly wage and will be making at least the minimum wage.

Food delivery drivers often don't make minimum wage. I wouldn't order for takeaway to be delivered if I didn't have money to tip with.

tararabumdeay · 01/12/2019 21:53

I always give a couple of quid cash and would not order if I didn't have it.
I don't expect servants to bring me food to the door. It's a very occasional treat.

SheChoseDown · 01/12/2019 22:31

I tip my child minder. Now there's a service worthy of tipping.
Occasional bottle of wine usually.
Also something bigger at Christmas

SpoonBlender · 01/12/2019 22:42

I always tip. Being a delivery person is fucking awful, I've done it.

KatherineJaneway · 02/12/2019 07:01

With Uber eats, recently drivers just park somewhere on my road and text “I’m here” and expect me to cone to them, rather than actually delivering to my door as they are supposed to - fuck are they getting a tip!

Probably because they know you don't tip.

OlaEliza · 02/12/2019 09:18

^ Exactly what I was going to say.

DarlingNikita · 02/12/2019 17:26

Not the point, but FUCK, that's a lot of charges Confused
I'd order from elsewhere in future.

On tipping: if I pay online I tend to add 10–15% tip; it's easy and less embarrassing than handing the delivery person cash (don't judge me, I'm British). Having said that, I recently forgot to add a tip online so tipped cash, willingly, as a) I don't order online often so it's not a huge expense, b) it was a Saturday night, a shit time to have to work and c) it was rainy and freezing. I figured the guy deserved it.

Attitude84 · 02/12/2019 17:43

I know a few people who are delivery drivers. Their hourly rate is poor. They spend the whole night driving. They pay for their own petrol too. They also get all the flack for when their food is late or parts missing. Even a small tip is appreciated.

DarlingNikita · 02/12/2019 17:55

They pay for their own petrol too.

That's shocking. I'm glad I tip now.

ToftyAC · 02/12/2019 17:56

I don’t tip as I’ve paid for delivery and card charge, unless it’s a takeaway that’s cash on delivery & it’s free delivery.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 02/12/2019 18:02

I didn’t actually realise that so few people tip. I’m quite shocked as I thought it was normal to tip. I usually give £2 plus let them keep the lose change. If it’s a really bad night I give another pound or two extra, because the poor sods are usually dripping with water. I don’t tip if the food is really late and the container feels cold, though I find that rarely happens now, since I tip regularly. 😁 Though I do completely understand if people want a treat but don’t have the finances to tip.

Frazzledstar1 · 02/12/2019 18:04

If I pay cash I sometimes tip by way of rounding up. If I pay by card I rarely tip as I never usually have cash on me.

LisaD76 · 02/12/2019 18:05

I do find it funny though that people go on about them being minimum wage..... so is pretty much every staff member in every store you shop in .... but they don’t get tipped they get people harassing them and threatening them and people letting their kids throw food and drinks on the floor or flying around on healys and scooters but they don’t get tipped .... can barely get a please or thank you from shoppers nowadays

Ated · 02/12/2019 18:30

Why should you have to tip anybody? Do you tip the people in shops, at the till, when you buy sweets or other similar things, no, of course, you don't so why do it? If your job doesn't pay enough to get another one, do some train g to improve your skills and move on. I worked for myself for ages and if I didn't like the rate per hour or day I went somewhere else. There are plenty of good jobs out there if you have some skills which anyone can get. I get to travel, work long hours, see the world, live in top hotels and frequently have to turn jobs down as they don't pay enough. Anyone can do it if they want to and you shouldn't rely on tips for your wages.

threatmatrix · 02/12/2019 18:35

I do deliveries for my restaurant if it gets very busy, although I don’t expect at tip it’s lovely to get a pound, also I wouldn’t accept a delivery order for under £15 as it’s just not worth it business wise. The drivers do not get the tips that you pay upfront. If I have three deliveries to the same area I will drop to the one that tips first but I think that’s just human nature. Always give better service to known tippers.

threatmatrix · 02/12/2019 18:38

If everyone got a “better” job as you called it who would serve you when you go out? Waiting on tables, listening to people’s moaning and groaning, changing the menu just to suit them, cleaning up their kids shit, smiling at there stupid comments and demands. That’s why you tip your waiter. I always tip which means I always get the best table and service. The people that are known not to tip get the basic service and tables.

vincettenoir · 02/12/2019 18:45

I usually tip but every now and then I realise I don’t have any change, like you on this occasion. I do feel bad but I don’t dwell on it.

MadameButterface · 02/12/2019 19:04

I always always always tip service people

Unlike shop workers for eg they can’t take scheduled breaks (i am a hairdresser and i rarely get to sit down so often miss breaks, as i am technically self employed like the delivery drivers there’s no one i can complain to to enforce this, besides i can’t leave a client with their hair half cut or half dried, so i miss my break; I’ve had aura migraines at work from being dehydrated many times)

If you can afford a luxury like a taxi or a meal out or a takeaway or a six hour hair appointment then you can afford a tip. I am on means tested in-work benefits and i always tip, if I don’t have the tip then i go without the thing. Of course if it’s absolute shit service then I won’t but that is rare.

I have noticed a big divide among tippers and nontippers, along north/south working/middle class lines. The less people have the more generous they tend to be. Sorry but there it is.

MrsBadcrumble123 · 02/12/2019 19:14

@Outsomniawow you’re a bundle of joy!! Confused

Ated · 02/12/2019 19:19

@threatmatrix I don't care if you don't like listening to moaning diners, changing menus, smiling at stupid comments or cleaning up their kid's mess. If the staff don't like it then either leave or put up with it. I've been fortunate enough to stay in many fine hotels and eat at their restaurants and invariably I dine with the Chef and his staff, eating what we want after the diners have left. If there are no staff then firms will have to pay more but don't stay and whinge, get out and improve yourself or accept it, it isn't my concern if you don't get enough tips or need them to survive.

di2004 · 02/12/2019 19:21

I always tip but we live semi rural and it’s a bit of a pain getting to ours! I would just give him a £1 next time xx

FloraGreysteel · 02/12/2019 19:24

I always tip. I live in central London, for context.
